Starting a New Quilt (or two!) from The Cozy Quilter

The rainbow scrap challenge colour for August is orange so I pulled out my bin of orange selvages this week and made my selvage blocks.  Each selvage strip is top stitched very close to the edge and the are foundation pieced to a square of very light weight non woven interfacing.  Orange is one of my favourite colours.

I will get my orange scrap bin out soon to work on my drunkard's path blocks.

In the meantime, I have started a new quilt--this one is a wedding gift.  The wedding was in June, after a two year delay due ...

Wedding Shower Gift and RSC purple Drunkard's path blocks from The Cozy Quilter

We were away visiting our daughter last weekend and did not get home until Wednesday night which meant that there was not a lot of sewing time this week. Since the end of July is quickly approaching, I needed to get my purple Rainbow Scrap Challenge blocks finished up.  The colour for August is orange so I will dig out my orange scrap bin and my orange selvages this coming week.

Our daughter is in her friend's wedding party this fall. I decided to make the bride some hot pads as a wedding shower gift.  These are the colours ...

A Finished Quilt from The Cozy Quilter

Most of my sewing this past week was by hand.  I finished quilting the Quilt for a Survivor of a Residential School on Monday and added the binding by machine on Tuesday, leaving the hand sewing of the binding for several car trips we made on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.  It's been hot here so having a quilt on my lap was a bit warm but I directed the A/C vents towards me and managed to finish the hand sewing without melting!  First, a few close ups of the quilting.  I used navy thread top and bottom and ...

Purple Scraps and Quilting is Underway. from The Cozy Quilter

I sewed with a friend earlier this week and pulled out my purple scraps for my Drunkard's path blocks for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge.  The white background pieces are cut out and ready to sew to the pieced sections this coming week. It's always interesting to see what lurks in the bottom of the scrap bins!

I have several (too many) quilt tops waiting to be quilted so the push is on to get some of them done.  I took three tops and backings to our church this week where I could lay them out on two tables ...

Two Pieced Quilt Backs and a Finished Quilt from The Cozy Quilter

I started the week off with all of my batik fabrics on the floor outside my sewing room, sifting though the pile to find the right fabrics to include in the pieced backing for my Quilt for a Survivor of a Residential School.  I also had 4 6 1/2 inch blocks leftover from the workshop on Traditional Variations which also made it onto the back.  I used up several larger chunks of fabric, inserting bits and pieces as necessary to make it the size I needed.  Here is the backing on my design wall, ready for pin basting and ...

I Need to Do Some Quilting... from The Cozy Quilter

Back in February, I took a Zoom class with Cheryl Arkison called Traditional Variations.  The idea was to take a traditional block and change it up in some way.  I made blocks based on four traditional blocks:  churn dash, pinwheel, log cabin and sawtooth star.  This week, I finished my last three blocks and put the top together, except for the final border which is cut but not sewn on yet.  This quilt will be donated to the Toronto Modern Quilt Guild outreach project--Quilts for Survivors of Residential Schools. My husband and I participated in a Healing Walk this morning ...

Alpacas! (sewing and knitting too) from The Cozy Quilter

I finished knitting the whale baby facecloth this week and wrapped it up with these other two cloths I made earlier to give to a friend's new grandson. I'm pleased the pictures show up well on each cloth.  I must be getting better at making these as there was only the odd stitch to unknit...not whole rows like I used to have to do.

I finished making the rest of the heart blocks and added sashing to the blocks to make the hearts float.  I am not adding an outside border as it is the perfect size ...

Hooking, Knitting, and I started something new... from The Cozy Quilter

I made some rug hooking progress on my class project. The sheep is now done, including the tail and the legs.  The wool strips are not trimmed yet so the wonkiness in the legs and tail is due to that.  Next, I will work on the flowers.  Then, there will be lots of sky and grass to fill in.

I just have the last border to do on the whale baby facecloth--I had hoped to finish it today but we got busy with gardening and then doing other jobs inside so I did not sit down to knit. I should ...

Blue Scraps, a Baby Quilt and Rughooking from The Cozy Quilter

This past week flew by but I did manage to find a bit of time to spend in my sewing room.  I made two sets of selvage blocks for the rainbow scrap challenge this month --navy and bright blue. It's so much easier to make these blocks now that my selvages are all sorted by colour.

I quilted this baby quilt for our church Christmas bazaar--the fabrics were all donated to the sewing group--I added the blue fabric squares from my stash as well as the light blue and white striped binding. The sailor fabric has a piece of ...

Home from Our Getaway! from The Cozy Quilter

We got home Saturday night at 1am from a 6 day trip to Illinois and Indiana.  It was our first time crossing the border to the US since before the pandemic.  My quilting friend, Christine, and her husband came with us. The original inspiration for the trip was an advertisement I saw online for a display of Ken Burns' antique quilts at the Peoria Riverfront Museum in Illinois...I told my husband that it would be interesting to see this exhibit and the vacation grew out of this small seed that I planted! We spent a few hours at the ...

