Rainbow Scrap Challenge 2022 and Comfort Quilts from The Cozy Quilter

Last year, I made a couple of RSC quilts using the monthly colours at Angela's blog. This year, in an effort to use up even more scraps, I will be working on three projects.  I managed to get one block for the first quilt done this week using leftover red 2.5" squares from last year's projects.  The white solid squares were cut from my solid scrap bin.

We took a long drive in the car this week to take our daughter and Finn home.  I volunteered to bind a comfort quilt for the Elgin Piecemakers Guild and ...

Retreat Sewing and a Comfort Quilt from The Cozy Quilter

I love going on quilting retreats!  Lots of uninterrupted time to sew, no meals to make and no dishes to do!    Christine and I had a wonderful time and both of us got lots of sewing done.  I made this cute little wall hanging--I called it "Gnome for the Holidays!".  The gnome block was designed by cottonandjoy.com.   I quilted it with my walking foot--inspired by a class I took with Jacqui Gering a few years ago.  I even added a hanging sleeve and have cut the dowel!  I will find a spot to hang my Gnome tomorrow.

I assembled ...

Packing up for another Retreat! from The Cozy Quilter

My friend, Christine, and I are off to another quilting retreat this weekend!  The weather looks good and won't interfere with our plans.  I have packed several projects to take with me including the Lupin Quilt (all of the blocks are made and the sashing and borders are cut out and ready to go):

A comfort quilt for the local women's shelter using bird blocks made by members of the Elgin Piecemakers:  (all sashing, cornerstones and borders are cut) The last block was given to me last week.

My modern sampler quilt: (all blocks made and the fabric ...

Kitchen Scraps Challenge and Another UFO Done. from The Cozy Quilter

Each year, the Elgin Piecemakers Guild issues a challenge to their members.  This past year, we were given a piece of insulbrite thermal batting and asked to make something for our kitchens using scraps.  On Thursday night, we met in person for the first time in ages and revealed our projects.  There were oven mitts, hot pads, a casserole carrier, tea cosies, etc.  Many in the group used selvages in their projects.  I decided to raid my denim stash (from old jeans) for my lasagna pan hot pad.  I have a large orange lasagna pan and always have to use ...

October UFO's and PomPoms! from The Cozy Quilter

I finally made my September block for the Elgin Piecemakers Guild Comfort quilt project this past week! We were each to make a bird block with a gray background.  We had plans to meet outside in September in someone's backyard but it poured rain the night of our meeting and it got cancelled so now, the bird blocks will be handed in with the October blocks this month.  I had already made all of my blocks for the rest of the year in the spring so this was the last one to make for 2021.  I used a Riley ...

Yellow and Gray Churn Dash, Pineapples, etc. from The Cozy Quilter

Despite some sewing machine challenges (it's in for repair now), I managed to finish the yellow and gray scrappy churn dash quilt this past week. I love this colour combination!  The backing is a Libs Elliott print which I had in my stash---but only one yard so I had to add a yellow strip to make it big enough for the backing.  The binding is a yellow Kona solid. The quilting was done with bright yellow Aurifil 50wt thread.

At a Zoom sew-in on Tuesday, I made a block for the September Comfort quilt for the Elgin Piecemakers.  The ...

Sewing My Scraps and some Slow Stitching from The Cozy Quilter

The colours for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge this month are light and medium/bright blue so I made two more blocks for my RSC challenge quilt for 2021. I used 17 different blues in each block.

Here are the five blocks I have made so far this year.

One of the guilds I belong to, the Elgin Piecemakers, has taken on a new charity project this year.  We have 20 members and we have each agreed to make 12 placemats before November to be distributed to all of the Meals on Wheels recipients in our county.  I got started on ...

Making Blocks from The Cozy Quilter

Happy Easter!

Lucky for me, the colour of the month at the Rainbow Scrap Challenge is Blue for April.  I had already started making blue blocks for my Colour Block Challenge quilt for April so these two challenges will be met together.  I ended up making 12 medium/dark blue blocks and then found I had a stack of light blue squares as well.  I made 4 light blue blocks and put them all up on the design wall to consider my next steps.  I looked at my stash and found some red solid fabric which I will use for ...

Stitching on Multiple Projects from The Cozy Quilter

The rainbow scrap challenge colour for February was yellow so I made lots of yellow and gray 16 patches which I used this week to make my version of the Colour Block March quilt Pattern.  I may or may not add borders to this quilt...it is currently about 45" square.  I will pick out some backing fabric soon and quilt this one myself.  I have several quilts in line to be quilted on my DSM.  Sometimes, the quilting mood hits and I get a bunch done all at once.  I am hoping this happens soon!

There are some leftover ...

Pineapple Log Cabin Class from The Cozy Quilter

This morning, I took a pineapple log cabin class through the Oxford Quilt Guild with Barb V. at Fun With Barb.  She was our Zoom speaker back in November and several members of the guild admired her pineapple log cabin quilt made with 1/2" logs. Someone on the executive suggested a class and so we invited Barb to return today for a Zoom class.  I contemplated fabric options for the quilt all week and, finally, just before class this morning, decided on orange and bright green scraps with a white solid background. Soon, I had enough scraps pressed and ...

