Island Batik Vintage Reimagined from Goer

The products featured in this post were given to me by Island Batik and Aurifil.

This month we were asked to use a vintage quilt block as inspiration for our Island Batik Ambassador projects. I considered this challenge an opportunity to use Modern Traditionalism in my design, using a traditional block with some twist to modernize the look of it.

I chose the Antique Tile quilt block to work from. I shared my design process in a previous post, but these digital images show the block I started with and the mockup for the quilt that I made.

Island Batik Star Struck Quilt Tutorial from Carol Lyles Shaw

This month’s challenge for Island Batik is Star Struck and this is my quilt tutorial and free pattern for my modern version of a star.

I had a difficult time getting the color match on the full quilt photos! This looks a bit yellow–background fabric is actually white. See the close up of the star point below for the true colors.

The Island Batik Ambassador challenge this month was to create a Star Quilt.  I decided to take a modern approach and create an oversized wonky star using a limited color palette.  The modern design principles I played ...

Selvedge X Quilt Pattern Published from Carol Lyles Shaw

I am happy to announce that my Selvedge X Modern Quilt Pattern has been published and is available on Craftsy as a digital download.

We all love to save those beautiful printed selvedges.  And, we really mean to use them someday in a special project.

Love the selvedges with cool typefaces!

This pattern was designed to put selvedges to good use.

You have two options for using this pattern:

  • Make this pattern as a minimalist top to showcase cool selvedges.
  • OR…make this pattern as a backing and use selvedges from the fabrics on the quilt top!

When you make ...

Mod Hearts Free Pattern and GiveAway from Carol Lyles Shaw

I’m happy to announce the release of Mod Hearts, a FREE modern quilt pattern and a Fabric GiveAway!

I’ve always enjoyed seeing pieced heart blocks in so many quilts–it’s a traditional motif that quilters love.

Click this link to download the PDF: Mod Hearts Free Pattern Complete

I decided that I wanted to take a more modern approach to this appealing motif.  Using Electric Quilt 8 software, I fractured the heart into sections and made it more angular instead of rounded.

I also wanted to use improvisational techniques in how I chose ...

Making a Quilt Hanging Sleeve from Carol Lyles Shaw

Here is a tutorial on how I make and attach my quilt hanging sleeve. I use this method to make sure there is ‘slack’ in the sleeve.  It’s important to make your quilt sleeve more open so that there’s room for a pole or slat.  I’ve seen too many quilts in shows where the sleeve was sewn on so tight that the hanging rod caused the quilt to bulge out at the top.

I also like making a full sleeve because it protects the back of my quilt from rough poles sliding along when the quilt is ...

Alison Glass Mini Quilt #2 from Carol Lyles Shaw

Looking thru my blog draft posts, I realized that I never posted another piece of my Alison Glass Mini Quilt Swap story.  So here it is….

I was in an Instagram Alison Glass Swap. My Swap Mama asked me to be an Angel and make a mini for one of the team because their original partner unfortunately had to drop out at the last minute.  I had about a week to make and ship it.   OK…I said to myself, I can do this!

I wanted to make this the second in the series so that the design would relate ...

Binding a Modern Quilt from Carol Lyles Shaw

When I’m ready to attach the binding, I feel great.  It means that the project is done and the quilt is ready to be used or shared with others.  Hand sewing the binding down on the back of the quilt is a very relaxing process for me.  I don’t do a lot of handwork, so I enjoy some time for a bit of slow stitching in front of the TV.  And I love these small Wonder Clips.  They hold all the layers so securely and I don’t have to worry about stabbing myself on pins.

Types of ...

Mini Quilt with faced binding

Here is a simple tutorial for how I make a faced binding for my modern quilts.

You can download a PDF of the slides so that you can take notes as you watch.CL Shaw Faced Binding Tutorial slides

Hanging Sleeves:  I didn’t mention this in the video, but I attach my hanging sleeve to the back of the quilt by sewing the top of the sleeve about 3/8 inch from the top edge. I sew through the facing and backing and ...
