Catching up.............. from Exuberant Color

I'm getting a slow start to my projects in this new year. I had to do some catch-up, grocery shopping and laundry.

I'm looking for the dies that will cut some of the pieces of the Plaid-ish quilt. One of them is a 5" square. I'll get some fabrics pressed today and start cutting. Some of the shapes will have to be rotary cut. My right shoulder has been bothering me so I won't be doing a lot of cutting any one day.

I did some reorganizing of computer folders too and I enjoy doing that ...

Cutting................ from Exuberant Color

I need to start cleaning up the floral fabrics on my table in the basement. One (or two) other quilts need to be cut so I started with the 6.5" squares. There are duplicates of some of these so there are 42 squares cut so far.

I also got the fabrics I showed yesterday cut into quarter square triangles. I have to move all of the triangles off my sewing cabinet so I can sew again.

Triangles......................... from Exuberant Color

Starting with the end of the day yesterday, last night I sewed 60 triangle squares, 12 each of 5 combinations. The first group sewn last week have been pressed so I can start making the pinwheel blocks with them.

This is the same pile flipped over. Whenever I feel like turning on the iron I will press these for more pinwheels.

Also last night I finished the dishcloth currently on the needles. I used 3 small leftover pieces of yarn and then finished with a partial ball of yarn which has now created one more small leftover.

Finish #4 for August 2024 from Exuberant Color

This quilt is tricky to photograph. If I use auto adjust in my editing program, it gives the pinks a blue cast so I didn't use it.

I don't feel the necessity to name every quilt but I have to have something to call it when I refer to it. This one has just been Hearts and 4 Patches so far. It has Hobbs 80/20 batting in it and it is 59" x 76".

A variety of things.............. from Exuberant Color

I sewed a few samples of the other block on the die I showed recently. It is similar to the Fractured series of quilts I made several years ago. There is a Label for Fractured in the label list on my right sidebar. The difference being the angle is the same on every block with the die and the angles varied with the 2 methods I used on the other quilts.

I emptied another project box. I think these are the leftovers from this quilt top. I'm pretty sure I have another location where I have 1.5" strips ...

Binding started..................... from Exuberant Color

Yesterday felt like a binding day so I sewed the strips together and got it sewn onto the quilt. I have hand stitched one long side and half of a short side so far. I'm sure a print wouldn't have been the choice of a lot of people but it just felt right to me. Click on the photo for a closer look at how it is looking with both front and back of the quilt.

Sorting................. from Exuberant Color

I did a lot of sorting of batik scraps yesterday. I pulled everything large enough to cut a 6.5" square for a friend's quilt and then sorted smaller pieces to cover both areas on this die. That left a pile of mostly strips up to 3.5" wide. They will go into a bag for a future destash sale.

I have this same die for 12" blocks so I can make both 12" and 6" blocks for the same quilt. I have one more box of batik scraps to go through today.

Trimming............. from Exuberant Color

I got 2 quilts back from my longarm quilter and they are 2 favorite quilts. I got this one trimmed so it is ready for me to choose binding. It is all batik fabric so it will be a batik binding and will be hand finished.

There are lots of colors in this quilt so almost any binding color will work.

The back is a batik too. I think I will look for a medium value for the binding since there is a light end and a dark end to the layout of the blocks.

First 2 finishes for December 2023............ from Exuberant Color

Flannel log baby quilt is 38" square after finishing. Hobbs 80/20 batting.

Backing and binding are Moda brushed fabric which is like flannel but more like the weight of regular quilting fabric.

Flannel 4" tumblers baby quilt is 39.5" square after finishing. I cut the tumblers with my die cutter while cleaning up from making another flannel quilt last year. It made for a fast quilt with pieces ready to use. Hobbs 80/20 batting.

The backing and binding are the same as on the log quilt pictured above.

Cutting little squares............ from Exuberant Color

Yesterday morning my granddaughter and my youngest great-grandson came over to see me. He is 14 months old and such a happy baby.

