9 Patch Night Vision 11, 12 from Virtual Quilter

Intricate and interesting!

Also intricate and interesting, and on point too, but I like the first one better.

Granny's Square Patch is back in the shop, and I'm happy to have her home!!

After being licensed to Connecting Threads for a few years, Granny's Square Patch is happy to be home!  I have updated and fine-tuned the pattern, and it's available in the shop right here.

This is the version that Connecting Threads sold in Maison Rouge.

Granny's Square Patch includes 6 sizes - Baby, Lap, Throw, Twin, Queen, and King - and uses strip pieced to speed up the process.

Granny's ...

Finishing another................. from Exuberant Color

I had an end of roll piece of batting 127" long so I decided to find 2 quilts that would fit on it.  This was the first one I cut off a piece for.  The other one that fit was the African 16 patch which probably won't get quilted any time soon.
I quilted this one in loops.  It took me over an hour to figure out a problem with bobbin tension so just because I own a longarm it doesn't mean it is fast magic to get one quilted (but I wish it was!).

This is the ...

Framed 9 patch top sewn............. from Exuberant Color

I thought I was going to get so much sewing done yesterday.  I sewed the last 3 seams in this top before noon.  Then two times in the afternoon I went out and cut off old stalks of peonies, asters and hydrangea bushes.  I would normally have done that in mid October but we had such a cold wet fall that I didn't get it done.  Last night I finally pressed the top and got it somewhat crookedly up on the design wall for a photo.  I probably won't quilt this one for awhile since I have two ...

3 more seams to sew............ from Exuberant Color

The top 5 rows are sewn together and the bottom 3 rows are hanging there by the webbing threads.  This should finish around 60" x 72".  I was just too tired to finish sewing those last 3 seams.

I gave away 21 masks yesterday and I had a request for some more masks for the workers at our local family owned grocery store which is 7 blocks from my house.  Some of these masks are identical to each other but I have flipped one of them over to show the other side for variety.  I have made all of mine ...

All 80 blocks............. from Exuberant Color

The last 4 framed 9 patch blocks were made yesterday.

I got them all up on the design wall but I see a few I might move now that I have the photo on the computer.  There is no rush so I'll ponder this for a day or two.
I used the black elastic that I found 2 days ago for this group of masks.

I have lost count of how many I have made but I think it will be close to 100 when I use all of the elastic that I have.

I made a few more ...

More framed 9 patch blocks, almost there.............. from Exuberant Color

7 out of 11 framed 9 patch blocks completed.  I have paired solids and prints for the last 4 but haven't sewn them yet.  Hopefully by tonight I'll have them all done and my layout finished on the design wall.

I decided to search one more time for elastic and found another piece of 1/8" elastic a little under 3 yards and some black 1/4" elastic that was really a soft stretch so it should be comfortable on the ears.  The people I am making them for aren't wearing them 8 hours a day, just ...

Checking out the layout............ from Exuberant Color

I put 64 of the 69 finished framed 9 patch blocks up on my design wall to see whether the last 11 blocks need to be dark or light.  I put them up on the wall in a light, dark, light, dark arrangement and it is looking too light to me.  I think all of the rest will be dark blocks.  That means I may have to cut some new solids to pair with them.
A friend called and requested some masks for her family.  I put 7 out on the porch for them yesterday morning and finished this batch ...

Small projects............ from Exuberant Color

I got the binding on two more mug rugs.

I made 2 sets of masks in the same fabrics. Two of them went to family friends and I kept 2 on hand in case someone else needs one.

This is the other side of those two masks.  I'm using batiks that I hadn't found a use for before.

This group was given to family and friends last week.

I cut prints for 9 more framed 9 patch blocks and paired them with contrasting solids.  That leaves 11 more to find fabrics for.

This is one of the fabrics ...

Orange thread.............. from Exuberant Color

Yesterday I was sewing with orange thread, putting binding on 2 mug rugs and sewing one more framed 9 patch. I also spent some time out in the back garden raking off layers of wet leaves so the early plants could see the sunshine.

I have been reading on blogs that some people are having trouble getting started on any sewing project in these unsettling times.  My advice: go sew some mindless scrap blocks and while you are stitching them you will start getting ideas for which other projects you might want to work on.  Did you ever notice ...

March 2020 recap................ from Exuberant Color

Three finished quilts for March.  That is 3 months in a row with 3 finishes.  Can I keep up the momentum?

