Joyce Wieland and Art with Fabric from Quilting & Learning

Reason & Passion - based on
Joyce Wieland's Reason Over Passion (1968)
Welcome to Art with Fabric - Spring 2017! I'm thrilled to be participating in this blog hop again - thanks Alida for organizing it! It's so much fun finding an artist's work to use as inspiration. I had to find one that I liked since I spent about 4 months thinking and working on this piece.

The piece I've chosen to interpret is Joyce Wieland's Reason over Passion, created in 1968. Joyce Wieland (1930 - 1998) was an amazing woman. I was introduced to her art by ...

Art with Fabric Preview from Quilting & Learning

The Art with Fabric blog hop is almost upon us....and I actually finished my piece on time! We need to send an image of our work one week before our post date to Alida of Tweety Loves Quilting blog so that she can get the  blog hop ready. The picture I sent her didn't include any embellishments, but it's still very recognizable.

Our theme this time is Women. I had been planning this project since the fall blog hop - but the theme changed all of my plans. I could have ignored the theme, and I probably would ...

March Finishes from Quilting & Learning

Celebrate – Fêtons 150
What a month! It started with the second Celebrate – Fêtons 150 link-up and the draw of the first prize among those who left comments. Three Canada 150 fat quarters were sent to Susan from Quilt Fabrication.

The link-up has been a success!! There were eleven link-ups – and only one of them was my own :-) This month I also had my own celebration – 5 years of blogging and 150 posts! Thank you to everyone who participated in the link-ups, left comments and best wishes for my own anniversary. What an amazing online community.

I had two goals for ...

Art with Fabric - Stained-glass window from Quilting & Learning

Art with Fabric blog hop
Welcome to the Art with Fabric blog hop. My art quilt is based on the stained-glass windows of Gaudì's Sagrada Familia church in Barcelona, Spain.

The windows within the Sagrada Familia are a beautiful progression of colours from blue, green and yellow, to orange, red and purple. My piece is a depiction of the colours found in these windows.

Stained-glass windows
of the Sagrada Familia

The stained-glass windows were created by Joan Vila-Grau based on architect Antoni Gaudi's plans. The shapes of the glass pieces are a mixture of curves and lines. Since ...

Blog hop almost here from Quilting & Learning

Art with Fabric blog hop button
Art with Fabric blog hop
It's almost that time already! Fibre artists from around the globe will show their creations based on art, architecture, books or music. If last spring was an indicator, it's going to be awesome. What a treat to see everyone's creations.

The Art with Fabric bog hop is almost here - and I'm sort of, almost ready. I will definitely have something to post, it just might not be the absolute final version. There are ways of creating an art piece that will be presentable but that will then have a second section ...

Comet I | Art with Fabric Blog Hop from Georgia Girl Quilts

Hello & welcome to my stop on the Art with Fabric blog hop, hosted by Alida from Tweety Loves Quilting. I had so much fun last time, I decided to participate once again!

This time around I chose Comet I; by Sam Gilliam, a Color Field Painter born in Tupelo, MS. You can learn more about Mr. Gilliam here.

For my quilt, I opted to use only the diamond, or rhombus, shape of Sam Gilliam's comet and omit the tails. I wish I could tell you I have some great artistic reasoning; but the truth is that I just didn ...

To-Do Tuesday | 10.11.16 from Georgia Girl Quilts

Last week I able to get most of my list completed. I photographed and posted about Toil & Trouble, the Halloween quilt I made for my step-mom. I was also able to get photographs of the quilt I gave to my sister for her 40th birthday. I'll share more on that one in a TGIFF post this week. In addition, I added a sleeve and label to Hexie Rebllion and sent her off into the wild. She should be arriving in CA today or tomorrow.

This is the back of the quilt I made for my sister. I kind ...

Finally over the procrastination and planning from Quilting & Learning

My favourite quilting retreat space
Life is good! I spent the first evening of my quilting retreat, starting this post while sipping a gin and tonic, and enjoying the rewards of a day spent working on my Art with Fabric piece.

In last week's post, I was procrastinating by planning my project. Although it was procrastination, it was well worth it. I was able to figure out roughly how to tackle this project.

I received all of the fabrics that I ordered. Look at these beautiful colours! If you want to enhance your stash ...

Art with Fabric Blog Hop Coming from Quilting & Learning

Art with Fabric blog hop
Have you ever had an amazing idea for a project that scares the hell out of you? I know that this is a good thing, because it means that I’m stretching myself as an artist, but it’s still painful to go through.

To minimize the anxiety (and justify the procrastination), I’ve done a few things:
  • I did my homework so that I’m comfortable with the subject matter;
  • I’ve drawn several drafts with various amounts of detail;
  • I’ve gone through my fabric and purchased lots more;
  • I’ve written out ...
