Primrose Throw Quilt in a Rainbow of Kimberbell Basics! from Busy Hands Quilts

It has been too long since I've made a rainbow quilt! This one was so fun to put together in the Primrose quilt pattern with the 9-patch blocks in all colors of the rainbow radiating across the quilt top.

Sample block and other things............... from Exuberant Color

I made one sample block for the corners (bottom left corner). This one is made with just 2 fabrics but the 4 I will make (now that I know it works) will be an assortment of fabrics, just like the side border blocks. I will be happy to have this quilt top off the design wall. I don't know why the camera thought it should look pink in this photo. It is very purple.

I finished sewing these blocks and got them trimmed. This is one batch of them and there are 2 alike of most of them.

Explanation of the corner blocks....................... from Exuberant Color

Thanks to everyone who has tried to help me with the dilemma of the corner blocks of my purple Rosy quilt. Since several were no reply I couldn't comment back to them. This post showed my first trials for corner blocks. This photo shows a side border block. The 2 larger squares touch the outside edge of the center and the rows of 3" squares are on the outside edge of the quilt. I'm showing that the block will finish at 9" x 10.5".

One more audition.............. from Exuberant Color

More fabrics were auditioned yesterday for the coping strips and this is the only one I'm considering.

I cut some more strips for my other project and sewed them last night. I pressed the first batch made previously while I was in the basement doing laundry.

We've had some gray days and today they say we will have sunshine and 50 degrees.

Finish # 2 for October 2025.................. from Exuberant Color

This older quilt is finally finished. It was started in 2011 so it is 14 years old. The border was added in 2022 and then it hung on a hanger while I agonized about what kind of quilting and what color thread it needed.

There are 2 fabrics on the back, a wide piece of orange with roses and a narrow strip of the other fabric. I love the Folk Art by Kaffe Fassett for the binding.

Layout 2.................... from Exuberant Color

I took out the square that was too light in this purple Rosy quilt and cut another of the second lightest fabric. I decided to try them evenly placed down the center. Then I cut 2 more squares of "dream" fabric and placed them evenly around the center. I usually use a random layout but I was having a hard time coming up with anything I liked. I'll let this one simmer for a day or two.

Last night I counted the squares that will make up the 2 borders. I only need 3 more of the 4.5 ...

Layout one...................... from Exuberant Color

These are the two newest blocks I made yesterday for the purple Rosy quilt.

All spots are filled in on the layout now but I don't think this is the final layout. I'm not sure about the light large square 4 blocks down on the right edge. It is pink, blue, and lavender but maybe not a bold enough print. I have nine 9 patches left over so I could make it a row wider and a row longer but I don't know if I want it to be that large. I still have 2 or 3 ...

Layout so far............... from Exuberant Color

I didn't get any more fabric cut but I did sew some new combinations of 9 patches from the remainder of the first cutting. I have one more lighter fabric cut and will pair it with a dark and then remove a couple of the duplicates and put in the new ones. I also need to cut 2 more fabrics into large squares.

Working on two again................ from Exuberant Color

I sewed on the right border and hoped the bottom border was going to fit.

It did with a tiny bit trimmed off one end.

I haven't made a final decision on the top and bottom borders and these strips are just pinned on the wall. I moved this over to the left on the wall so I had room to start working on the next quilt.

Not working...................... from Exuberant Color

Sometimes you have to play with some blocks to find out what isn't working. I had company yesterday so last night I just pulled out the baggie of 44 three inch 9 patches. I placed them on my sewing table edge to edge to see if they would make a nice table runner top. What I quickly realized is that there are lots of dark colors in these blocks.

I had a stack of batik squares in the same size so I just put them on every other block that was on the table. My conclusion? Neither of them ...

A finish! Yay!........................ from Exuberant Color

My green Rosy quilt (a Kaffe design) is finished. I just love this quilt. What's not to love about green; it goes with everything. Nature shows us lots of green and it goes with every color of flowers.

I have it photographed upside down to the way I designed it so a couple of one way designs are upside down here, but I'm short, and this quilt is taller than me, so I didn't want to unpin it and turn it around.

If I had flipped the photo above, then it wouldn't match this photo that ...

Purple Haze 19, 20 from Virtual Quilter

The 9 patch blocks in this project file are put together with simple straight piecing, though the pieces are rather small. The size of the pieces make the blocks look much more complex than they are.

My favourite today is the second design with blocks which appear darker in the corners creating a diagonal light square in the centre. In a real quilt that could be emphasized by quilting straight lines around the square, ignoring the shape of the blocks.

Finish #4 for August 2024 from Exuberant Color

This quilt is tricky to photograph. If I use auto adjust in my editing program, it gives the pinks a blue cast so I didn't use it.

I don't feel the necessity to name every quilt but I have to have something to call it when I refer to it. This one has just been Hearts and 4 Patches so far. It has Hobbs 80/20 batting in it and it is 59" x 76".

Red, Black and White 13, 14 from Virtual Quilter

This is as far as I have got with mixing more than two colours in basic 9P blocks … and the results can be stunning if you like the colours!

The half blocks around the edge of the second design are interesting!

A quilt top!!................... from Exuberant Color

Yesterday the weather turned cool, 69 degrees after high heat and humidity for many days. My energy comes back with the windows open and a cool breeze coming in. To get this sewn, pressed, and photographed in one day felt good.

The prints are from several lines of Terrie Mangat fabric, fabric that has waited for 12 years to be used. The design is technically a Single Irish Chain but really it is a celebration of all of the prints. It is 55" x 72". I used all of the fish fabric that was left. I don't know what ...

Final layout................... from Exuberant Color

This photo was taken in daylight as my reference for the final layout as I sew it together. I only got 2 vertical seams sewn so far. This is technically a Single Irish Chain but the black with white spots isn't strong enough in value to make the chain stand out. The wild fabrics take over in this one.

This print has all of the creatures that are the Chinese symbols of the year plus years noted on each of them when it was the choice.

Part one................ from Exuberant Color

24 nine patch blocks of each color combination are complete, even pressed last night. They are 9" blocks, the same size as the pile of squares of the other prints (shown a couple days ago). Now I need to cut some squares of the "people" fabric and then I will be ready for the design wall. This will be the simplest of the 2 quilts with these Terrie Mangat fabrics if I end up making both of them.

Another hot humid day predicted so I hired someone to mow my grass this week. I'll spend my time inside designing.

In the studio................... from Exuberant Color

Two quilts arrived home from longarmer Robin and are waiting to be trimmed and binding sewn on. Maybe by the end of the week I'll get that done.

Some stratas were sewn for the beginning of a quilt with Terrie Mangat fabric. If my idea doesn't work, I can use these as part of a backing.

Still hot and humid here. Tuesday predicted to be 73 degrees. I hope it is true.