The one on the left Prismatic Garden 14 is 41.5" x 57" and was quilted on my straight stitch machine. The block components were made several years ago but the top was finished in March last year.

Kaffe Meets Plaid in the center was quilted in straight lines on my longarm.  It finished at 70" x 95".  The top was finished in Aug. 2016 and backing was chosen last year.

Downtown on the right was quilted on my ...

Whew, quilt top finished............. from Exuberant Color

Here is the view as I was approaching the design wall to photograph the Blooming 9 Patch quilt top.  I don't think the color is perfect but is close.  It ended up 88.5" x 107".  Even though it is huge, on a queen bed that has a 15" deep mattress it wouldn't be large enough.

The design wall is only 84" tall and I'm not tall enough to get the quilt all the way to the top so there is about 12" laying on the floor.  But the good news is that it is all sewn ...

Sewing and snowing............ from Exuberant Color

I really didn't intend to work on this Blooming 9 Patch yesterday but I needed to do a load of laundry so I was in the basement.  My washing machine is 46 years old so I'm never far away when it is running.  I got the last 2 sets of 3 rows sewn together and sewn onto the corner triangles.
Here are the pieces for the last 4 rows.  The small corner triangles will be sewn on after all of the rows are sewn together into a quilt top.

Here is the fix a friend suggested for the ...

Sidetracked again......... from Exuberant Color

I intended to work on the sashing on the Spring Star project.  I started out the day yesterday looking for something and opened my dad's briefcase.  He passed away in Aug. 2013 and I just put everything pertaining to him and my mother in that briefcase.  2 hours later I had cleaned out and recycled or shredded about half of the contents.  Didn't find what I was looking for. One thing I did find was my paternal grandmother's obituary.   She died at the end of the Spanish flu pandemic 1918-1920.  All 5 of her children were sick ...

Back to blooming 9 patch.............. from Exuberant Color

I got three more rows sewn for both opposing corners and sewed those sections together.  I got one section added onto the other corner but this one is just pinned to the design wall.  I will sew 3 more rows for each of the corners and sew them into a section to be added too.  That will leave the 4 identical center rows to be sewn. To sum that I up I have the 20 shortest rows sewn and have the 10 longest ones left to sew.  I also have some 9 patches left to sew and 4 triangle corners ...

Here Fishie Fishie from Jean Swenson

Here Fishie Fishie
March 2020

If you take a closer look at the picture, the name fits. The pieces of the past fabric include leftovers from a memorial quilt I made for my brother-in-law (Opening Day) and for my nephew, who loves sharks (A-B-Chomp). And, a little bit that was left from my Silver Lining.

Design? I guess it is a 9-patch with a tweak. When I had the 9-patch blocks on the design wall, they seemed to want more. So I added alternating 1″ strips to the tops and bottoms.

This will be donated to the County of Ventura ...

Switching projects............ from Exuberant Color

Among other things that I did yesterday I made 12 more blocks for the framed 9 patch quilt top.  11 of them are Kaffe fabrics and one is a Brandon Mably fabric.

It snowed off and on all day yesterday.  The streaks are the snowflakes when it was snowing the heaviest.  It piled up on pine and evergreen trees but the ground was too warm for more than a thin coating.

2 larger corners......... from Exuberant Color

My two sewing friends came over yesterday. They were both working on One Block Wonders.  I continued adding rows to 2 corners of the Blooming 9 Patch.  There still isn't room to put the top left corner up unless I taped it to the ceiling.
I have that top left corner sewn to the same size as the bottom right corner.  I might get 2 more rows sewn on each corner each day but there are 20 rows left to sew and they just get longer and longer.  I hope I can get the top done by the end ...

9 Patch 'n' Apps 7×7 21, 22 from Virtual Quilter

I always enjoy adding quilting designs to virtual quilts … and wish I could quilt a real quilt as quickly as I can virtually quilt!

Doesn’t help my quilting speed that my prefered method of quilting is by hand!

Corners started............. from Exuberant Color

I did a lot of sewing of 9 patches to get caught up on previous rows and made enough of the last row of 9 patches to start sewing the 2 opposite corners.  There isn't room on the design wall to put the upper left corner on the wall but I had just enough room at the bottom right to pin that one in place.  There is a LOT more sewing to do on this one.  I'll probably bounce between 3 or 4 projects so it will take awhile.  At least I know it is going to look ...
