Lola pouch ~ swap from Charm About You

Honestly swaps make me a bit nervous, what if the recipient judges my sewing or worse doesn't like what I've made for them. There have been occasions where I haven't taken part in swaps because of time constraints but then I feel left out. Knowing I could focus on one small make, I jumped in to join the pouch swap for the Purple Stitches Sewcial Retreat which was this past weekend.
Despite the worries, it's actually made easy when you join a swap as very often you are asked what you like / dislike and you are ...

Spring Fling quilt from Charm About You

spring fling quilt by Lucy Brennan | Charm About You

I'm so lucky that I get to have SO MUCH FUN creating designs with bright and beautiful fabric. For this quilt I picked out prints from Zuma by Tula Pink and a range of colours from Tula Pink solids.  A classic block in the centre and medallion style borders made with a mix of regular machine piecing and foundation paper piecing, make for a modern and dynamic quilt. My Spring Fling quilt pattern is in Issue 71 of Love Patchwork & Quilting - out now!

The detail in the prints is just amazing, there's so many that I thought were ...

Pineapple Crush Quilt ~ Aura Blog Party from Charm About You

pineapple quilt blocks made with Aura fabric

Mister Domestic invited me to his Aura Blog Party and I was like, "woaaaah.", and then saw the fabric and I was like, "woaaaah." and then it came to me that this would make the perfect pineapple quilt, "woaaahh..."

So this is my ode to Mr Crush Turtle, with turtles swimming through the denim water and geometric coral reef! A tropical blend of modern and traditional, this quilt is simultaneously structured and choatic. The clean lines of the pineapple blocks and the way I've placed the colours makes for a striking layout yet the prints themselves are scattered throughout ...

My Wonderwall from Charm About You

Wonderwall curved quilt by Charm About You featured in Love Patchwork and Quilting

It should come as no surprise that I get very excited about fabric. I've been sharing what I buy, stitch and make here for over seven years. The colours, prints, the way it handles, the endless combinations... fabric brings me joy.

The opportunity to get to chose and work with fabric is truly something special. I SQUEALED a lot when these beauties I picked arrived from Freespirit. Vibrant, rich, bright, happy colours of Designer Essentials Solids:

top row: Cosmo, Melon, Pomegranate, Gold, Tropical
bottom row: Serpent, Clearwater, Julep, Citrine

And I kept on SQUEALING because this was also in ...

Makes us stronger from Charm About You

I cannot tell you how very important the word of the year has been for me. Especially this past year. My word for 2018 was 'centre' and I did a good job of staying centred, to pay attention to what was affecting me and focusing on the core of what I wanted to achieve.

This year is really one of new beginnings, lifestyle changes and even more attention on that determination to make each day my own. I set my intentions for the year, this year it seems to be smaller and simple ideas that have taken priority. The little ...

planning party from Charm About You

charm about you, lucy brennan, quilt making

I like writing lists. I write them a lot, about all sorts of things! It's become essential for me, lists give me focus and direction. I'm joining Quilting Jetgirl for the #2019planningparty and in this post I am outlining a list of plans for 2019. I'm trying to stay realistic with a hint of optimism, bringing back some much loved projects and joyful sewing. This is what I want to do...

Pineapples and Paris Star quilt from Charm About You

It's been sew sew sew at my house! These projects each have a lot of seams and used up a lot of thread. Completely worth it though because they turned out really nicely.

My first project used the new Bird Pond collection in Blue and Teal by Tilda. I made two sizes of pineapple blocks for a 20" cushion front (which I did make into a cushion but I don't have a picture of the finish!). I chose to fussy cut the gorgeous Anemone print for the centre of the largest block and for the corner squares.

trip around the world quilt from Charm About You

trip around the world quilt charm about you

My husband sneakily took this as I was taking pictures of the finished quilt, I think it's a pretty cool photo!
Last week I made this trip around the world quilt for a Sewing Quarter demo. Now these aren't all colours I would normally go for but I really like this combination of pastel colours with the deep purple and bright blues. It's a mix of solids, Linea and prints from the Bijoux range by Makower.

