Batting Average? from From the Strawberry Patch...

I usually order my batting on thirty yard rolls and receive it, on average, within a week. That all came to a screeching halt a while back. The batting orders are running way (w-a-a-a-y) behind. I contacted the supplier that I use  as I was getting down to the last few yards and learned that there was at least a six week backlog~ yikes! I hadn't planned on that. A quick perusal around other sites

Thoughts on Batting from Essie's Quilts

The top is finished and the backing has been pulled together. Now we’re ready for the best part, the quilting. But we have to have something in the middle to make it into a quilt. I have some thoughts on batting that I’d like to share. It’s the least appreciated part of the quilt. But it does most of the work of making a quilt either soft and warm and cuddly, or wall hanging worthy. So you have to choose wisely.

LAL#8: Fast & Frugal Method for Joining Batting Scraps by Machine from Cheeky Cognoscenti

After loading the backing of my Modern Baby Clam Shells quilt on my frame a few days ago, I discovered that the package of crib sized batting I was planning to use was going to be too small for my 42" x 42" baby quilt.  Why do the batting manufacturers assume that everyone is making rectangular baby quilts, anyway?

With no nearby quilt shops open on a Sunday evening, I was determined to come up with a solution that didn't require shopping.  I briefly considered hacking a piece out of one of the batts I'm saving for larger ...

Machine Quilting a Wool Applique Quilt - A Sue Spargo Pattern - With Natalia Bonner from Piece N Quilt

Hey friends! I'm loving this cute quilt. This quilt is a Sue Spargo, incredible hand applique quilt that was made by my client Jan.

I really enjoyed custom machine quilting this fun quilt. Quilts like this make me feel like I get to just doodle and draw, with thread, all over the quilt top.

We've create a fun little YouTube video sharing a bit of my process machine quilting this quilt, and we've got a deeper look into my machine quilting over on my Patreon page.

Hope you all can find just a little bit of machine ...

LAL#3: The One Where Rebecca Finally Finishes a Quilt, but Doesn't Love It Anymore from Cheeky Cognoscenti

Happy Tuesday, friends!  Welcome to another Long Arm Learning linky party!  I actually have a finished (long arm quilted) quilt to share with you today, my FIRST finished quilt of 2020 -- and yes, I do know how pathetic that is to be finishing my first quilt of the year in mid-August.  My Sermon Scribbles quilt is FINISHED, as in quilted, labeled, bound, washed, and photographed!

I started piecing this in November of last year, and loaded it on my frame for quilting in April, just as this crazy pandemic lockdown was settling in.  From beginning to end, this silly quilt ...

Happy Birthday to Me! 47 Is Gonna Be My Year of Fearless Free-Motion and Ruler Work Quilting from Cheeky Cognoscenti

I am finally having fun with free motion quilting on my long arm machine!  Yay!  The chalk pounce stenciling is imperfect, as it smudges and disappears while I'm quilting, but all I really need is a vague guide anyway for spacing and the angle of the curls.  If I mark just one motif with chalk at a time and then quilt it right away, it serves its purpose -- and I have zero fear that the chalk won't come out of my quilt, since it's all bouncing right off the quilt without settling into the fibers in the ...

The Tension Wrecker Apprehended: Pigtail Guide on M-Class Bobbin Case Increases Bobbin Tension! from Cheeky Cognoscenti

Good morning, friends, and happy Sunday!  I've just returned from "Drive By Communion" in my church parking lot!  I kid you not -- Crazy times.  We watched the live streamed worship online this morning as usual (or, as has BECOME usual since early March), but this is the first Sunday since early March that they've offered in-person communion in the parking lot, served by masked and gloved pastors.  We are blessed at Christ Lutheran with church leadership that is faithful, creative, and prudent.  We didn't see a lot of cars when we went for Drive-By communion following the ...

Batting time! from Applique 'n Patch Quilting

How am I amusing myself during our virus shutdown?

Do you remember seeing this photo in a July 2019 post when my young great niece was visiting and after coming back from using the bathroom and the look on her face said it all?  Well, since then, more batting pieces were added and the shower stall was bulging almost to the top and bags kept falling out of the opening.  Time to deal with them!

For now, just the 80/20 cotton/poly batting pieces are being used.  The 100% poly batting pieces will be dealt with later.

Not all ...

How to bind a quilt by machine that looks near to invisible from Quilt Social

The fabric’s been chosen, the quilt top’s sewn and the quilting is done. Now it’s time to add a binding to finish the Spring Blossoms for Mom lap quilt. I really don’t want to mess it up now and it’s all about the finishing touches that sometimes make or break a project. No FOB (fear of binding) allowed.

There’s a way, yes there is… to add a binding to a quilt by machine that does not look wonky, messy or unprofessional. Today, I’ll explain this process to you. You’ll need Gütermann invisible ...

UNIQUE pattern tracing film helps to audition quilting options from Quilt Social

Sewing of the quilt top Spring Blossoms for Mom is complete. Quilting decisions can now take place. It’s important after all the work sewing the quilt, the quilting be considered carefully.

Quilting design factors

  • How much do I want the quilting to show on the front and the back.
  • What color of thread should be used.
  • Which fabrics need enhancing or showing off.
  • Scale of the quilt blocks and in this case appliques as well.
  • The use of the quilt. i.e. Quilt show worthy, art quilt to be hung, utilitarian?
  • How much washing may or may not take ...

Gütermann cotton and invisible nylon threads for piecing and applique from Quilt Social

The last few days, I’ve discussed the materials needed and prepared the fabric for a really fresh Spring Blossoms for Mom lap quilt using HeatnBond Lite iron-on adhesive to make the tulip appliques. This quilt will be an awesome Mother’s Day gift this spring. I’m ahead of the curve and will have it made in advance. Today I get to sew with Gütermann cotton and nylon (invisible) thread. It’s sew time don’t you think?

Sew the background

  • Gather up the background strips and leave them in order from 1-5 as discussed yesterday.
  • Sew 7 strip ...

How to prepare applique pieces for quilting from Quilt Social

Today, I’ll discuss how to prepare the strips for the background of the Spring Blossoms for Mom quilt I discussed yesterday as well as the applique fabric for the tulips with HeatnBond Lite iron-on adhesive. It’s so easy to applique with HeatnBond Lite iron-on adhesive and this technique will open your mind to thousands of applique possibilities.

As Time Flies By... from From the Strawberry Patch...

It seems like I just indulged in this all-too-wonderful annual treat; the limited- time-only peppermint chocolate chip milkshake! Speaking of limits, that's exactly what I put on myself when it comes to this splurge-- ONE A YEAR. Well, it might seem like I just indulged in one but it's been a year already. Oh, my! And as if I needed further proof that time is flying and leaving me in its dust,

My shopping trip from Crazy Quilter on a Bike!

If the economy were to rely on me to stay strong, that wouldn't happen. I'm not a big shopper. Not on-line, not in person. And the number of marketing e-mails that get blasted to us EACH and EVERY day is totally insane. I don't subscribe to many, but the few that I do? It's become a daily (if not more frequent) barrage of Black Friday madness. STOP!!!!  I know where you are if I need you.

However, from time to time, I do venture out with money in hand to buy something. The weather has been ...
