Red series............. from Exuberant Color

I did not consciously start this year with a series of red quilts in just happened.  The red crazy pieced top was a carryover from last year and I got it quilted right away in February.  Over the first 4 months and 10 days into May I started 4 more mostly red quilts and finished the 4th one into a top on May 10.  The only other one that is quilted and finished is the red and white star quilt......three are tops waiting in line to be quilted.  I think this series was subconsciously my way of ...

Sewn together............... from Exuberant Color

I turned a couple blocks in different directions and then sewed the solid color crazy pieced top together.  It is small, only 29.5" x 43.25".  I am contemplating whether I want to add a border or not.  It will just live on a design wall for a few days so I can keep glancing at it.

Since it is getting close to the end of the month I need to finish something.  I sewed a backing together so I have one ready to load on my long arm.  First though I have to move all of the stuff ...

Setting triangles................ from Exuberant Color

I have 2 photos for you.  In this one you can see the colors I cut for the setting and corner triangles.  This is not what it looks like in person.  I need to turn some of the blocks in a different direction so the darkest strip in the block isn't touching a setting triangle.  I cut 4 of the fabrics into setting triangles and one fabric for all 4 corners triangles.

This photo from the doorway shows it more true in color and value.  All of the triangles are a similar value where in the photo above some ...

Time to make a decision........ from Exuberant Color

I need these blocks off the design wall so I brought up several solid color pieces and pinned them to the wall to audition for the setting triangles.  The very top is a dark blue slightly toward turquoise.  On the left is darkest gray, a purple and next lighter gray.  On the bottom is my favorite of the purples.  On the right side are 2 more shades of purple.
The reason I like this bottom purple is that it has the most red in it and it seems to belong more than the colder purples although the one on the ...

In the UFO box............ from Exuberant Color

As I was cleaning the basement this past week I moved the UFOs box several times.  I finally had to look through it and came across these blocks I made last year when I was preparing to teach a workshop on crazy piecing.  I had 8 blocks and kept thinking I needed to make either one more or four more blocks to make a small quilt.  Yesterday I remembered that 8 blocks will do an on point setting.  Now I just have to decide what the setting triangles will be and I should be able to finish it soon.

The ...

Some small sewing............... from Exuberant Color

I took my scraps from cutting this quilt and made crazy pieced squares and bordered them with another of the Keiko Goke prints.  My plan was to make mug rugs but when I laid all 4 blocks on the sewing cabinet I thought they might make a nice wall hanging or table mat with narrow sashing between blocks.  The blocks are 9.5" square.

Then I folded under one of the wider strips on each block and thought maybe this was better proportion if I use them for mug rugs.  They would be 8.5" x 9.5".

Here are ...

#2 finish for February 2019........... from Exuberant Color

I think it is only fitting to have a finished red quilt on Valentine's Day.

I have to admit that I wasn't feeling the love for this quilt in its unfinished state.  Crazy piecing is always so unfinished looking with all of the seams that come to the edges of the blocks and bias edges included.
Once the binding is on the quilt it is so nice and straight and elegant looking.  It really needed that nice dark binding to finish it off.  It ended up at 55" x 79".

This is my view as I'm approaching ...

Red binding............. from Exuberant Color

I sewed the binding on this red crazy pieced quilt yesterday afternoon and last night started the hand stitching.  I have one long side and half of one short side done.  At this rate it may take me 3 sessions to finish it.  I rarely do hand stitching during the daytime hours.

We had freezing rain last night....I think this is the third time since the beginning of the year.   I haven't tested any outside surface to see how slick it is.  I'm staying in today.  More hours for quilting.

Red............ from Exuberant Color

I was going to quilt the red and white star quilt but I couldn't decide whether to use red or white thread.  I finally decided I don't want to see white thread on red or red thread on white so I will hand baste it and quilt it in the ditch on my straight stitch machine.  I had this red crazy pieced quilt on my list to do in February so I pieced the back, loaded it on the frame and quilted it yesterday.
My thread is SoFine by Superior in a dusty red and I did a ...

6 blocks........... from Exuberant Color

I made 2 more blocks and rearranged them many times before I was happy with the layout.

Here is the edge to edge layout.  They will finish at 10" each so this is only 20" x 30" with this layout.

When I got home from the Thanksgiving trip my pink Christmas Cactus was really blooming.  There are at least 20 more buds so I should have pretty pink for awhile.

