The rainbow scrap challenge colour for August is orange so I pulled out my bin of orange selvages this week and made my selvage blocks. Each selvage strip is top stitched very close to the edge and the are foundation pieced to a square of very light weight non woven interfacing. Orange is one of my favourite colours.
Our daughter is in her friend's wedding party this fall. I decided to make the bride some hot pads as a wedding shower gift. These are the colours ... read more
Most of my sewing this past week was by hand. I finished quilting the Quilt for a Survivor of a Residential School on Monday and added the binding by machine on Tuesday, leaving the hand sewing of the binding for several car trips we made on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. It's been hot here so having a quilt on my lap was a bit warm but I directed the A/C vents towards me and managed to finish the hand sewing without melting! First, a few close ups of the quilting. I used navy thread top and bottom and ...
read moreI started the week off with all of my batik fabrics on the floor outside my sewing room, sifting though the pile to find the right fabrics to include in the pieced backing for my Quilt for a Survivor of a Residential School. I also had 4 6 1/2 inch blocks leftover from the workshop on Traditional Variations which also made it onto the back. I used up several larger chunks of fabric, inserting bits and pieces as necessary to make it the size I needed. Here is the backing on my design wall, ready for pin basting and ...
read moreI made some rug hooking progress on my class project. The sheep is now done, including the tail and the legs. The wool strips are not trimmed yet so the wonkiness in the legs and tail is due to that. Next, I will work on the flowers. Then, there will be lots of sky and grass to fill in.
This past week flew by but I did manage to find a bit of time to spend in my sewing room. I made two sets of selvage blocks for the rainbow scrap challenge this month --navy and bright blue. It's so much easier to make these blocks now that my selvages are all sorted by colour.
We got home Saturday night at 1am from a 6 day trip to Illinois and Indiana. It was our first time crossing the border to the US since before the pandemic. My quilting friend, Christine, and her husband came with us. The original inspiration for the trip was an advertisement I saw online for a display of Ken Burns' antique quilts at the Peoria Riverfront Museum in Illinois...I told my husband that it would be interesting to see this exhibit and the vacation grew out of this small seed that I planted! We spent a few hours at the ...
read moreI tackled a UFO this week--they will not get done unless I work on them! I participated in a round robin with some members of the Toronto Modern Guild last summer and made a wall hanging out of my centre block with a spool border made by Terri. The other borders/blocks will be used in future projects. I found some appropriate backing fabric and pieced some batting scraps before pin basting and quilting it with my walking foot. My slow stitching project this week was sewing the binding down. It is the same fabric as the background gray around ...

This was not a very productive week in my sewing room. I managed to hand appliqué a few more doors and windows on a couple of houses on my Coming Home quilt, but that's about it.
There may have been some bribing involved in the taking of this next photo---Finn is showing you have have two more houses to do on this row. The dark blue house will have a yellow door and windows. The magenta house just needs the windows sewn down. This will be my project for slow Sunday stitching tomorrow. I will link up with Kathy ...
read moreI finished hand stitching the binding on my checkerboard quilt earlier in the week and then today, my quilt holder did his part for the photoshoot. It was windy outside today, so we picked a sheltered spot on the back patio. Finn watched from the back door--he really wanted to come out to participate in the photo shoot! This quilt was started last year as part of Debbie Brown's Colour Block Challenge on Facebook--I had a lot of black and white scraps to use up and made 25 sixteen patches for this quilt. Yes--I still have more black and ...
read moreI have been working on several slow Sunday stitching projects this week. I added more windows and doors to the houses in the Coming Home quilt...I still have a few more to stitch down and one complete "street" to cut out and sew. Some of my houses have extra "personality" with slightly slanted doors and windows...
I put the pompom on my new hat earlier today so it is all ready to wear. There are still a few days here and there when I will need a hat for my morning walk. The pattern picture showed the hat with ...
read moreMy friend Christine and I attended the Spring Crafter's Retreat at Camp Kintail this past weekend. Since last week was extremely busy, I did not have anything to blog about before I left on Friday, but now, I have lots to share! We drove through some snow squalls on the way to the camp on Friday but the roads were fine. We managed to get some walking in while we were there, in between meals and sewing. I always get lots done at a retreat--no meals to prepare, no dishes to do...just sew, sew and sew!

I made a few more batik blocks this week for my Quilt for a Residential School Survivor. I only have two more blocks to make. I am contemplating ideas... Finn likes to "help" while I am sewing, or should I say, trying to sew...
Finn is here! Our daughter is quite busy at work for the next few weeks so we have Finn here to keep us company. He loves to sit on the back of the couch and keep an eye on the comings and goings outside, as well as watch my husband and I. Finn likes to keep track of his people. He's staring at me as I type this blogpost on the computer...obviously, I need supervision!
Finn is not allowed in my sewing room so I have a baby gate up at the doorway so he can still see ...
