Stars on Strings--An Original Design from TheEclecticAbuela

This quilt began on graph paper. I have an EQ program, but I was defeated by triangles!

Stars on Strings--66" x 88"

I tried this more than once. My first experiment was to use regular, brightly-colored strings.

As you can see, the red stars are lost amidst the chaos!

I went to neutral strings which worked better to show off the stars.

Please forgive the camera strap in the corner!

I stayed with this idea, though, for me, it was hard--I always want MORE COLOR!

The making wasn't too hard, though 60 degree triangles can be tricky to assemble ...

Autumn Stars--Another Mystery Quilt from TheEclecticAbuela

Okay--you can call me the crazy mystery lady!

I love making mystery quilts. I have a friend who works them up for a forum to which I belong, and I love her designs. The forum thread from which this quilt is made begins HERE.

Strings and Furrows from TheEclecticAbuela

Yet another string quilt! I do love them.

This one is a simple arrangement of string blocks and alternating white/beige HSTs that create furrows across the quilt.

I pieced the back from scrap 5" squares, and I used the trimmings from the back to make the binding.

I love the look of the scrappy binding, but with all those seams (thick!thick!thick!), it took me quite a while to hand sew it down to the back!

I love all the things you can find in a scrappy quilt.

Scooby Doo!

Final Two Leaders and Ender Quilts from TheEclecticAbuela

These are my last two Two-Rail Fence leader and ender quilts for my year-long project. I have enjoyed making and donating these. I've experimented with colors, fabrics, layouts, and quilting methods. And after making 11 of these, I'm done!

Boxes of Strings--Variations on a Design from TheEclecticAbuela

When I created the "Boxes of Strings" design, I was happy with my resulting quilt. Little did I know, however, that other quiltmakers would be interested in using the design as well.

I belong to the Quilting Board, a forum for quilters. When I posted the photo of my finished quilt and a tutorial about how I made it, another member asked if I would mind if forum members did a quilt-a-long with the design. I was thrilled! I knew I'd love to see variations, and this way, I wouldn't have to make several sample quilts myself.

Lotsa Dots--A Mystery Quilt from TheEclecticAbuela

You know me--I love mystery quilts!

A friend of mine on a quilting forum provides mysteries for quilters who enjoy mystery projects. I have made several of her quilts, and though I lagged behind on this one, I did get it finished.

Meet Lotsa Dots!

Most of the fabrics came from scraps and stash, though I did buy the sashing and backing fabrics for the project.

Below are pictures of a few of the other mysteries Judy has designed, and I have enjoyed ...

On Ringo Lake--Chocolate Lovers Edition from TheEclecticAbuela

I finished my version of Bonnie Hunter's mystery quilt called On Ringo Lake. I call mine the Chocolate Lovers Edition, since my cornerstones and other pieces are made of fabric printed with chocolates and chocolate chips.

I changed Bonnie's aqua to green, but I stuck with her other suggested colors.

Another Leader and Ender Donation Quilt from TheEclecticAbuela

I tried a different layout with this one (#9 of the project). It is also only two colors which is something I rarely do. For me, the more different fabrics, the better!

Two-Rail Fence Donation Quilt (62" x 74")

I do like the simple effect of only two colors. Sometimes it is good to push your own boundaries a bit!

Batik Leader and Ender Rail Fence Donation Quilts from TheEclecticAbuela

My personal leader/ender project has been fruitful this year. These are donation quilts #7 and #8!

Numbers 5 and  6 can be found HERE.

Numbers 3 and 4 are HERE.

Numbers 1 and 2 are HERE.

This time, I went with an uneven Rail Fence block to better show off the colors in the batiks I used. I did one in a stairstep layout and the other in a windmill layout.

Boxes Of Strings: An Original Design from TheEclecticAbuela

Update: I have added the basic instructions for this quilt to my sidebar. Click on "Boxes of Strings Instructions."

When I was designing and making Stringing Beads, I thought "what if?"--always a dangerous thought for a quiltmaker!

The centerpiece of the Stringing Beads block is a trapezoid shape.

Stringing Beads trapezoid

What if I made it a triangle?

I used the same size paper foundation (4.5" x 8.5"), and I arranged the strings with medium/dark tone on one side and light on the other.

All blocks have the same color orientation.

It ...

Fiber Tuesday 147 from The Quilting Room with Mel

Welcome back to Fiber Tuesday!  How was everyone's week? Well winter appears to have left with February.  We went from so much ice we couldn't leave the house to mid sixties.  I'm loving the weather.  The sun helps to chase away those winter blues that were starting to set in with the storms.

Fiber Tuesday 146 from The Quilting Room with Mel

Welcome back to Fiber Tuesday!  How was everyone's week? I am finally feeling 100%.  I think my week off, well mostly off, last week really helped me.  We had multiple ice storms last week.  So Wednesday was the only day that I had to work.

Fiber Tuesday 145 from The Quilting Room with Mel

Welcome back to Fiber Tuesday!  How was everyone's week? Remember last week when I said I needed to get caught up on a week's worth of work?  Yeah, well now I'm two weeks behind.  I felt fine but lacked energy after fighting the bug off.  I honestly don't remember the last time that a bug took so much out of me.

Welcome back to Fiber Tuesday!  How was everyone's week? Well, the flu bug finally found The Quilting Room.  It hit me Wednesday at work and today is the first day I have been out of bed and moving around.  Now, to get caught up on almost a week's worth of work.

Sapphire (Ruby) Stars is Finished from TheEclecticAbuela

Last year, Kevin the Quilter hosted a mystery quilt project. He called it Sapphire Stars, and it was fun to participate with others in creating a quilt.

His quilt featured blue, but I went with my favorite color--RED! I don't think I ever really understood the concept of light red, so my quilt doesn't sparkle like Kevin's, but I like it. Please pardon the bad pictures--I was battling both the flu and the wind!

Many thanks to Kevin for the great project.

Fiber Tuesday 143 from The Quilting Room with Mel

Welcome back to Fiber Tuesday!  How was everyone's week? We have clean water again.  The week without has certainly humbled me to the fact that not everyone has clean water and boiling water and bleaching dishes are just part of their regular days.  I attempted to design something out of the box this weekend and I'm thinking I have more gray hair and Paul was thankful for coffee to help him keep his mouth shut.

Fiber Tuesday 142 from The Quilting Room with Mel

Welcome back to Fiber Tuesday!  How was everyone's week?  This last week has been pretty rough.  I am looking forward to heading to the basement tonight to spend some quality time with my machines and a whole lot of fabric that I got over the weekend from friends.  It's great having friends who do costuming for a living and they save their scraps for us.  I have so many ideas to put them to good use.

Fiber Tuesday 141 from The Quilting Room with Mel

Welcome back to Fiber Tuesday!  How was everyone's week?  We spent a lot of quality time together this last week.  It was too cold to leave the house for a couple of days last week. The weather broke at just the right time before cabin fever completely set in.  We did get a lot of stuff done so that's always nice.

Fiber Tuesday 140 from The Quilting Room with Mel

Welcome back to Fiber Tuesday!  How was everyone's week?  We are freezing here!  The windchill in the morning is supposed to be around -20.  I am thankful that I don't have to get out in it but I know others will have no choice.  On cold days I spend a lot of time with my sewing machine and hot tea or coffee.  I have to go out to the garage to get to the basement so I need the warm drink to help me recover from those 30 seconds.  I know, I am a wuss when it comes ...
