Who is right?........... from Exuberant Color

If you have been reading my blog for a long time you might remember in 2011 I bought the Accuquilt Studio die cutter.  Here is the blog post where I showed it and talked about it.

I have purchased many dies over the 9 1/2 years I have owned it and I USE them all the time.

When visiting a friend's quilt shop I purchased this half rectangle die.  It is a GO die which I can cut on my Studio cutter using an adaptor under the dies.

Like I do with all of my GO dies I ...

I had to make 2 more.................. from Exuberant Color

After making the first 2 blocks with the mottled batik fabric in the X position I thought maybe this might be a good quilt to use a wide variety of mottled batik fabrics.  I have a 15" high pile of mottled batiks in many different colors.  They have been sitting on one of my cutting tables for many months while I tried to decide how to use them.  I have several white with gray prints to use as the light fabric and many black background with gray batiks for the diamonds. (Block is Hattie's Choice cut with a GO ...

Making test blocks.............. from Exuberant Color

I cut some blocks with my dies yesterday as tests for the directions on the packages.  The directions don't give all of the information that I think is important so sometimes it takes 2 tries to get the blocks sewn correctly.  This one is Hattie's Choice which I have tried once before but I wanted to refresh my memory.

Then I made some LeMoyne star blocks.  The last 2 test blocks I made had me confused about the grain lines so I think I got it right this time.

I started out the afternoon trying to get some ...

Continuing projects................... from Exuberant Color

I made some wild blue combination blocks yesterday.  It is always a surprise how they turn out.

The last 2 are lower contrast than some of the others.  I also cut some more light fabrics to go with the last 3 dark fabrics I cut on Saturday.  I have 21 blocks finished and they are 9" finished size so there is a long way to go on this project.

I also unpicked the seams for the other half of the top of the Kaffe Trip Around the World.  I need to slice the last 2 stratas into loops before I ...

More fun making blocks............ from Exuberant Color

I did more cutting than sewing yesterday but did get 4 blocks sewn.  I don't have them all turned the same way and that gives me another idea for a layout.

I have pieces sorted for 8 more blocks.  A reminder here for my once a week readers, I am cutting these blocks with my die cutter and the block is Crossed Canoes.

While I had the iron on yesterday morning I pressed the 12 blocks that were already sewn and put them up on the design wall.  If they get sewn edge to edge there will be a ...

Crossed Canoes.................... from Exuberant Color

For my TV sewing I decided to make more Crossed Canoe blocks that I cut with my die cutter.

I'm doing them in batches of 3 blocks because 2 passes through the cutter with 6 layers on each cuts the number of pieces I need for 3 blocks, 3 light fabrics, 3 dark fabrics 2 layers of each print.

Since Friday night is a 3 hour TV session I got 3 sets of three sewn.

I don't have any idea what I'm making at this point.  I'm just enjoying sewing blocks.

The first weekend of January........ from Exuberant Color

I am glad the year started with a holiday and then a weekend.  It gives me time to relax and reorganize my thoughts.  I am starting this year with more unquilted tops (34) than I had last year (31) but that isn't much of a gain.  I hope to quilt 4 of the tops this month.

Here is my first test block that I die cut to test the accuracy of the die.  It will go in the batik orphan block box.  It is Crossed Canoes and a block I have always liked.

The box of 2.5" Kaffe ...

Still sorting.......... from Exuberant Color

I realize this photo is blurry but I got spooked by a noise outside one of my basement windows and didn't want to go back down there and take another photo.  I'll go out today and see if there is an animal stuck in a window well.....or footprints on the ground by my window.......

I see that I have enough light fabrics already cut for more blocks so I just need to cut the light center squares and all the rest is dark that I need.

Cutting day.......... from Exuberant Color

I spent most of the day yesterday with my die cutter.  We had rain headed for us but it went east faster than it was going north so we got a whopping one tenth of an inch of rain.  Areas a little south and east got most of the rain.  My lawn mower isn't getting much use this year.  I need to go out and spray the weeds in the lawn since they are so easy to see.  The grass is brown and the weeds stand out in their greenery.

The new Kaffe Collective fabrics have finally been shipped ...

#3 finish for February 2020............ from Exuberant Color

The dirt will never show on this baby quilt with its medium and dark value fabrics.  It ended up about 38" x 39".  I'm sure it will shrink a couple inches when washed because of the loop quilting.

The back is a nice quality and pretty flannel fabric.  It is really closer to a hot pink than red in the background but it still looks great with the fabrics on the front.  The batting is Warm and Plush 100% cotton and the binding is the same fabric as the border and is all machine finished.
As a refresher, here ...

#1 finish for February 2020........... from Exuberant Color

This is my Valentine quilt this year.  It has 19 hearts hidden in the piecing, some more obvious than others.  The fabrics are all Australian.  It is 54" x 68" and designing was started in August 2017.  I almost gave up on it after the 2nd day of playing at the design wall in 2017.  The last hand stitches in the binding were done last night.
The back is pieced from one full width and 2 long leftover strips from other backings.

This is my 4th quilt made with Australian fabrics and I still have a stack a foot high ...

My black Friday purchase.............. from Exuberant Color

I saw this cart advertised at Michael's craft store on Black Friday and ordered it.  Of course it came unassembled so I spent a little over an hour putting it together.

Here is one that I purchased 3 years ago and the new one is considerably larger.  I put my GO! dies in it, all of the ones in this cart plus all of the ones on a rack on a shelf.  This smaller cart will keep my current projects ready at all times in the lower 2 bins and can be wheeled over to whichever machine I am ...

Some sewing............ from Exuberant Color

I sewed the blocks with the dotted fabric to add to the kitty blocks.  Now it is up to 30" square.  It is getting closer to baby quilt size.

I finally got around to pressing the remaining sashing strips on the 35 batik star quilt.  I know it is almost 96" long because it is almost end to end on the 96" double design wall.

This is the fabric I have chosen for the border.  I won't get it sewn on today because my art quilter friends are coming.

Final layout............ from Exuberant Color

Here is my final layout of the batik star quilt.  I need to sew on the left side and bottom edge sashing strips and then I can sew it all together.  I'm predicting it will be about 69" x 96" when sewn together.  I might consider a light print batik border but I won't know until I sew it together and then look through my fabrics.
I found the dotted fabric that I thought might work for some alternate blocks on the wonky heart quilt but I only have a quarter yard so there is enough for 8 ...

Sewing, cutting, bird watching........... from Exuberant Color

I showed 4 of these blocks that I made shortly after getting the Wonky Heart die for my die cutter.  I cut 12 more blocks yesterday and got them sewn last night.  They are only 6" finished and I only have a little more of the bright kitty print so I'll have to figure out what I can do to make the quilt bigger than 24" square.  I have enough of the black print to make quite a few more blocks so I really just need to find another bright print I like with these.  I'm thinking a ...

A cutting day........... from Exuberant Color

I have cut 205 of the 208 half hexagons needed for my quilt.  I found one more light fabric to cut the last 3 pieces.

I divided the pieces by darks and light/medium contrast.

The scraps left after cutting 5 half hexagons from a strip are an odd shape.  I am going to find my parallelogram die to cut from these scraps and then I'll look for a pattern that can use them.

Moving the table......... from Exuberant Color

I decided to turn the drafting/cutting table sideways in the space so I can walk all the way around it. As you can see there is a drain in the floor there. With people coming to my studio to use my design walls I have to have something sitting over the drain because the floor slopes down all around it in about a 24" diameter.
This is what is currently on top of the table.  I cut a quilt kit for a friend in the summer and while the fabric was out and pressed I cut off a strip ...
