Christmas bed runner welcomes overnight guests from Carried Away Quilting

My Christmas bed runner is finished! I did a “decorating test-run” to see how it will look in our guest room with a few other holiday items, and I think the end result is warm and inviting. Now I’m torn, though. Do I put the Christmas décor away until after Thanksgiving, or leave it out and watch my husband shake his head and roll his eyes?

As I mentioned in my post a few weeks ago, a bed runner is a great solution if you don’t have time to make a full quilt, but you want to dress ...

Christmas bed runner with Star Crossed Pines from Carried Away Quilting

Just the other day I was walking by our guest room and thought, “I wish I had a Christmas quilt to lay across the foot of the guest bed this winter.” You may be surprised to hear that I don’t have enough Christmas quilts for every bed and sofa in the house, but I don’t! Since Christmas is less than two months away (eeek!), I decided to make a bed runner instead. Here’s my first block.

Do you recognize the block? It’s from my Star Crossed Pines quilt pattern!  Doesn’t it have a cozy, homespun ...

Autumn decorating with my Fall Flight quilt from Carried Away Quilting

Hello quilting friends! Fall has officially arrived in Minnesota. Not only has the calendar turned over to September, but we are already experiencing much cooler weather. That was my signal to start a bit of autumn decorating, which I wanted to share with you.

Last year when we moved into this home, I hung my Pumpkin Sky wall hanging in our dining room, and I really loved that look.  But this year I wanted to feature my new autumn quilt, Fall Flight. I decided to hang it over the antique door that leads into the room, and then decorate the ...

Postage Stamp Star block with Fat Quarter Shop from Carried Away Quilting

A few weeks ago, the creative folks at the Fat Quarter shop asked if I’d like to sew a project for their Classic & Vintage series, where they take a traditional block (like those found in old catalogs and vintage quilts) and give it a fresh spin in a new pattern. Well, of course I said yes and signed up to make their Postage Stamp Star block!

The block finishes at 18” square, which is a great size for a table topper or wall hanging. The piecing is simple and straightforward. I was able to sew, quilt and bind my ...

Fat Quarter Flourish autumn bundles from Carried Away Quilting

Hello quilting friends! After I posted about my autumn quilt ideas earlier this week, I got to thinking that I would love to see my Fat Quarter Flourish pattern sewn up in fall fabrics. So, I mocked up some options using green, orange and black prints from Fig Tree’s Farmhouse II collection.

The great thing about my Fat Quarter Flourish pattern is that it only requires five fat quarters to make the top. And you can easily switch up the fabric placement depending upon what looks best to your creative eye!

Here is the fat quarter bundle I created ...

New pattern: Fall Flight from Carried Away Quilting

Autumn is my favorite season. Like many of you, I cherish signs of fall:  the spectacle of leaves turning vibrant shades of red, gold and orange; the glimpse of a harvest moon hanging low in the sky; the sight and sound of geese migrating south; and, of course, fields of pumpkin patches and roadside pumpkin stands. In Minnesota, we savor every last bit of autumn in preparation for the long winter that follows.

Every year as summer draws to a close, I feel a thrill when I pull out my autumn quilts for display and snuggling. Today I’m excited ...

A scrappy quilt featuring low volume fabrics from Carried Away Quilting

Hello quilting friends! I’m popping in today to show you a recent finish, my Happy Trails quilt featuring some favorite low volume prints from Fig Tree & Company. Happy Trails is just one of six fabulous patterns available in the Scrappy Project Planner by Lori Holt.

There are several reasons this quilt is special to me:

First, I took my time with it. Too often, quilt making becomes a rush due to deadlines. But this quilt evolved slowly.  I ordered the Scrappy Project Planner from My Timeless Day back in November of 2017. I took my time learning what the ...

Flower Tile: a charm pack quilt for spring from Carried Away Quilting

February may be winding down, but winter is not. Today we’re in a blizzard warning and the week ahead will bring more snow and cold temps. Once again, I looked to my quilts to bring a vision of spring to the inside of my home since mother nature is not cooperating.  Yesterday I graced our table with my Flower Tile quilt, and it cheered me right up!

