Coming Home Progress Report from The Cozy Quilter

My husband and I went to visit our daughter for the long weekend so on our way there and back, I stitched in the car.  I brought along the house borders for "Coming Home" and got all the doors and windows and clouds appliquéd.  There was a lot of traffic in spots so I had more sewing time in the car than I usually get on our way to where my daughter lives.

I just bought the material for the window and door on this house a couple of weeks ago specifically for this project. It reminds me of balls ...

Windows and Doors from The Cozy Quilter

I spent some more time appliquéing this week on my Coming Home quilt borders.  The top cloud is done... and I am still working on the bottom border in this picture. Sometimes, I am ready a bit early for work in the morning, and so I do a bit of stitching before I have to leave for work.  Every little bit counts!

This house is done now...

And I am still working on this one:

After I finish the door above, I will be working on the cloud above it.  There will be birds, kites, and stars added too, but ...

Pop-Up Picnic from The Cozy Quilter

Earlier this week, I finished off the appliqué for the second sun corner block for my Coming Home BOM.  The points got easier as I went along! This morning, I prepped the clouds as well as doors and windows for the houses.

This afternoon, the London Modern Guild hosted a Pop-Up Picnic at the Marsh Store in Coldstream.  A dozen of up brought our lawn chairs, our snacks, and our hand work projects for an afternoon of relaxing in the shade of a large tree as we stitched and knitted the afternoon away. Of course, there was an opportunity for ...

A Little of This and a Little of That from The Cozy Quilter

I have worked on a variety of hand sewing projects in the past week. I finally got back to working on my Coming Home BOM designed by Sarah Fielke.  There is a lot of applique to do for the next couple of steps so I am making an effort to get caught up.  There are two crescent moons and two suns in the current border.  I did the moons last weekend and this weekend, I am working on the suns.   I appliquéd the circles onto the yellow sun rays today at the London Modern Quilt Guild meeting.

Both suns are ...

Coming Home House Border from The Cozy Quilter

My goal for last week was to finish piecing the house borders of my Coming Home quilt...not quite achieved last week, but tonight, I finished off the last border.  I fussy cut the centres of my star blocks and used liberated piecing for the star points.

I like to think the little house above is the town library, or the home of avid readers.

A gardening gnome lives in this green and yellow house.

Here is a picture of all 4 borders around the centre medallion.

Some of the houses will be getting appliquéd windows and doors but I ...

This Week's Projects from The Cozy Quilter

This week's theme is home. I spent most of my sewing time this week working on houses for the next border of "Coming Home".  You can see that I fussy cut some bunnies for the middle of my liberated star house.  I had paper pieced 24 roofs for the houses a couple of weeks ago in preparation for house construction.

Here is my first of four rows of houses in process.  The green tape on each house has a number on it to help keep things in the right order.  Doors and windows will be added by hand applique ...

10 More Blocks from The Cozy Quilter

Since I had my fabrics out for this project, I decided to make a few more blocks this week.  Most days, I had a chance to sew for at least 30 minutes so I was able to get 10 more done.

Some blocks take a lot longer to make with lots of pieces to cut and sew together.

I am actually running out of some of the fabrics in my black and white stash which is great because some of them have been in there for a long time and needed to get used up.

I have now completed 77 ...

Coming Home is Coming Along. from The Cozy Quilter

I (finally!) finished appliquéing my last two tulip blocks for my Coming Home BOM project this week. It was fun picking out fabrics for each flower and the leaves.

All four blocks...done!

The points got easier with each tulip I stitched.

I put this together last night and put it up on the design wall for a picture.  I stressed a lot about colour choices for this part of the quilt.  It will be a queen sized quilt so there are 9 more months of blocks and borders to make.  The next border consists of little houses, some of ...

Tulips! from The Cozy Quilter

I have been working on hand appliquéing my tulip blocks for my Sarah Fielke Coming Home BOM this week.  The two magenta tulip blocks are completely done and I am now working on the top right turquoise block.  The stem is done and I am just starting the leaves...

I'm getting better at those inside points and the curves with each leaf and tulip...

Christine was at my house for sewing night one evening this past week so I made the 12 house blocks included in last month's instructions.  The next step will be out on Tuesday so ...

Coming Home and FLW from The Cozy Quilter

I have finally finished the second part of my Coming Home BOM quilt.  Everything is fitting together well so far with minimal un-sewing.  The four corners are up next and I have the pieces cut out and ready to applique.

The applique tulips will be turquoise and magenta (two of each).  I have started to applique one block and hope to get them all done before the third set of instructions come out at the end of April.

If you read my previous post, you will know that I am making a string quilt with material from my Dad's ...

Coming Home--Applique from The Cozy Quilter

Finn joined me on the couch this week for some applique for part two of Coming Home, this year's Sarah Fielke BOM project. The instructions for part two came out at the end of February, so I am a little bit behind, but I'm sure I will catch up at some point.  I am just enjoying the process of picking out fabrics and working away at the various parts of this quilt.

I finished sewing the starts to the magenta squares and cut them out into circles for the next stage of the applique.  Finn provided moral support ...

Hand Stitching Report from The Cozy Quilter

I have not blogged about my Frank Lloyd Wright cross stitch picture for the last couple of weeks but I have still been working on the metallic gold outlining.  The end is in sight...just a bit in the top section left to do. We took a car trip last weekend and I did quite a bit of stitching as my husband drove.

Finn is staying with us for 5 weeks as my daughter is really busy at work right now. We are going for a couple of walks each day.  He keeps us on our toes...

Finn is also ...

Coming Home and Frank from The Cozy Quilter

After admiring several quilters' "Down The Rabbit Hole" quilts over the past year or so, I decided to sign up for this year's Sarah Fielke BOM project, "Coming Home".  For a long time now, I have wanted to make an appliqué project. I have taken several appliqué classes through the London Friendship Guild and have completed several small class projects in the process.  The fee includes the instructions for each step, paper templates which I print out myself each month and video instruction by Sarah each month.  Since Sarah lives in Australia, this is my best chance to take ...

Preparing for the Coming Home BOM from The Cozy Quilter

As I told you a couple of weeks ago, I have signed up for Sarah Fielke's "Coming Home" Block of the Month (it is actually a medallion quilt...) 2019.  She sent out an email this week to everyone participating recommending that we each make a Block Book to keep our appliqué pieces in as we work on this quilt.  She sent us the link to a short video explaining how to make the book.

I had just purchased a set of 4 sewing themed fat quarters earlier this month so I decided to use them for my book.

This ...

Frank, Prague and a new BOM from The Cozy Quilter

As you can see, my daughter has made a lot of progress this week on her Prague cityscape counted cross stitch picture.  I'm told that the blue parts are all water of some sort...I wonder what colour she will stitch next?  It will be interesting to see the buildings...

I have been working on my new cross stitch picture---this one is the office window in Frank Lloyd Wright's studio in Oak Park, IL.  Unlike the last picture I just completed, this one is only three colours plus the outlining.  I will be stitching in the car again ...

A New FLW Project from The Cozy Quilter

I started a new Frank Lloyd Wright cross stitch picture today.  This one depicts the stained glass window in the ceiling of his office at his home in Oak Park, Illinois.  Our family toured FLW's home in Oak Park in 2013 when we were visiting Chicago.  I remember seeing this window in his office when were on the tour.

This is about 6" by 11" when finished so it should not take as long as the Fountain Glass Window to complete.

There are only three colours in this window and I am hoping I have enough of each colour ...