After lunch I drove to the next town north of me to see my grandson's house. He is a first time home owner and just signed the papers yesterday. I got the grand tour of the house and the big yard and extra garage.

6 more blocks plus test block................ from Exuberant Color

Yesterday afternoon I decided to cut a test block with my Schoolhouse die. This was a test for the one way design (beige print) to check how it would look with one piece turned the other direction. Also I'm checking if I like 2 colors or might like 3 or 4 colors better, sky one color, windows another color and light pieces in the building another color. Maybe even a different color roof and/or chimneys. It will take a lot of planning to cut the pieces of fabric to place on the die.

It was a dark and gloomy day........... from Exuberant Color

It rained all day yesterday and we only had a little ice around noon and then it warmed a couple degrees and only rain after that. It was so gloomy the only thing to do was turn on my bright lights in the basement and do some cutting. I cut this rectangular shape and squares out of light fabrics.

Then I cut more triangles in both dark and light. I need 16 triangle squares per block so that is 320.

Both tops are sewn....................... from Exuberant Color

Both quilt tops are sewn but not pressed yet. I'll get them up on the design wall in the basement today and take their photos. I'll have to hang them sideways and then rotate the photos because one is 78" long and the other is 84" long. The design wall is about 83-84" tall and 96" wide. My longarm is in the way to get a good photo when I hang them the other way when they are that long.

More pink............. from Exuberant Color

I was looking for pink fabrics that I haven't used yet and spied the pink paper fans by Kaffe. The stripey print I used with it is one I passed over in the original search for fabrics but I'm getting desperate now for some new combinations to add to the mix. The strips at the right are for 4 patches. The 2 on the left have been used in blocks already. I should have enough for the remaining 4 patches when I get these sewn.

Progress on 9 blocks from Exuberant Color

I die cut 9 blocks with my Snail's Trail die yesterday and got 3 totally sewn and the centers of the other 6 sewn. I still need to cut 2 more blocks and they will be the darker blue. Another day or 2 and I'll have them all up on a design wall.

Working on 2............ from Exuberant Color

There was a plumber working at my house yesterday so I kept busy cutting while he was there. I got 9 Snail's Trail blocks die cut and then sewed them last night. I was able to find the top rosy color fabric for $6.99 last week and I didn't have any of it. I made 6 of the new blocks with that fabric. I had 15 blocks sewn previously so I'm up to 24 blocks now. I think I need at least 35 so I'll continue cutting.

Cutting and hand stitching............ from Exuberant Color

The next 4 heart blocks are cut and waiting to be sewn. There is that Martha Negley tree rings again, this time in pink.

All of my stitching time was spent on the hand finished binding. I have rounded 3 corners now and am about 15" down the last side. I should be able to finish it tonight. Maybe I can get some stitching done on the baby quilt too.

Blocks and binding.......... from Exuberant Color

I sewed 4 more heart blocks. I just need another 4 for an 80 block total. The quilt will still be only 48" x 60" so I'm still trying to decide if it needs to be larger. I could add some pink 4 patch blocks here and there and increase it to 54" x 66". I am cutting these blocks with an Accuquilt GO die.

I also sewed 3 more Snail's Trail blocks. This makes a total of 15. I think I need I need at least 35 blocks for a quilt 60" x 84". I'll cut ...

Pink hearts................ from Exuberant Color

I'm continuing with the heart blocks I started last month and I'm up to 44 now and there are some ready to be cut that I will sew tonight. The blocks are 6" so right now (with 4 blocks to be added) it is only 36" x 48". If I make12 more blocks it would be 42" x 48". Or I could add a border (and only add 4 more blocks). So many decisions/choices.

5th quilt top for January........... from Exuberant Color

I took out the darker block in the center in the photo yesterday and put in the lighter block. I wanted to keep this mostly pastel. It is 40.5" square and I'll choose a backing today. I have a piece of batting that will work with just a little trimming.

I cut one more combination of pink for the heart quilt and made the 4 blocks.