Flower Tile is a charm pack quilt that finishes at 44 1/2" square. My sample features the Strawberry Fields Revisited collection by Fig Tree & Company, but I think this pattern would ...

A Tumbler quilt for my sewing room from Carried Away Quilting

A few weeks ago I told you about a new project I was starting, a Tumbler quilt. I’m pleased to share the final result with you, a sweet little quilt for my sewing room. She’s a super cute complement to the Lone Star quilt I shared with you last spring.

While the Lone Star quilt hangs above my cutting table (a DIY project made by my husband and me), the new Tumbler quilt is displayed in an opposite corner of the room where I can see her from my sewing machine. I’ve used an old yard stick ...

Decorating for the holidays, quietly from Carried Away Quilting

I’ve been feeling quiet inside as we move into the holiday season. Not sad or depressed. On the contrary, I feel quite thankful and happy. But I also feel a sense of quiet. Maybe this is my mind’s way of fighting off the constant barrage of noise . . . from the television, the radio, the computer and the phone. So much information. So much news. So much to do. So much to make!

I’ve talked to other quilters who, like me, feel that being a quilter today is a bit like being a squirrel. We are constantly zipping about ...

Winter Flurries: a finished quilt top from Carried Away Quilting

Here in the United States, the Thanksgiving holiday has come and gone. In the Kelvington household, we cooked our turkey, enjoyed time spent with family, shopped a little, and started a tiny bit of Christmas decorating. I also managed to finish up this cute quilt top from the “Winter Flurries” mystery sew along with Fort Worth Fabric Studio.

This was such a fun project! I’ve never participated in a mystery sew along before, and it was intriguing to make a few blocks each week, all the while wondering what the final product would look like!

In week one we ...

Final blocks for the Winter Flurries mystery sew along with FWFS from Carried Away Quilting

Somehow or other, life got crazy in my neck of the woods, and I fell behind on a couple of projects. But I’m all caught up with my blocks for the “Winter Flurries” mystery sew along with Fort Worth Fabric Studio. Last night and this morning I sewed up the blocks from week three and four.  Next week we’ll be putting this little quilt together!

The week three assignment was the easy, peasy Flying Geese blocks, while we sewed up the beautiful Christmas Star blocks for week four. Now that I have all the pieces and parts, I ...

Winter Flurries Week 2: Mystery sew along with Fort Worth Fabric Studio from Carried Away Quilting

Hello quilting friends! I’m popping in to share my progress on the “Winter Flurries” mystery sew alongwith Fort Worth Fabric Studio. This week we made four Granny Square blocks to go with last week’s Economy block. I tell you what, the Granny Square blocks were so much fun that I have a hankerin’ to make a whole Granny Square quilt!

Last week I showed you my fabric pull for this project, but as I laid out this week’s blocks, I realized that my center square selection just didn’t have enough pop. I had chosen a ...

Christmas version of Fat Quarter Flourish (plus kits!) from Carried Away Quilting

Earlier this year I introduced you to a new pattern called Fat Quarter Flourish, a pretty 20 1/2" square table topper or wall hanging made from just five fat quarters! I’ve been waiting for the chance to sew this pattern in a holiday collection, so here goes . . . Fat Quarter Flourish featuring Christmas Figs by Fig Tree & Company for Moda.

There are so many lovely prints in the Christmas Figs collection that it was difficult to choose which five to feature. But that's what makes this pattern so fun. I don’t think you can go wrong, no ...

Pretty autumn mug rug quilted with Happy Cloud Batting from Carried Away Quilting

Today I want to share a product that is new to me, Happy Cloud Batting, an exclusive line of batting from Fat Quarter Shop. Recently the kind folks at FQS sent me a few packages to play with, and I’m so glad they did. I broke into a package of 80/20 Silky Blend precut 10” squares and used one to quilt a little autumn mug rug I pieced.

Typically I use 100% cotton batting for the small projects I quilt, but I have to say that I love the texture and slight loft of this 80/20 cotton ...

My pattern includes two size options. The large version (86” x 86”) calls for a layer cake, while the small version (38” x 38”) calls for a charm pack. Let me tell you, the large sized Next Up quilt is an awesome size for snuggling with your honey ~ nice and big. In fact, I ...
