Flannel scraps.............. from Exuberant Color

When cutting the 9" tumbler shapes with my Studio die cutter I have left and right leftover pieces.  It is considered wasteful by most people who don't have a die cutter.

However it is only wasteful if you don't use them.  I decided there will be a few tumbler shapes cut from the crazy pieced blocks made from those pieces.

I made 4 of them while watching TV last night.  There are enough pieces to make 4 more blocks but I'm going to press these and cut them to see if I need to assemble them any ...

A new die............ from Exuberant Color

I got the new 8" Snails Trail die.  It's perfect for using the layer cakes (10" squares) and I can cut 3 blocks with one pass through the cutter.

There are several layouts as well as using an alternating plain block for every other block.  I have a couple more new dies I haven't used yet so I'm hoping to make some more trial blocks.  If I make them in the right color group I can use them in the Kaffe orphan block quilt I had started designing a few months ago.

A little progress on 2.......... from Exuberant Color

I sewed the second section of this older project.  It is still in 2 pieces.  I need to sew a duplicate of both to be turned upside down and put above these.  Then all of the rest of the pieces will be added to the sides to make it wider.  Right now it is 32" square.

I die cut more pieces for the Bear Paw blocks.  Now I need to concentrate on cutting the triangles so I will have more variety to work with.

I changed thread on my machine to match the binding for the colorwash so I'll ...

Lazy day...... from Exuberant Color

I just couldn't get going on anything yesterday.  I really can't tell you what I did.  Last night I sewed one block with the other pieces that are on the same die as the top blocks.  One of the ideas on the sheet that came with the die was to use the 2 together so I laid out a half block to the left of the whole pinwheel.

This morning I need to prepare the last 9 packages from the pop-up shop sales and deliver them to the post office.  Then my plan is to figure out which ...

Table 3 cleaned off............... from Exuberant Color

Next up for clean off was my die cutter table.  Here is is folded up so I could wipe off the table top.

Now it is ready for action again.  All that is left to do in this area is vacuuming the floor.

I plan to cut up the chunks of Kaffe collective fabrics into my 2", 3", and 4" quarter square and half square triangles and squares and put them in the appropriate boxes.  I might not make it to the bottom of the box but maybe I'll set a time limit instead of 1 1/2 hours ...

A relaxation day............... from Exuberant Color

It was another hot, hot day so it was time to relax. Last night I sewed a few of the 16 patch strips into their group of 4.

I had strips ironed and stacked ready to cut 6 stars with my die cutter a couple weeks ago.  I decided yesterday was the day to cut them and I sewed the first one.

Today is the big day, the pop-up shop opens at noon to everyone on my email list.  You will be getting an email at 12 noon EDT with a password and link to get into the shop.  If ...

Economy blocks................ from Exuberant Color

I just didn't feel like turning on the iron so I could continue on my star quilt so I started something new.  A week or so ago I showed the pieces I was die cutting for 12" Economy quilt blocks.  Last night I went through the quarter square triangles and found all of the sets of 4 alike.  There were 28 so I took out the stack of 6.5" squares to pair with them.

I pulled squares of all different fabrics than those in the quarter square triangles.

Next I paired the triangles with the squares.  Now it ...

All of the Half Hexie tops and finished quilts.................... from Exuberant Color

I didn't have anything cut ready to sew yesterday so I decided to make a collage of the 4 die cut half hexagon quilts and tops that I have made.

The plaid quilt top on the left was sewn together in April 2018.  It was longer than my design wall and is partially laying on the floor.  I sold it to a friend.

The next in line is the one I just finished sewing Tuesday this week.

The 3rd from the left is a finished quilt made with African fabrics.  It is my favorite although I really like all ...

Quilt top finished............. from Exuberant Color

I started out the day yesterday cleaning off a table top and made good headway after 3 hours of moving things where they belong.

Last night I sewed the last seam in the half hexagon quilt top.

I cut the pieces for this quilt with my die cutter sometime in late 2019 or early 2020.

I need to do the staystitching around the perimeter now so no seams will pop.  Maybe I can get a better photo then with some lighting on the bottom half.

I think we had our last frost warning last night into this early morning so ...

Almost done............... from Exuberant Color

Both halves of the die cut half hexagon quilt are done but I didn't want to go down to the ironing table at 10:30 last night.  I hope to get the 2 halves pressed, last seam sewn and pressed and points trimmed off the top and bottom today.  I will look for a backing fabric right away but it won't get quilted right away.

I finished cutting one batch of Kaffe scraps in 3" and 4" sizes.  I will keep all of the shapes in the same box to make it easier to find them all when ...