Winter is here........... from Exuberant Color

I was in Omaha NE from Thanksgiving day til Sunday morning.  We headed home with blizzard warnings with high winds in our path.   Luckily we only hit one area of about 90 miles that was pretty treacherous and were home by 3 p.m.  The real snowstorm and strong wind in our area started after 6:30 p.m.  Around 8 p.m.  I heard a noise that sounded like it was on my roof.  About an hour later a policeman came to my door and told me my phone line might be interrupted for awhile.  The tree across the ...

Happy Thanksgiving day!.............. from Exuberant Color

After I finished baking and cleaning up it was playtime for me.  The meal isn't at my house so I didn't have to clean house too.

I had lots of odd shaped scraps left from cutting the half hexagons last week from the African fabrics.

I decided I would do some crazy piecing and see if they would work well.

I was afraid they might be too wild looking but I think they came out okay.

Right now the largest square I can cut from them is 7.5" so I think I'll dig into the larger ...

A visitor's quilt......... from Exuberant Color

My niece Karen stopped by to show me the quilt she is working on.  She learned crazy piecing from me at her guild's workshop this spring.

I took photos from two angles.  She has 90 blocks sewn together now and is thinking of adding one more row on each of the 4 sides to fit her queen size bed.  I just love it and think she is doing a great job on it.

Look what came in the mail Friday!!  My favorite quilt in it is of course made with triangles.  Antique quilts were the inspiration for the quilts ...

Red and pink crazy pieced top........... from Exuberant Color

I think it's name should be "Luscious".  Making the crazy pieced blocks depleted all of my red, pink, burgundy and coral batik scraps and I ended up cutting a strip off yardage to finish it.  There are a couple orange pieces in there too.  I thought I had a large enough piece of red batik to back it but I couldn't find any last night.  I do have enough of several regular printed cottons.  The ending size is 56.5" X 80.5".

I'm receiving a number of questions about the Colorwash online Course that will open ...

Something easy........... from Exuberant Color

I just want something easy to work on while I plan a next project so I looked through my list of already started quilts.  This one fits the bill.  Both end borders are made and the spacer border is already cut.  The only decision I need to make is whether to add a border all the way around of the same deep red batik.

And now there are 8............ from Exuberant Color

I finished cleaning the basement and baked the 2 batches of cookies.  Then I decided I should try to clean off the sewing machine cabinet in the main floor studio.  I had the beginnings of 2 blocks and the pile of solid colors laying there so I made 4 more blocks.

Then I took them down to the basement and added them to the first 4 blocks.  The color is more true on the photo above.  They look pretty washed out in this photo.

We're expecting 3 really warm days in a row starting today.  We need rain and ...

4 blocks............ from Exuberant Color

I had a huge amount of clean up to do yesterday.  Almost every table in the basement had piles of fabric on them.  I have cleared off 4 of them and will do the rest later today.  Last night I was going through the workshop items and one of these blocks just needed one more strip and then trimming 2 of them into 10.5" squares.  I don't have a plan for them right now.  I have 2 more blocks started too.  All of these solid color fabrics are from the 1980s when I was teaching from Roberta Horton ...

Workshop results........... from Exuberant Color

The crazy piecing workshop went well.  Everyone went home with a few blocks and a new technique to continue with.  By the time we left it was warmer outside, not exactly no jacket weather but sure nicer than what we had last week.
I heard some doves in the backyard and was surprised to see the ring neck doves.  I don't think I saw any last year.

For those of you who asked for recipes for the scones:  I have to admit we used purchased mixes for them.  They were SO delicious that I don't think I would ...

Workshop day........... from Exuberant Color

Today is the crazy piecing workshop I am giving at my local quilt guild.  This is one of the quilts I showed them on Monday night at the trunk show.  I named it Rainbow River.

The first batch of scones were so good we baked another batch.  This one is apple cinnamon.  I had to try one before I remembered to take the photo.  My company is headed home this morning.

Crazy pieced blocks.............. from Exuberant Color

I am teaching a crazy piecing workshop on Saturday so I thought I would make some blocks in several different kinds of fabric for inspiration for the students.  The 30s reproduction blocks are trimmed with a 6 1/2" square ruler
I decided to make the solid color blocks larger so they will be cut with a 10 1/2" ruler.

I have company coming to stay for a few days so they can attend a funeral so I may only get a few more blocks made.  I have several examples of batik crazy piecing so that is 3 categories ...