Sewing Machine UFO and a Baby Quilt Top from The Cozy Quilter

I tackled a UFO this week--they will not get done unless I work on them!  I participated in a round robin with some members of the Toronto Modern Guild last summer and made a wall hanging out of my centre block with a spool border made by Terri. The other borders/blocks will be used in future projects. I found some appropriate backing fabric and pieced some batting scraps before pin basting and quilting it with my walking foot. My slow stitching project this week was sewing the binding down. It is the same fabric as the background gray around ...

Baby Quilt Done and Dark Green Scraps from The Cozy Quilter

I had a busy week in the sewing department this week.  I quilted and bound this flannel baby quilt for our church Christmas Bazaar.  The flannel wedges were cut from donated material and the back is a light blue minke, making this quilt very soft and cuddly. I quilted it with straight lines using my walking foot.  I was worried that the minke might stretch and pucker a bit but it looks great--no puckers and nice and flat. I hand stitched the binding this week in the gazebo--my favourite place for hand stitching!

I played with my dark green scraps ...

Knitting a Baby Washcloth and Green RSC from The Cozy Quilter

I just found out that someone I know just became a grandmother for the first time... how exciting!  I decided to make some baby washcloths for the new baby.  This one is about 1/3 done and will have a bird on it.  I have a starfish cloth that I made quite a while ago and I will also make a cloth with a whale on it. These do not take too long to make.

The Rainbow Scrap Challenge colour this month is green, specifically, forest green and sage green.  I have enough forest green scraps to make my three ...

Slow Appliqué and a Quick Baby Quilt Top from The Cozy Quilter

I managed to get one more house completed on my Coming Home quilt this week...this is very slow progress indeed.  I guess that's why they call it slow stitching!  I hope to get the last house on this street outfitted with a door and windows by this time next week.

I showed these tiny HST's a few weeks ago and this week, finally laid then out on the design wall.  They will be 1" when sewn into the block.  I am not sure what to do in the middle yet.  I'm not in love with the ...

How I Store My Scraps from The Cozy Quilter

This was not a very productive week in my sewing room.  I managed to hand appliqué a few more doors and windows on a couple of houses on my Coming Home quilt, but that's about it.

There may have been some bribing involved in the taking of this next photo---Finn is showing you have have two more houses to do on this row.  The dark blue house will have a yellow door and windows.  The magenta house just needs the windows sewn down. This will be my project for slow Sunday stitching tomorrow. I will link up with Kathy ...

Checkerboard Quilt Done! from The Cozy Quilter

I finished hand stitching the binding on my checkerboard quilt earlier in the week and then today, my quilt holder did his part for the photoshoot.  It was windy outside today, so we picked a sheltered spot on the back patio.  Finn watched from the back door--he really wanted to come out to participate in the photo shoot!  This quilt was started last year as part of Debbie Brown's Colour Block Challenge on Facebook--I had a lot of black and white scraps to use up and made 25 sixteen patches for this quilt.  Yes--I still have more black and ...

Lots of Slow Stitching Projects Underway! from The Cozy Quilter

I have been working on several slow Sunday stitching projects this week.  I added more windows and doors to the houses in the Coming Home quilt...I still have a few more to stitch down and one complete "street" to cut out and sew.  Some of my houses have extra "personality" with slightly slanted doors and windows...

I put the pompom on my new hat earlier today so it is all ready to wear.  There are still a few days here and there when I will need a hat for my morning walk.  The pattern picture showed the hat with ...

Camp Kintail Crafter's Retreat Report from The Cozy Quilter

My friend Christine and I attended the Spring Crafter's Retreat at Camp Kintail this past weekend.  Since last week was extremely busy, I did not have anything to blog about before I left on Friday, but now, I have lots to share! We drove through some snow squalls on the way to the camp on Friday but the roads were fine.  We managed to get some walking in while we were there, in between meals and sewing.  I always get lots done at a retreat--no meals to prepare, no dishes to do...just sew, sew and sew!

 I started ...

My Helper from The Cozy Quilter

I made a few more batik blocks this week for my Quilt for a Residential School Survivor.  I only have two more blocks to make.  I am contemplating ideas...  Finn likes to "help" while I am sewing, or should I say, trying to sew...

I am going to make 12 blocks for this quilt--3 of each type.  Here are my three log cabin variation blocks.  I made the bottom one today and the one on the right with the green border earlier in the week.

I added the orange churn dash block to the collection today.  I just have one ...

We Have a Visitor! from The Cozy Quilter

Finn is here!  Our daughter is quite busy at work for the next few weeks so we have Finn here to keep us company.  He loves to sit on the back of the couch and keep an eye on the comings and goings outside, as well as watch my husband and I.  Finn likes to keep track of his people.  He's staring at me as I type this blogpost on the computer...obviously, I need supervision!

Finn is not allowed in my sewing room so I have a baby gate up at the doorway so he can still see ...
