Drumroll Please!!! from Sew'n Wild Oaks Quilting Blog

 Hello Everyone,

As written through the paws of Mazey.

Boy, did I have to work hard today.  My forever parents held the drawing for the fat quarter bundles of "Journey to America" fabric.  I've been the very impartial judge before, so I know the routine by now.

First of all Mom wrote numbers on my doggie cookies.  I'm wondering if it is safe for me to ingest cookies marked with a Sharpie.  Oh well, if I can eat decaying mystery meat from the forest, I guess a little Sharpie won't hurt me.

I know that I have ...

 Hello Everyone,

My "Crossing the Pond" pattern is now available in my Etsy shop. To kick off the roll out of this quilt, Marcus Fabrics, generously and graciously sent me a box of Journey to America fabric to offer as a giveaway to my readers.

As soon as the box arrived, I immediately started in cutting it up into fat quarter bundles.

I will give away three of the bundles here on my blog next Tuesday, November 17th.

To enter the contest, just leave a comment on this post.  My beautiful Golden Retriever Mazey, will be the impartial judge, and ...

Crossing the Pond from Sew'n Wild Oaks Quilting Blog

Hello Everyone,

My new "Crossing the Pond" pattern is heading to the printer today.

This picture is a rendering from my EQ8 software of the entire quilt.  After I quilt it, I will do a photo shoot, and post the pictures.  In the meantime, this image is going to be on the cover of the pattern.

I love this quilt!  In the event of an evacuation due to fire, this quilt is going to be the second thing packed in the car.  Mazey will go into the car first, since she is my irreplaceable fur baby.

This was a very ...

The Lighthouse is in Sight from Sew'n Wild Oaks Quilting Blog

Ahoy Mateys,

Here is an update on my journey "Crossing the Pond".  The borders are on, and I'm doing a happy dance across the main deck!

The corners ended up being total serendipity.  I didn't have enough fabric for my border, since I changed my idea mid-float.  In the beginning I had no intention of using these two fabrics together in the border, so I didn't request a lot of it.  I worked with EQ8 software for a long time, and came up with this idea.  Both Mr. Joe and I liked this layout a lot.

My ...

Chinks in the Armor from Sew'n Wild Oaks Quilting Blog

Hello Everyone,

Here is what I worked on yesterday, the border on my new pattern called "Crossing the Pond".  I have three sides done, just one to go.

Today I will attach the borders to the quilt.  I also have to make the corner squares.   The entire time I've been making this quilt, I'm contemplating just how I'm going to quilt it.  I have a lot of light space to fill in addition to complex blocks.  My brain has been working overtime in addition to my hands.

Now let me tell you about yesterday, and explain the ...

Season of Fire from Sew'n Wild Oaks Quilting Blog

Hello Everyone,

Here is my progress on my newest pattern called Crossing the Pond.  It fills up my entire, large design wall, and the borders aren't on it yet.  I'm making the borders as we speak.

I want to thank you all for your outpouring of support and prayers for my state which is on fire.  The immediate threat to my home in Livermore has past, but the fire is still burning.

The warnings Sunday about a dry lightning storm with high winds for my mountain location were quite ominous.  All day long, we prepared for evacuation in ...

Crossing the Pond Update from Sew'n Wild Oaks Quilting Blog

Ahoy Mateys,

This week, I've been totally focused on my new design called Crossing the Pond.  I will have the quilt top together today, minus the borders, if I really "turn to". (AKA get to work!)

My original design for the ship in the center of the quilt was quite different than what I actually ended up doing.  During the mini-retreat at my sister's cabin last week, my friend Paula suggested I do a reverse applique.  I thought that was brilliant, so that's what I did.  I will fill the off-white with beautiful quilting when the time ...

Lesson Learned from Sew'n Wild Oaks Quilting Blog

Ahoy Mateys,

This is how I spent my day working on my new "Crossing The Pond" pattern. I put all of the blocks on my design wall and started attaching the sashings to my blocks......so I thought.  The ship on my journey was totally blown off course.

I always tell my students to make a "pilot" or test block before you continue with the entire quilt.  My blocks are perfect.  My sashing measured exactly 10-1/2" which it was supposed to be.  So I was good to go to start putting everything together.....right?  Sew, sew wrong!

My sashing ...

Crossing the Pond from Sew'n Wild Oaks Quilting Blog

Ahoy Mateys,

I've been blown off course over the past couple of weeks, and finally had a chance to get back to my new "Crossing the Pond" pattern.

I'll be adding my latest block to the design wall this week. It is so gratifying to watch the quilt come together.  Today I'll make more sashing sections, and watch the quilt grow.

Thank you all for your orders in my Etsy shop for my "Leaf Peeper" quilt pattern.  You've been keeping me very busy filling orders!  If I had another few hours in each day, I would ...

Crossing The Pond from Sew'n Wild Oaks Quilting Blog

Ahoy Mateys,

I've been holding up in my sewing room and working on "Crossing the Pond" to stay cool and beat the heat.  Here is an image of the components I made for the 10" block, and attached them to my block layout sheet.

This is an image of the alternate block that is part of the design.  I love working with the "Journey to America" fabrics by Judie Rothermel for Marcus Fabrics. They are all so gorgeous, rich is color and a nice variety of scale.

This is on my design wall today. I still have many more ...

Crossing the Pond from Sew'n Wild Oaks Quilting Blog

Ahoy Mateys,

The wind has been filling my sails while working on my new "Crossing the Pond" quilt pattern.  I've enjoyed every minute of working with the gorgeous fabric called "Journey to America" by Judie Rothermel for Marcus Fabrics.

I've been making components and placing them on my block layout sheets.  The block layout sheet keeps me organized, and I know right off the bat if I've made a cutting error.  If the piece doesn't fit, I recut the piece.  If the component doesn't fit, I make adjustments.  The adjustments usually entail pressing the daylights ...

Crossing the Pond Journey from Sew'n Wild Oaks Quilting Blog

Hello Everyone,

Here's just a little teaser to show you a block from Crossing the Pond which I exported from the project in EQ8.

Here's that same block with the sashing added in EQ.  I've been in my sewing room making lots of quilting components and laying them on a block layout sheet.  This block contains 2 sizes of half square triangles, and Flying Geese.  Once I get a lot of components made and trimmed,  I sit back and play with the components to see what looks the best together.  Once I'm satisfied with my color ...

Journey to America from Sew'n Wild Oaks Quilting Blog

 Hello Everyone,

Yesterday was a red letter kind of day.  A box arrived from Marcus Fabrics containing the entire Journey to America fabric line by Judie Rothermel.  The line commemorates the 400th anniversary of the voyage of the Mayflower, and the beginning of the Plymouth Colony.  The collection was created in a collaboration with the Old Sturbridge Village Museum.

When I saw the fabric on the Marcus website, I downloaded all of the images and started working on a new design in EQ8 software.  I have a good working history with Marcus Fabrics, so I felt very comfortable sending them ...
