Beginner's Journey: First Time Sewing with Canvas from Art Gallery Fabrics-The Creative Blog

Hello again, makers!

Canvas mexican dressBLOG

Today I’m excited to have started a new chapter in my sewing journey, and it was to use another substrate I wasn’t familiar with. I really wanted to learn more about our canvas substrate, so what better to make a project with it? First thing, I thought of sewing was a tote because I wouldn’t be afraid of cutting a lot of pieces, and it could also be simple enough for any beginner to make! I started this project on the first day of summer so I was inspired by the summery canvas print ...

Master the Flying Geese Block! from Quilted Joy

Once you’ve caught the quilting bug, there are certain blocks and shapes you’ll start to see over and over again. Some of those blocks will be super simple to piece, others will make your brain work a little harder!

Flying Geese block in a sampler quilt

The Flying Geese block is one you’ll see all the time. It pops up in sampler quilts (like the image above), in borders and sashing spaces, and it’ll even be hidden within blocks (like the chevrons in the balloon pictured below). But this block is one of the blocks that can be a little challenging. If you ...

Video Tutorial: Beadboard from Quilted Joy

For my latest video tutorial I thought I’d share how to quilt one of my go-to border designs – Beadboard! If you haven’t already tried beadboard or piano keys I highly recommend you give it a try. It’s super easy to quilt and it looks so nice. You’ll also get to see how I use a ruler. Never forget the first rules of ruler work: always use your ruler base and a ruler foot. For APQS machines, the ruler foot is that high profile, closed toe foot that came with your machine. Of course, you don’t ...

In February I’ll be teaching my hands on Breaking into Freemotion on the Longarm Class and I’d love for you to join me!

I designed this class with my wonderful longarm renters in mind. We’ll spend a few hours practicing easy free motion quilting designs starting from a worksheet of designs to practice on paper. Then you and a partner will move to the machines and practice ...

Beginner’s Guide to Machine Quilting: Quilting Feathers, Part 1 from Quilted Joy

One of the techniques many new (and experienced) longarm quilters want to jump into is quilting feathers. Who can blame them? Feathers are a classic and beautiful quilting design. Unfortunately, they can be a little challenging. I’ve heard a few quilters say they simply can’t do feathers. Practice is the key to mastering feathers on your longarm, but it also helps to find the style of feather that speaks to you.

Did you realize there are a huge variety of quilting feathers? If not, I’d highly recommend you jump over to the APQS blog. We recently began ...
