You have questions............ from Exuberant Color

There were questions yesterday about cutting for the dies.  This die will cut 6 layers at a time so I have 6 different fabrics in a stack.  If you are making a 2 color quilt, all 6 pieces would be the same fabric.  The insert in the die package tells me how big to cut the pieces.
Here I have put the stack on top of the section that needs to be cut with dark fabrics.

(Under the die are some of the light fabric yardage I have pulled for cutting.)

Then I look back at the package insert and ...

A new cutting die.............. from Exuberant Color

I like to take advantage of sales and especially on free shipping so I got a new cutting die.  This is a block I don't enjoy making by other methods but I love the block.  I made a sample last night.  That is my bin of good size batik scraps and I do my pressing and preparing a little at a time.
This is the other optional coloration.   I haven't decided if they will be both light and dark blocks as shown on the package insert or like this sample.  I can see this project being a fill ...

More baking and cutting........... from Exuberant Color

Yesterday I made Kringlas and shortbread cookies.  Today I will make frosted creams, the family favorite dessert.  That will be the end of the baking and then it is party time.

I am continuing to cut scraps into 2.5" and 2" squares with just little bits left to put in the dog bed stuffing bag.  I am cutting some Brandon and Philip fabrics now to add to the Kaffe squares for another colorwash quilt.

More cutting............ from Exuberant Color

I finished cutting all of the 3.5" squares and then concentrated on the 2" squares from the leftover piece.  At the top left is a pile that needs the fold mark pressed out before I can cut them.  The tiny trimmings will go in the dog bed stuffing bag.

We got a little snow overnight Saturday night but it melted off the streets within a couple hours.  We have lucked out with just an inch again where south of us had many inches of snow.  It is cold though but warming up for Thanksgiving, back to normal temperatures in ...

A day of cutting........... from Exuberant Color

I have some large scraps left from cutting kits of 6" squares of batiks.  The pile on the right is waiting to be cut.  Top left is 3.5" squares, below that is a pile of 2" squares and bottom left is the pile waiting to be cut into 2" squares.

I just checked the birthday post that my daughter wrote and there are 262 happy birthday wishes on it.  Thank you all so much!  It made this birthday so special.

Many thanks, and a quilt top..................... from Exuberant Color

My daughter really surprised me with the second post yesterday and I was blown away by the number of birthday wishes.  Thanks so much to all of you who took a moment to comment and wish me a happy birthday.  I loved all of your comments and am so happy so many people love my blog.

I found a few minutes to sew in the afternoon between lunch out with family and pizza brought to my house last night.  The top is finished and now I see 2 of the same fabric just one half hexagon apart but it is ...

All of the rest of the rows........... from Exuberant Color

I sewed for three hours last night and got all of the rows assembled but didn't get the last two sewn onto the rest of them.  One more day and I should be able to take a photo of the whole top.  After I finish sewing I need to press it and trim the points off the top and bottom and then staystitch around the perimeter of it.

Designing done, sewing started......... from Exuberant Color

I cut lots more half hexagons from my African fabrics with my die cutter and finished designing it late yesterday afternoon.  This quilt is just a joyous riot of colors with all of the different fabrics.  I think I cut about 15 more fabrics (several pieces of each) so there are about 74 different fabrics.

This is the small amount of pieces leftover.

The 6 columns on the left are sewn together.  I stacked the rest of the rows after I took this photo and pinned them back on the wall in order.

Cutting........... from Exuberant Color

While my granddaughter worked on her sewing project I pressed and cut half hexagons from my African fabric stash.  There are 65 different prints cut so far and a total of 159 pieces.

My design wall isn't tall enough so the last 2 pieces in each column are pinned to the last piece on the wall.  I need to cut 49 more pieces and they need to be dark and light.  I have plenty of medium value prints already cut.

Clean up time........... from Exuberant Color

I had so many piles around my Accuquilt Studio cutter that it had to be clean up day yesterday.  The Marcia Derse scraps were cut into 2" x 3.5" rectangles and 2" squares with a small pile left over that were too narrow to cut.  About 5 cranks through with my GO adapter and dies and I have 54 rectangles and 21 squares for the ends of rows.
The geraniums had the last few blooms after all of the rain we have had.  Frost and freeze warnings for our county were on the weather report.

