Three quilts left my house............ from Exuberant Color

A couple of my favorite people stopped by yesterday and I let them choose some quilts.  This was the first one they chose.  It is 70.5" x 90".  It was finished in 2014.

This is the second one they chose.  It is 66" x 91" and has 120 different batik fabrics in it.  I always wanted this one to go to someone special.  It was finished in 2017.

This is the third one they chose, one of my very favorites.  It was finished in 2021.  It is a scrappy batik Bear Paw  with a favorite batik for the border ...

January 2023 monthly recap............ from Exuberant Color

There were 2 total finishes in January, one at the beginning of the month and the other at the end. The neutral color batik quilt on the left is 54" x 74.5".  On the right is Scrappy Friendship Star 47" x 59".

In between those 2 finishes I made 5 quilt tops.  Two of them were made from Kaffe fabric strips that were cut about 10 years ago so they went together fast.  Top left is a 16 patch baby quilt top 40.5" square.  Bottom left is Chroma Zone, all 9 patches with 5 light/4 dark.  Most ...

Quilted........... from Exuberant Color

Success again, quilting done.

Again I did the organic straight lines, random spacing.

I used this variegated thread on this quilt.  I think maybe it will work for the next quilt I'm going to finish too.

Every wobble is a step I am taking as I walk sideways while I quilt, moving the machine from end to end and back again, row after row.  I think I have now figured out how to avoid that but this one is very organic.

I bought a batt of this variety to try it out and decided I liked it.  Then I ...

Busy day............ from Exuberant Color

There wasn't much picture worthy done yesterday but I accomplished a lot.  I got this backing cut, sewn together, pressed and loaded on the longarm.  I also did the staystitching around 3 quilt tops, 2 from last year and one new one.  Enough space got cleared on my big table in the basement to cut the batting for 2 quilts today.  I sorted several piles of fabric and got some of it put away.

We got a crunchy layer of icy mix Saturday night so I was happy when my snow plow guy came early yesterday afternoon and cleaned ...

Batik Diamonds, big and done! from Art In Search

A while ago, I bought some batiks on Etsy that were very reasonable. I think they were Boundless. I bought a layer cake and some jelly rolls. The jelly rolls made an Upstairs, Downstairs and I sewed the layer cake to kind of grunge white 10" squares. I made HSTs by sewing around al 4 sides, and then cutting diagonally twice. The trimming is the long part, but I used the Clearly Perfect slotted trimmer ruler and I had to cut only 2 sides. I showed the layout before. I was able to web it during the fall quilt retreat ...

Neutral quilt top................ from Exuberant Color

After pressing the neutral quilt top I put it up on the design wall for its photo.  It is amazing how many secondary designs there are when it is just 2 blocks alternated all through the top.  It is only 42" wide and 66" long.  If I were reclining in my chair it would be big enough to cover me while I nap.  Since I probably won't keep this one I think I need to make it wider somehow.

Just for kicks I opened the box with 182 sixteen patch blocks from the same assortment of fabric and placed ...

A little neutral progress............ from Exuberant Color

All of the blocks I had sewn previously were pressed yesterday and I started playing at the design wall.  I don't want to go any farther until I get the rest of the blocks assembled so I get the variety spread out.  This will be a small quilt.  That means I'm not cutting any more triangles unless I need a couple to finish this.  Right now it is 42" wide and I think there are enough triangles to make it 66" long.

Rain last night and some predicted for today.  We are short of moisture this winter so ...

No thread breaks.............. from Exuberant Color

I changed the needle but left the same neutral thread on the longarm and quilted this scrappy Friendship Star.  No thread breaks, none.  I have flannel on the back of this one and it will be a comfort quilt for someone.

Loops, big ones, small ones going both left and right, perfect for a soft quilt.  Top thread is So Fine in a light beige.

Then I made the 15th block and this will become a small quilt soon.  I'm thing about a stripe for sashing. I just need to decide which color.

Three more light neutrals were cut ...

More of the same............... from Exuberant Color

As much as I like these neutral batiks I'm ready to move on to some color.  Just a couple more days......  I sewed some more little blocks and I will  need to find 3 new fabrics to match up with the single stacks on the bottom left.  There wasn't enough contrast with the pairings I had chosen.

I'm going to go with layout 3 from yesterday's post.  I will be able to just sew 4 randomly chosen blocks into a larger block and then one last layout on the design wall and get it done.  I ...

First quilt top of 2023............. from Exuberant Color

The iron finally got turned on.  I don't know what my hang up is but I always procrastinate until I have a pile to press.  This top is finished at 45" x 54".  I just love this one.  The simple 9 patch wins again.  I read that 9 patch should be your first block when you are learning to piece blocks.  My first block was 8 point star with Y seams and I created it by machine.  Then I read that block should only be sewn by hand.  I just wasn't following the rules and now 65+ years ...

