Taking Some Time Off! from Quilty Folk

I've been puttering around, sewing the wedges together from a project that got cut too small. It just seems like a waste to have it sit in the orphan totes forever. The plan is to hand applique these wheels to a background block and then figure out a center circle fabric. Perhaps blue? Some of the Dresdens are a little bit wonky, but I'm crossing my fingers the hand work will ease it out.

The new applique project
In other news, my mother got this lovely quilt in the mail a couple weeks ago. One of my cousins ...

Little Houses...Table Runner from May Your Bobbin Always Be Full

I met with my local quilt group

The Harlan Valley Quilters

We meet every Monday @ The Quilt Palace

I found this layer cake in a thrift store last year

and decided it was time to play with it...

I fused the fabrics and cut them into

house shapes and pressed them

onto a white background fabric...

Then I did a little free motion

scribble stitching

always a favorite of mine !

I used black thread to help define

the house shapes...

Then I cut squares from the leftover fabrics

and pieced them into borders...

First two borders stitched and pressed...

All ...

July OMG Finish from Quilt Paint Create

My July OMG was to finish the challenge quilt, which I eventually named Wallflower. The challenge was to use a quilt made by another member of the group as inspiration. I chose the background fabric from the inspiration quilt as the basis for my quilt.

Here is my quilt.

The larger motifs are made from pellon non-fusible interfacing. The smaller motifs are lace cut from a vintage tablecloth that had large enough holes to make it unusable. I painted both with fabric paint, inks and airbrush paint.

In hindsight, I would have done some things differently, but I’m happy ...

Summertime Happenings from Quilty Folk

Towards the end of June, we left on a 12 day trip. Before leaving, there was {of course} a mad rush to get the quilting sorted out so it would be easier to dive back in later. You know how us quilters think!

Ready to the last little bit of handwork!
The funny thing was, I totally forgot about some of the prep work that had happened and so had to spend some time spinning my wheels anyway. These two little baby quilts had all the hand quilting finished up and just needed some binding attached. Thankfully I found the ...

half gone or half full . . . from Count it *all* JOY!

Rabbit, rabbit!  It's hard to believe it's July 1st and we're halfway through the year already!

June was busy, but good.  We got the very good news that the PET scan images were good, so Todd was cleared for surgery.  That will happen on July 5th ... in four days.  It's a major surgery.  They'll remove the right lobe of his liver, his gallbladder, and ablate any mets they find on the left lobe.  They think there might be one, but they've never been able to get a good look at it, so that's ...

Preserving the Old from Heart Desire Creations

Recently, my sister-in-law showed me a tin full of blocks that her grandmother had sewn many years ago. The pieces were all cut with scissors and either pieced by hand or by machine. The pattern pieces were from a newspaper. My sister-in-law had no clue what to do with them all and for years had been holding on to them. And then – you probably guessed it – I offered to do something with them. Little did I know what I was getting myself into! None of the blocks laid flat.

The sizes of the pieces varied. I knew there was no ...

Rainbow Neighbourhood QAL, Feelings, Monarch Applique from Canadian Needle Nana

Mr. and Mrs. American Goldfinch...I hope they are discussing housing options here at the wooden house. I love to watch them.

Here is a red house for the Rainbow Neighbourhood QAL with my paper pieced star block.
They are being stitched faster but I'm not sure any better. I am planning a lighter colour for the next one perhaps in peaches or summery kinds of shades.

With my Rainbow Neighbourhood project nearing an end, I'm thinking about an applique project next. Maybe this one, Monarch, from Laundry Basket Quilts. I've had this pattern for years and ...

My Coaster Tutorial from Quilt in Progress

I think everyone who makes a coaster has her/his own way of doing it. I have decided on this method because for me it’s a bit faster and a little more fun in the fabric choice.

I made a set of 4 coasters for my sister, different fabrics, but all with the same applique. Here it is broken down into steps.

  • Cut a central fabric 4×4 inches. I used white.
  • Cut cotton batting and a backing fabric 4 3/4 x 4 3/4 inches. My backings match either the border or the applique.
  • Trace your applique ...

BOM - Month 5 on Off the Wall Friday from Creations - Quilts, Art, Whatever by Nina-Marie Sayre

Helen's EQ8 mock-up
Under the wire, I finished up May's section of the Quilt Show's Block of the Month quilt.  I won't lie, it was a struggle.  This month's section was the flying geese that surround the elaborate medallion center.  I spent a good 10 days hmmmmming.....hawwwwwwing on exactly how I was going to handle the color placement of the geese.  When I spoke up about these concerns on the quilts forum, Helen W used her EQ8 to come up with a quick mock-up (Cool right?).  Several quilters were going with solid flying ...

Applique, Music, Free Patterns, Rainbow Neighbourhood from Canadian Needle Nana

The sun came out and dried up all the rain...yes that happened last Friday. Glorious sunshine almost every day since. Temps are a bit cool and there are frost warnings at night. It is shivery still in the shade, but the sunshine makes up for it. Daffodils are blooming and the tiny leaves are appearing on trees. Several of the indoor plants are budding. I'm itching to get these outside.

I began stitching this applique block during the Coronation. I thought it a little tiara like. A dresden block for my next Rainbow house, a pink one.
I ...