⁂ baby you're a firework ⁂ from Charm About You

Fireworks Quilt by Lucy Brennan Charm About You solids quilt

Big, bright, bold blocks make up this Fireworks quilt I designed. It was fun mixing up the warm toned fabrics and the 14" blocks repeat to create an explosion of light against a dark navy background. The quilt is 56" square, I seem to have a thing for square quilts... they do work well for lap quilts.

I quilted in using my favourite straight line pattern, cross hatch, in a bright yellow thread to continue the theme. You can see the Sewing Quarter demo here.

When I get time I intend to recreate this using print fabrics, it would be ...

◊ Modern Scot Patchwork and diamond quilts ◊ from Charm About You

Modern Scot tartan patchwork quilt

Being married to a Scottish man I was happy to be given a project from the book 'Modern Scot Patchwork: Bold Quilts Inspired by Iconic Tartans' by Kathy Allen, to make for Sewing Quarter. The book features 8 different tartans and you can make various size quilt projects from each one. The colours chosen for this quilt work really nicely with the theme, as they remind me of thistles and that beautiful Highlands palette. The also make me think of Wimbledon and the Suffragettes.

Moroccan and Maple Leaf Quilts from Charm About You

It's back to work around here and, before I shower you with talk of the new makes, I want to share these quilts I made earlier this month. These featured as part of a 'trip around the world' theme on Sewing Quarter.

This design has a Moroccan tile influence, the colours and patterns give a rich jewel vibe too. The pops of pink add another dimension and create an interesting pattern themselves. It's a simple block I created using Creative Grids rulers. An important step in my quilt making process is to lay out all the blocks before ...

sweet baby makes from Charm About You

embroidery hooded baby towel

I have a couple of cute baby projects to share that I made for Sewing Quarter in celebration of Natasha's baby shower recently.
This adorable hooded baby towel is based on one I had as a child, that my kids all used too! It's a combination of soft plush fleece fabric and towelling. Neither of which is easy to hand embroider but I used the brilliant Stitch-n-Tear with DMC perle cotton #5 and it worked really nicely!

Christmas in July from Charm About You

I realise that some people are very prepared for the festive season and there are beautiful homes that are seasonally decorated throughout the year. As much as I admire that preparedness and seasonal living, it isn't something I've done much of. We have banners for certain celebrations, I made pretty spring bunting (free tutorial here) and, of course, we have Christmas decorations. Part of the reason I haven't taken the plunge into changing up the quilts and cushions we use depending on the season is because we don't have a lot of storage space! Despite that ...

four-patch flip quilt from Charm About You

Anna Maria Horner sweet dreams fabric quilt

I got to work with a glorious fat quarter bundle of Anna Maria Horner's Sweet Dreams collection to make this quilt. And I'm not afraid to say I'm smitten with it! The blue colourway of the prints were paired with Spot On in Teal by Makower, which lets the prints sing and coordinates nicely.  Spots are such a happy print, so cheery and pretty. They seem to have a retro vibe but play so well with modern prints too, anyone else think that?

making and choosing from Charm About You

Ready for another catch up! I've been sew busy, it seems round up posts are becoming habit. This space is where I record my makes, share progress and any tips I learn along the way... it's my makers diary if you will. And like a hand written diary it can be days between entries. It's enjoyable keeping up and documenting as much as I can and you get to find out a little more about the projects!

Most recently I finished a commission, I had made a personalised cushion for her elder brother so it was only ...

Creative Women's League Podcast from Charm About You

Surround yourself with good people. Whenever possible I like to read / watch / listen to positive people. There is grounded, honest and real talk to be found, which I gain confidence and inspiration from.
I've been following the Creative Women's League on instagram since it started. Kate is genuine and enthusiastic, and the network she's developed is so awesome. With two episodes a week, the Creative Women's League podcast is packed full of motivation and encouragement. I was thrilled (and also nervous) to be on this week's show.

#100daysoffocusedsewingbylucy from Charm About You

Last year I did 100 days of silent sewing, it was a great exercise in mindfulness that allowed me to simply sew without all the distractions of day to day life. It was meditative and gave me some much needed space.

Starting tomorrow on instagram #the100dayproject kicks off again - you can find all you need to know about here by clicking here!

You chose a project to do for 100 days, pick a unique hashtag and then share each day. Hosted by @elleluna and @lindsayjeanthomson, they provide encouragement and motivation. What I loved about doing this project is there is ...