I'm sure I ...

Need to organize........... from Exuberant Color

I really should organize this pile of African fabrics.  I was thinking that the large prints in them might work well in a half hexagon quilt.  The die is 9" long.  I like to always have a cutting project going while I'm working on something else.

When I was in the backyard yesterday I was reminded I need to dig up this Pulmonaria/Lungwort that has hopped out of the garden and into the grass.  There is another smaller one about 3 feet from this one.

Another shape that can be cut from the 6" squares offered in the ...

The die I used for the X part......... from Exuberant Color

On the left is the X block piece and on the right is the original signature piece from a Studio die.  I actually got a quote from Accuquilt for making the die for the piece on the left in 2 sizes.  It was a little more than I expected and I couldn't order it at the time but I told them they should consider making it in several sizes because it was a wanted shape for many blocks including the Kansas Dugout block.

Fast forward to their new product a couple years ago.  The QUBE came in 4 blocks ...

Cutting again........ from Exuberant Color

I had company in my studio yesterday so I worked on several things.  I made a couple more blocks for my batik Hunter Star and then cut up the remainder of the strips leftover from the neutral bricks cutting.  They are 3" finished size.

I was going through a stack of fabric and pulled out a couple pieces that I just love.  I need to cut into this one.

I like this one too.  The mottled batiks are so pretty but it is hard to figure out how to use them.

86 more pieces.............. from Exuberant Color

Two friends who I hadn't seen since November came over to sew yesterday.  While they worked on their projects I worked on the final cutting of the half hexagons with my GO die on the Studio die cutter.  I cut 32 fabrics into 86 more pieces so now I have a total of 321 pieces.  If my calculations are right I could make a quilt 81" x 104" with them.  That means I couldn't fit all of the pieces on a double design wall.  I think I will separate out one piece of each fabric, design that section ...

Glorious sunshine............. from Exuberant Color

I cut 61 more half hexagons with my GO die on the Studio die cutter yesterday.  When I brought them upstairs to lay them with the others the sun was shining through the west windows.  It almost felt like spring yesterday but this is northern IL and I'm sure we will see a little more winter.  I have more fabrics pressed ready to cut today.
Isn't this a beautiful batik?  I had to have a half yard of it.  I have no idea what I will do with it other than smile every time I look at it.

Sorting and cutting............ from Exuberant Color

As I was looking through the huge blanket box for plaid scraps mixed in with yardage I decided to cut another quilt.  I think the half hexagons cut with my GO die on my Studio cutter is the way to go.  I have only cut 78 so far and I need over 200 so this will be an ongoing project.  Here is the post where I show the half hexagon quilt made with Kaffe fabrics.  That one is a large couch quilt but I want this one to be twin size or larger.  I think I will leave out ...

Looking through the cutting dies........... from Exuberant Color

I have decided the next neutral quilt will be bricks and I will use these dies to cut the pieces.  The brick is a finished 3" x 6" size and I will need 3" finished squares for the beginnings and ends of every other row.  I may come up with one more quilt to cut at the same time.

First finish in 4 months........... from Exuberant Color

I finished hand sewing the binding and this quilt is finally finished.  It is a little under 41" square.  There are African fabrics, Australian fabrics and batiks in this one.  This makes 20 finishes so far for 2017.  My goal was 26 and I was on track until August.  Now I'm not sure if I can finish 6 more by Dec. 31st but I will try.
I did some die cutting with my Accuquilt Studio die cutter yesterday too.  This is a stack of 104 half hexagons for a project I showed one day last week.  I have only ...

Not getting much done.......... from Exuberant Color

This is one reason I'm not getting much sewing done.  The embroidery machine came into my studio from the table in the kitchen when company was here.  I also moved all of the furniture so a queen size air mattress could be here in the studio last week.  I haven't gotten it all put back yet.
I dug up the canna bulbs yesterday.  My daughter in law wants to plant them next year.  This was 5 bulbs when planted in June and now there are 10 or 11 in this large pot.

I ran across this page which ...
