Organizing and playing......... from Exuberant Color

In addition to going through all of my books I'm still trying to get the basement area organization done.  I had a few blocks to put in the batik orphan block box so I decided to check on what was in there again.

There are some pretty ugly blocks in the mix and some I really love.  There were enough more blocks to change the design wall one more time but I have seen enough now.  I need to sort the blocks by size and clip them together before I put them all back.  I need a bigger box ...

First quilt top for October................. from Exuberant Color

I was hoping to have this top done in September but after I squeezed in the 65th high school class reunion I could see it wasn't going to happen.  Now I have a great start for October.

This is made of African fabrics and mottled batik (almost solid) fabrics.

I intended to find an African fabric for some alternate plain blocks but instead looked on my 2 shelves of multicolor batiks.  I know I got this batik on sale, deep discount, because it wasn't selling well.  I only had a yard so I got twenty 8.5" squares ...

Auditioning the lime batik............. from Exuberant Color

I decided to cut one strip of the lime batik into squares to see if I was going to like it.  This is the first 34 of the 16 patch blocks.  The quilt will have 8 across and 10 down so this is just a sampling.  I like it so I will be cutting more of the squares and sewing the 34 duplicate 16 patch blocks.  Then I'll decide how many more blocks I need to piece.

We had several hours of light rain yesterday and got .35".  We're still at a deficit but I was happy we ...

Border auditions from Bizarre Quilter

How pretty does this look?

It takes a lot longer to trace these out than it does to stitch them!

Kind of frilly, like a seaweed.

Now, which of these looks better at the edge of the cushion?

Cornerstones or no Cornerstones?

I need to sit on this.

Which do you prefer?

More prep work........... from Exuberant Color

The first project of the day was to find a backing fabric for a colorwash wallhanging.  i looked through 2 stacks of multicolor batiks and decided on this one.

Next I cut 2 more batting pieces for quilts that are next in line.

From my kitchen window I could see some orange flowers that were taller than the Brown Eyed Susans and had to go out and investigate.  There are 3 Cosmos that came up from seed.  This is the same location where the Four o'clocks were but I don't see any of them this year.

I think ...

More half rectangle blocks........... from Exuberant Color

Yesterday morning I was straightening up one area in the basement and noticed this pink and blue batik with little animals on it.  Since I have designated the pink twisted ribbon top as a baby quilt I decided this will be the backing fabric.

I mowed the grass in the early afternoon and then last night sewed some more half rectangle blocks.

(Anonymous: Yes I am die cutting the half rectangles)

There are 134 blocks in these piles and I have pressed 40.  I need 66 more so there will be some more sewing tonight and probably Friday night too ...

Diabolical Jane from Becca's Crazy Projects

I finished the Diabolical Jane quilt top in June 2021. I picked this great pink for the quilting.
Mostly because it coordinated with the quilt top and the backing.
I loaded it onto the frame.
I used this great all-over quilting design called Lace Agate Meander by Bethanne Nemesh. Her quilting is so inspiring. (Yes, that photo is blurry. Dreary winter days do not make for good lighting or photos.)
The backing fabric is delightfully colorful.
Now it can go in the stack of quilts waiting for binding.

If this style is something you would like to try I recommend ...

sea swept finish from Making A Lather

Sea swept is finished and ready for our Spring guild quilt show. This was my January one monthly goal at elm street quilts. It is a beautiful quilt. I really like the colors, and, snails trail has been on my bucket list for years. All I needed to get started, was my sewing friend deciding she wanted to make one too. I started cutting in May 2021.

86 x 99

25 yards
I used a  wide flannel backing and free motion swirls on the longarm. I used leftover scraps for the binding.

This is all we had to make this ...

A new year- a new monthly goal from Making A Lather

I can't believe it is a new year already. So much possiblity ahead. Good or bad, I feel blessed knowing I am God's child and He will direct me for good.

I think my last post for this quilt was here in September 2021. This is one of the quilts I want to enter into our Spring quilt show 2023. I need to make sure I get it really ready in time. I will make this my January one monthly goal. I need to check on borders and find a back and binding for it. It needs quilting ...

Two layouts.................. from Exuberant Color

I made 7 more blocks to go with one of the sample blocks and put these up on the design wall overlapped so the strips line up like they do on the Tapas pattern.

What I really wanted to see though was the 8 blocks in the alternate layout that I came up with.  I have 14 more stratas to sew in addition to the duplicates of the 7 new blocks.  One strata makes 2 blocks.  If I use this second layout I need to make 2 additional stratas.

I have had this wallhanging basted and ready to quilt on ...

TRAIL TALES from Q-BITS

A traditional quilt block that looks more difficult than in actual construction is "Snail Trail".  It is really just a simple "square within a square, within a square, etc".  The difficulty is in keeping track of fabric and color placement to bring out the snail's trail.

I wanted to get out of my usual color and fabric modes plus I got a deal on some batik fat quarters; so I decided to give it a go.   A four-inch snail trail is perfect for a new quilting adventure!!

THE STATS:  "Trail Tales", 2022, 31"x31", Paper Pieced, Machine Pieced ...

Friday check in: welcome autumn! vintage finds, OMG all set, and something new from With Strings Attached

It's gotten so that if I don't take a good walk at least every other day I really feel it! This week we went to Sedge Meadow/Des Plaines River Trail and Illinois Beach / Camp Logan.

Top: compass flower, snakeroot, false Solomon's Seal (b.erries). Center: goldenrod, fungi, riverbank grapes. Bottom: white heath aster and skyblue aster, New England aster, butterfly weed (can you see how the spent stems make a whorl?).

Isn't this the coolest souvenir tablecloth ever??? I got it for $3 at a church rummage sale.  The midcentury graphics are terrific!

The other block......... from Exuberant Color

Yesterday I mentioned the other block that can be made with the Weathervane die.  I decided to cut pieces and make that block too so I wouldn't forget about it.  Using these 2 blocks alternating would make a nice quilt so I may explore that later.

I didn't have any project ready to sew last night and 3 hours of  TV programs (2 were season finale) so I picked another mindless sewing project.  I have seen these blocks on 3 blogs and thought they would be great for using up my box of 1.5" strips that I ...

Weathervane........... from Exuberant Color

I made a test block from the Weathervane die last night.  It seems so petite at 8" after using 2 dies that were 12" earlier this week.

I cut some batik scraps for this one.  It went together very nicely so I like the die.

Weathervane was one of my favorite blocks from my sampler quilt class that I gave many times in the 1970s and early 1980s, in a time period before people had access to rotary cutters (or die cutters).

You can use this die to make a floating star pattern too by turning the center pieces on ...

Getting ready to quilt............. from Exuberant Color

I finally got my table cleaned off so I could cut some batting for this quilt.  I pressed the flannel backing and loaded it and then put the batting on.  The top is just laying loose on top of the other 2 layers.  I'm getting closer to a finish.

Behind me as I stand at the longarm is this double design wall with the improv blocks.  I have added about 6 blocks since the last photo.  I still have to make some more blocks so this will stay here for awhile.

I just needed some mindless sewing last night ...

Am I Blue from Becca's Crazy Projects

I've been working on this quilt for a long time. This past weekend I finally attached the binding.
I accordion fold my binding to keep it from getting twisted while I work with it. I know there are loads of tricks people use when winding their binding but this has always worked for me.
Many years ago I switched from attaching binding by machine and finishing by hand to machine-finished binding. You can check out my binding tips and tricks. I work with 2.5" binding. This results in a wider finished binding (3/8") that I would get ...