Making progress.............. from Exuberant Color

I got some more columns sewn on the die cut half hexagon quilt and I think I will attach the last 6 columns together and then I will have 2 halves to take to the ironing board and one last seam to sew and press.  I had pinned and taken down one column before I took this photo.

The Jack-in-the-Pulpits are getting taller and there are lots more of them this past week.

The Weigela bush is getting ready to bloom.  The other 2 colors bloom a little later.

I went to the local nursery and got all of my ...

2 columns........... from Exuberant Color

The only sewing I got done yesterday was to sew 2 long columns together.

I spent more time outside planting things I had dug on Thursday and Friday.

One of the plants was being moved from the front garden which is going to be dug up and redone.  It is the Husker Red Penstemon (Beardtongue).  It came out of the ground in pieces instead of one clump.  This is 2 pieces planted together.

Here are 2 larger pieces of the plant together in one spot.  I haven't had a lot of luck with the plant coming back the second ...

Half sewn................ from Exuberant Color

I started out the day yesterday digging plants and dividing them for a friend.  Then I pulled all of the weeds out of the raised bed in the backyard.  I finished by mowing the front yard.

Then I started sewing columns on the die cut half hexagon quilt and am halfway done.

After I took that photo I took down the next 2 columns safely overlapped and pinned and started sewing the seams.

Designing done.............. from Exuberant Color

I had to take the photo from an angle because my sewing cabinet blocked a full view from straight on.  I finished all of the designing of this die cut half hexagon quilt top.  I had more dark pieces than light ones so the left and right edge have more dark pieces in them.  After I took this photo I sewed  the pieces of 2 columns and sewed the columns together.  I overlap each piece by 1" and pin them together in columns to go to the machine.  It took over a half hour to sew that little bit and ...

Half hexies............. from Exuberant Color

I die cut these half hexagons some time in 2019 or early 2020.  I decided it was time to get them out and design the quilt.  I need to add more pieces at the bottom of these columns and 6 more rows across.  I will add the bottom pieces last because they will be laying on the floor and I don't want to trip on them.  I'm going to count the pieces that are left and see if I need to cut any more before I finish the designing.

I have made 2 other half hexagon quilts the ...

Making test blocks............. from Exuberant Color

I mentioned a couple weeks ago I had some new dies that I hadn't used yet and needed to make test blocks.  The first one is three fabrics and took some concentration to make.

The second block is one background and four colors.

Then I tried 2 backgrounds and 4 fabrics for the star.  I think it would look better with 4 backgrounds than it looks with 2 background fabrics.

Today I think I will dig out this yellow edged Hosta and move it to a different spot where I can see it better.

I mowed my backyard yesterday ...

Testing another design.................. from Exuberant Color

While I was in the basement looking for more fabrics for my colorwash I ran across the chisel shapes I cut with my die cutter from Marcia Derse fabric.  One light fabric is a MD and 2 are Grunge and one is a batik.  The light shapes out at the edges are the starts of more stars when the blocks are put together.  I only have enough pieces cut and sewn for five 18" blocks.  I wanted to try it out to see if I want to make a bigger quilt with this block.

New die arrived.......... from Exuberant Color

I had to try out the new half rectangle die and make sure it worked properly.  If you cut all of your fabrics face up you get the  ones on the left.  If you cut all fabrics face down you get the ones on the right.

Some patterns will use the rectangles cut both ways and some need them all alike.  On the left, all alike, the other 2 samples cut both ways, fabrics face up and face down on the die.

These are cut both ways.  You have to know what your pattern will be before you know which ...

Who is right?........... from Exuberant Color

If you have been reading my blog for a long time you might remember in 2011 I bought the Accuquilt Studio die cutter.  Here is the blog post where I showed it and talked about it.

I have purchased many dies over the 9 1/2 years I have owned it and I USE them all the time.

When visiting a friend's quilt shop I purchased this half rectangle die.  It is a GO die which I can cut on my Studio cutter using an adaptor under the dies.

Like I do with all of my GO dies I ...

I had to make 2 more.................. from Exuberant Color

After making the first 2 blocks with the mottled batik fabric in the X position I thought maybe this might be a good quilt to use a wide variety of mottled batik fabrics.  I have a 15" high pile of mottled batiks in many different colors.  They have been sitting on one of my cutting tables for many months while I tried to decide how to use them.  I have several white with gray prints to use as the light fabric and many black background with gray batiks for the diamonds. (Block is Hattie's Choice cut with a GO ...