Found my Sew-Jo! from The Cozy Quilter

I have had a productive week in the sewing room!  I think those scrappy colour blocks that I was making last week got me going again and this week I was on a roll.  First, I quilted and bound my January Colour Blocks quilt.  I considered a cross hatch but ended up with diagonal lines of quilting using light gray thread.

Green solid fabric was used for the binding.

I will add a label shortly.

I made a pink block for my Rainbow Scrap Quilt for this year.

I noticed after it was on the design wall that I made ...

Gift Making from The Cozy Quilter

This has been a busy week with not very much time spent in my sewing room.  I did manage to make a zippered pouch as a gift for a swap with one of my guilds. I need to get this in the mail this week so it had a deadline!  The pattern is from Noodlehead...I have made several of these pouches as gifts over the last few years.  I don't even need to look at the instructions anymore!

I have a stash of zippers in various colours for these pouches so I am always ready to make a ...

Binding and More Binding! from The Cozy Quilter

I took two comfort quilts to Julie, the long arm quilter around the corner and fellow Elgin Piecemaker member last week, expecting that they would not be done for a couple of weeks. I had just started to figure out which UFO I was going to tackle next, when I received a text from Julie to say that both quilts were done and ready for binding!  I picked them up the next day and got to work making the binding and machine sewing it to the quilts.

My hand sewing this week involved getting both quilts finished and ready to ...

Comfort Quilts, Blackwork DONE, and some Knitting. from The Cozy Quilter

Do any of you set goals for yourselves each week?  I have found that making myself a list of things I want to do each week helps me to stay on track and motivated during this time when I am mostly spending my time at home. My goals for this past week included getting two Elgin Piecemakers comfort quilts off to the long arm quilter. The first top was completed so all I had to do was wash the backing fabric, press it, sew one seam and it was ready to go.  I did not get a picture of the ...

A Little of This and a Little of That from The Cozy Quilter

The November Modern Block of the Month pattern was released this week at the Twilight Quilt Guild blog, so I dug out my fabrics and got sewing.  The chevrons were paper pieced. The glasses fabric will appear in every block in my quilt along with other assorted dots and stripes in orange and navy.  I was afraid I was going to run out of the gray hash dot background fabric but managed to find some at a localish store and had them ship it to me.

I added the final borders to my Summerhill quilt from Mary Elizabeth Kinch's ...

20th Anniversary Challenge for the Elgin Piecemakers from The Cozy Quilter

I belong to a small quilt guild--the Elgin Piecemakers--that recently celebrated 20 years of getting together to share our love of all things quilting.  We have 20 members and we meet in each others homes. There is always a wonderful social/snack time at every meeting.  In late 2019, we decided that we should celebrate our 20 years as a guild in a significant way.  Someone proposed an anniversary quilt challenge--we would each make our own centre block and then each month for several months, we would be given instructions on what to add to the centre block to make ...

Thank You for the Music (Music Challenge Quilt) from The Cozy Quilter

About a year ago, the Elgin Piecemakers Guild issued a challenge:  create a quilt that depicts a song.  We were given a piece of fabric with musical notes on it that we were to use in our quilts. The quilts were to be revealed last Spring but we were unable to meet at that time so there was an extension on the deadline.  We have now shown our quilts to each other so I can finally do a blogpost on my music challenge quilt.

When I think of music, my first thoughts turn to my dad.  He played the fiddle ...

Blackwork and Binding from The Cozy Quilter

I spent quite a bit of time this week in front of my sewing machine, but most of what I was sewing cannot be revealed yet.  I finished quilting a challenge quilt for the Elgin Piecemakers 20th Anniversary and did the hand stitching on the binding.  This is all I can show you for now.  I quilted this quilt with my walking foot on my DSM.

While the walking foot was warmed up, I started quilting my London Modern Guild HST BOM.  I'm using orange thread on this baby quilt.  I hope to finish this one shortly and should ...

Barn Raising! from The Cozy Quilter

Over the course of 16 months in 2018-2019, 10 quilting friends and I made and exchanged 20 neutral blocks each month.  We could use any neutral colours including cream, beige, brown, white, gray and black and each block was to be made using two lights and a dark or two darks and a light. This way, each of us ended up with 320 neutral blocks at the end of the swap.  I divided mine into two piles--1:  white, gray and black and 2: cream, beige and brown, and decided to make two different projects with my blocks.

I found some ...

Slow and Fast Stitching This Week from The Cozy Quilter

I like to have a variety of projects to work on at any one time so that I don't get bored (no chance of that for a very long time, if not ever!) so this week, as usual, I have a few things to show you.   First up is my fall themed comfort quilt block for the Elgin Piecemakers guild.  I have had that leaf fabric lurking in my stash for several years and it worked perfectly for this block.  (I even have some left...)

I have been cleaning out my fabric storage area and keep finding blocks and ...
