Improv 9 Patch......Blocks all done from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

 

Improv 9 Patch


I was able to piece 25 more 9 patch blocks

since July...





They are the white blocks around the edges

of the quilt top...










Right now the quilt measures 70 x 60 inches...

168 Blocks




I will fill in with solid white fabric 

all along the edges...






This work table has been cleared off...





I am piecing the vertical rows...

The left over strips will wait for a future project.






This has been a great summer project...

just pop into the Thread Shed and 

make a block or two

when I get some time to stitch!

An Evening with the Cattle... from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

 

One of our favorite things to do 

at the end of the day...


is to drive up river a few miles 

and visit with the cattle at sunset...



The lighting is so yummy


and the cattle are so extra beautiful 

this time of year.





This calf is 2 months old...





This heifer, Party Girl, is 2 years old...



These are our new bulls:


They are one year old...





They are very sweet and peaceful...





This is Mary Blackfeather, 6 years old





This is Golden Girl, 5 years old





This is Golden Girls baby sister, 2 months old

Cattle Drive... from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

 

We are moving the cattle to Spring Pastures...


Cow and Calf pairs are being herded along

the gravel road several miles up river...






The older cows lead the way...

they have made this trip many times

and know exactly where they are going.






The new baby calves stay close to mama...

this is their first cattle drive.






We make the trip in the early evening

when there is less traffic on the road...



2 hours later.....we are at the new pasture:


Plenty of tall, green grass for everybody !





The sun is just beginning to set

and the lighting is ...

Calving Season continues... from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full


We have been at it since February.....

Calving 


The Cowboy walks through the cow herd

each morning checking for new calves...






Tomato 8 and her new calf






The White Heifer and her new calf...





Yup, this just might be the super cutest calf

of the year !




Last week we rounded up the yearling calves...

We vaccinated, wormed, fly tagged

and moved them across the river 

to summer pasture:



This is Buffalo Bill
He was born last year and is now a year old.




It was in the 30's this morning
when we checked on the cow herd...

We are checking on the heifers and their calves

this morning @ the lower barn...






This is Golden Girl's sister,

Goldie and her first calf






Althea smells the new bale of hay

the cowboy just put in the barn for the heifers...




The Flowering Cherry Trees

in the front yard are putting on a show:


When the white buds begin to bloom

they remind me of popcorn popping





I call them the....Popcorn Trees

This morning at the Calving barn... from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

 

I captured a few images while we were

feeding cattle this morning...



Heifer Calf......Super Cuteness





Steer Calf

We call him the road runner...

he chases us down in the pick up and races us !





The calves wait around the end of the barn

while their mothers eat hay.


It rained last evening, so the fertilizer

is all soaked in...

we will just sit back and watch the grass grow !

Calving and Fertilizing... from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

 

The cows are still calving...



Here is our latest newborn.....Calf Number 54

Check out the red calf in the background,

she has come over to greet the new baby !






She is a real beauty......love that sweet face !

She may become a replacement cow 

in our herd some day.




We are still fertilizing hay fields...


The fertilizing spreader is 

kicking out the pellets...






I am looking out the 

back window of the tractor

while the Cowboy loads up the 

fertilizer spreader...




We should be done fertilizing in a few days,

then I can get back to driving my sewing ...

We are half way through calving season

with 50 calves on the ground so far...






We call this baby steer.....The Road Runner

He likes to race us 

when we drive through the pasture !




The Turkey Vultures have migrated back

to Western Oregon


They greet us each morning on our way to

the calving barns...





They enjoy a solar bath when the sun rises

each morning...





Their feathers looks so beautiful

back lit by the morning sun.



Yes, it is that time of the year...


Fertilizing the Hay Fields...





The Fertilizer Spreader is loaded up...

A new baby for Bow Tie... from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

 

She has a white bow tie shape on her forehead

so we call her Bow Tie.

She is one of the best cows in the herd...


She had a calf a week ago and 

unfortunately it died.

She has a lot of milk and does a great job 

raising a calf every year...




A few days ago one of our cows had twins.

Yesterday we gave one of the twins to Bow Tie...


The twin calf is wearing the hide of 

Bow Tie's calf...

It is important that the twin calf smells 

like her own calf.

Marv.....1 day old

In 2017 we raised Vern and Marv on bottles





Bottle Babies.....Marv and Vern

Vern is a beef calf rejected by his mother

Marv is a bull calf from the dairy





2017.......Vern and Marv.....8 months old

Just weaned from the bottle

( I think weaning was harder on me 

than it was them!)





2018.....Marv and Vern 18 months old




2019......2 years old:


Vernie loves the new baby calves,

helping the mamas lick them clean.

We are 2 weeks into Calving Season

here in rainy Western Oregon



The Cowboy has been spending lots of time

tagging new baby calves...





Mama Cows with their new babies...





I am in the pick up looking out the 

side view mirror...

the Cowboy is on the tractor loading hay





He has me all loaded up with hay...





This is one of our new heifers, Vicky,

with her very first baby.

She is a great mama cow already !





Each morning baby calves greet us when

we walk into the silo...

Pick Up Sticks.....Trimming from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full


Trimming... 


I spent some time this week trimming blocks...





Pick Up Sticks Quilt Blocks...





Trimming the blocks down to 10 inches...



have created 30 Pick Up Sticks Blocks


Here they are timmed down to 10 inches
and ready for borders.





We will stitch the borders on next week.

Remember this little calf born in....2016

 


Golden Girl




This morning we went across the river to check on
the mama cows in the silo...

this is what we found...


The Cowboy in the barn with
Golden Girl and her new calf...

The morning sun was shining in from the back of the barn, so as I captured the picture from the front of the barn,
the images created a silhouette...
I love it !




Golden Girl is now 5 years of age...

She is an excellent mama cow.






She has a sweet, black, heifer calf...





This is the 9th calf ...

We have our first baby...



The Cowboy has tagged Calf Number 1





It is a little, black, bull calf...





Mary Black Feather and her new calf

She is an excellent mama cow.  

Her calf is strong, eating well and follows her everywhere.


We tagged 3 calves as of today

with lots and lots more to come !