Playing with neutrals.............. from Exuberant Color

I did some die cutting for a couple quilts, one being these neutrals.  I cut the 3 light colors at the top right.  I sewed one group together into squares.

I had every intention of changing the needle in my longarm and loading a quilt but instead the day got away from me.  I did play with the one group I sewed, a pretty low contrast group.

There are lots of possibilities of what to do with these squares and I have no idea at this point what I am going to do.  Just mindless sewing again.  Maybe today I ...

Choosing binding............. from Exuberant Color

The binding is finally selected and cut for the colorwash wall hanging.  It is very dark, dull purple.  You could almost mistake it for dark brown.  Nice and neutral.

I got it sewn on and hand stitched about 4" to make sure I like it.  I think it works well so I'll be stitching away today.

I did another load of laundry yesterday and there is still one more load to do today.  I usually do a load once every 5 days, dark one time and light the next time.  I heard recently that the younger generation doesn't ...

Miscellany............ from Exuberant Color

A Christmas present arrived at my house yesterday.  I haven't spent much time looking at the book yet but I'll be going through to choose my favorite quilt soon

I opened to the first page and found this.  My daughter attended Kaffe's presentation in NC in October and she asked Brandon and Kaffe if they could personalize my book.  Wow!

In case you missed this in the last photo.........

Speaking of Kaffe, I got a few of his new 85 and Fabulous fabrics.  Since I have some pieces of the originals which he has repeated for his ...

Multicolor batiks........... from Exuberant Color

Most of my batiks are sorted by color but then there are the ones that are too multicolor so they get their own shelves.  Last night's fun was taking them down and sorting them by under a yard and over a yard.  This will make it so much easier for me to find backings for my colorwash quilts or any other small quilt.  I'm loving the nice neat stacks.

My favorite find was this purple and gray blue mottled fabric.  I have a half yard of it.

I found 5 other mottled fabrics that need to go down ...

Niece and Nephew Quilts are Finished and A Recap from Sew........This Is My Blog

I've been sharing with you the quilts I've been making for my nieces and nephews, the ones who have not received one in a while.  I overlooked three of them so thought I'd get caught up on that and do a recap.

The ones I've already posted about are Josh, Ashley, Laura, Nikki, Travis, Paige, Natalie, Emily, CarrieKarlie, Kourtnie, and Kacie's. (Each name has a link attached in case you'd like to see them.)  All of them were made since 2018.  Thank goodness, I have a fantastic quilter (Shirley Jackson) I can depend ...

Photographer was tired............ from Exuberant Color

I was so tired by the time I got to the photography so this Sunday only project is a little tilted.  I have sewn on side borders.  I had 3 leftover strips of triangle squares so I incorporated them in where they matched the orientation in the center blocks.

Then I thought maybe I need to add another border after the first one.  I think the strips need to brighter colors than these that were conveniently laying on my table Since I need to lengthen it more to get it to be a better rectangular shape, it means at least ...

Unique batiks............ from Exuberant Color

I bought some unique batiks in the 1990s that make very interesting backings. You can see the look of the large scale stripe backing and the quilt top I'll pair with it.

It's time to start basting again. I'm excited to finish this one because its a sample for my class.

It's been almost two years since I've offered my Colorwash class (which is how to master color and value). A lot of you have been asking when it would be offered again...and I'm happy to say, very soon.

I created a die ...

Sunday only project............... from Exuberant Color

I got busy early and decided on a layout for this project. For anybody new wondering what is a Sunday only project, it is one I pull out to work on only on Sundays.  It went back in a box each Monday morning to be brought out again the next Sunday.  In this photo I have sewn all of the horizontal rows.  There were 3 blocks with 8 triangle strips and one block with 4 strips in each horizontal row.  Since it is only 2" off of square I need to add something to make it more rectangular.

This is ...

A finish for November........... from Exuberant Color

A few sessions throughout the day and the hand stitching on the binding was finished.  I was surprised!  I thought it would take longer. The batik I used for binding wasn't one of the tough ones to stitch through.  I will probably try for a better photo downstairs soon.

The backing I originally chose was a moss green with burgundy and muted gold.  I decided I needed to use the prettier blue one instead.

This one is 55.5" x 71" after finishing the binding.

I pressed the Kaffe stripe quilt top too.  I'm so glad I stuck ...

Sewn, not pressed.......... from Exuberant Color

The quilt made with Kaffe Fassett yarn dyed woven stripes is sewn together but not pressed yet.  It is going to make a very lightweight quilt when finished.

Earlier yesterday morning I trimmed the mottled batik 16 patch quilt.  The backing is a much richer blue color than this photo shows.  I cut the binding and sewed it on last night and started the hand sewing but got only one side finished.  Hopefully I can finish the hand stitching in a couple days.

I was looking for something in some older Kaffe Fassett books and found that the Shards quilt ...
