Border Beauties 51, 52 from Virtual Quilter

I like the first … the distortion of using block designs in odd shaped spaces in borders makes for very interesting borders.

I like the borders in the second design too, but was intrigued with the result of using a square applique block in the sashing, and exactly the same block in the sashing squares, but with different colouring.

Distortion again!

Thank goodness Electric Quilt will print out blocks as they are in a quilt design, not in the original shape as designed.

Patch Play 29, 30 from Virtual Quilter

Simple background layout works nicely as a frame for the applique blocks.

In the second design the applique does all of the framing … and that works too.

Maria’s Medallion 3, 4 from Virtual Quilter

Very dainty florals … and I like them.

I love flipping and turning block designs to see what happens, and most of the time I love the results, including the two designs above.

Brandis Street Blocks 9, 10 from Virtual Quilter

Yesterday’s designs were inspired by an old spoon, today’s designs were inspired by a scrap of old lino. My only excuse is that I like old stuff!

I love the second one!

Felicity Anderson Quilts 37, 38 from Virtual Quilter

Oh dear … I quite like the design, but the thought of making all those not quite identical blocks means I will never make this one up as a real quilt. I don’t mind making repeat blocks, but not so many so similar!

Like the second one too, but should have made the quilting lines in the final border an extension of the lines around the centre block.

Gums, Wattles and Waratahs 1, 2, 3 from Virtual Quilter

Started playing with Aussie flora designs a couple of years ago, then lost them … and found them yesterday after my early morning session playing with Desert Pea designs. There are three project files, with just a few designs in each one, and I will share them today and tomorrow.

The sizes of native Australian flowers varies from small to big, and in the design above the yellow balls of the wattles are usually half an inch or smaller, while the banksias are at least fist size, so these designs do not show them in scale.

The corner blocks in the ...

Desert Flora 1, 2 from Virtual Quilter

In the early hours of this morning I woke up, and after an hour just lying around, then decided to get up and do something quiet. for the best part of two hours I sat at the computer playing with a floral cross featuring Sturt Desert Peas.

With just the basic cross design as my starting point, I designed several block variations, and then some quilts. I usually work with designs for square quilts, but at about 3am I chose a rectangular design, more suited to a single bed.

I decided that I needed a few more block variations and ...

A Whiter Shade of Pale 29, 30 from Virtual Quilter

Love the idea of a very low contrast quilt like these, but I don’t think I want to live with one.

At least that saves me the task of picking out one design to make!

White On Colour 15, 16 from Virtual Quilter

I love the design, but would not enjoy making sixteen identical urns, plus the big one!

I think it would be difficult to find the perfect background colour, but would probably want to change it after the first dozen blocks.

As much as I love the designs I would be bored stiff making the them, but would be happy to hand quilt them!

Now there’s a solution … add fusible to the applique designs, cut them out with the Scan’n’Cut, iron them onto background, put the top together, and use the quilting to secure the applique!

Beads Again 9, 10 from Virtual Quilter

Interesting, but think the blocks in the middle would look better surrounding the fan blocks around them.

Love the second design as it is!

Not my colours, not my style, but I love it!

Still not y colours, more my style, but still love the first one more than this.

White on White Gold 21, 22 from Virtual Quilter

These designs would be nice on a quilt cover, but would be much better as a quilt with some interesting quilting.

Love the second design!

Beaded Blocks and Borders Batik 33, 34 from Virtual Quilter

Simply repeat blocks … not often I share a design with just one block, but I love the simplicity of this design.

The second design for today is more like my usual offerings, but I prefer the first one.

Brandis Street Blocks 5, 6 from Virtual Quilter

I like it. These designs use similar colours to the 1970s floor covering the block designs are based on, just after the 60s orange started to become unfashionable.

I love the second one, but am not happy with the way the quilting looks here. Perhaps my virtual thread is too thick, or the design has too much detail.

Before Pompeii 13, 14 from Virtual Quilter

This series started with some ideas about changing Double Wedding Ring blocks, and moved on until there were no Wedding Rings in sight.

I like the first …

… and love the second.

Just a bit of playing with blocks has improved the centre to my liking.

Autumn Patches OP 15, 16 from Virtual Quilter

In my part of the world our autumn weather is variable this year, from cool summer to cold winter … but it is very dry, which means it is very dusty, so the colours in this project file are appropriate.

I love the first design, but if I wanted to make it in real life I would much prefer spring colours.

I like the second design too.

Very pretty! Would make an ordinary room rather romantic.

Ditto my comments about the first one.

I think I like the border on the first one, and the centre of the second one best.

A Whiter Shade on Gold Quilted 17, 18 from Virtual Quilter

The hardest part of making a quilt with applique designs ‘whited out’ would be choosing the background colour, then finding a collection of fabrics for the very low contrast in the appliques.

My favourite of these two is the second!

Kelly’s Custom Quilts 17 from Virtual Quilter

The designs today are each based on two different pieced block designs made up of squares and rectangles.

I like the second one best … though after another coffee I may change my mind.
