tokoyo subway finish from Making A Lather

I made this as part of the rainbow scrap challenge in 2018

It was an oh Franson pattern. I used a 2 inch square interfacing and ironed the squares by color on the fusible side. I could then fold along the strips and sew the rows together. It was a process. As each color of the month was chosen, I would add that color to all the squares that would need it.

It is Tokoyo subway by Elizabeth Hartman.  I downloaded mine from her website when it was free.

60 x 60 = 12 yards

Saturday soire block of the month progress from Making A Lather

I have been working on one of my 5 quilt projects, lately.

5. Saturday soire block of the month. This an older UFO from 2013. I opened the box, and, all of the blocks are pieced. I have the 3 setting kits to start. I am cutting for kit 1. I remember being in love with this quilt. I don't have a picture in the box, so, now, it will be a mystery. I bought the red kit as a block of the month. There was a blue option, and when the lqs closed, I bought the blue version ...

wonderland holiday runner finish from Making A Lather

My finish for Friday is wonderland holiday table runner. As an older UFO, I am so glad it is finally done. I was in love with the fabric line when I signed up for the class at my LQS. I remember, the instructor had us cut pieces, and, put them on paper plates to keep them labeled. If, I can ever get the dining room table ( aka dumping ground) cleaned off, it will look perfect.

92 inches long

scrapbox chevron for May from Making A Lather

I started this UFO as a workshop in 2013, before, I started blogging. I remember buying the pattern at a quilt show in Bloomington Indiana. It has been ready to finish since 2014. What a patient quilt. I can imagine it waiting in the 'to be closet' cheering every quilt that was chosen and moved on, hoping that it would have it's turn. May is the month. It is my one monthly goal to assess what it needs, and, get it done.

IT is also time to report on my PHD progress.

5 quilts April 28, 2023 from Making A Lather

last report April 17, 2023

I try to work on these 5 quilts until they are done. Their turn in the UFO closet is over, and, they need to be finished one way or another. I decided that for 2023, rather than work a little on each one at a time, I would concentrate on just one. I still use the list to plan and look ahead.

This group of 5 quilts has a lot of cutting involved. Which is not my favorite part, so, there has been a few distractions. One of them, is cleaning my sewing room ...

quilt border debate from Making A Lather

When I finished hand me down top, to be honest, I just wanted to be done. I had worked at it with intent, and, I was losing motivation. I really thought I would skip the cool border that was in the pattern and just add a plain border. I let it steep for a few days, and, I realized part of why I started the quilt, was the border. But, 5 rows? really?

I decided to go for it. I have enough fabric, and, I tend to make bed size quilts, and, I started the quilt with the border as ...

hand me down top from Making A Lather

I have been working on the blocks for hand me down in an effort to make rows and join rows. There was minimal matching with the every other block layout.

so fun

I finished the rows at an open sew at the library. Ooo I like it. I am not sure about borders. It is a bout 74 x 74 as it is. I think I will let it rest a bit, and see I want to finish it.

Hand me down is a Bonnie Hunter pattern found in her first book.

 last report march 29, 2023

I try to work on these 5 quilts until they are done. Their turn in the UFO closet is over, and, they need to be finished one way or another. I decided that for 2023, rather than work a little on each one at a time, I would concentrate on just one. I still use the list to plan and look ahead.

This set shows finishes that seemed to take forever to finish. The new ones look more interesting to me as a set. I will be able to jump back and forth when I ...

wool runner finish from Making A Lather

My Friday finish is a wool runner from 2013. I decided not to quilt it. I finished the floss work and attached the backing. I gave it a good press with a wet towel, and, it is lovely, even if, the grass is not. The wool in the kit was hand dyed in beautiful vibrant colors.

13 x 48 inches

hand me down progress from Making A Lather

Sew excited to see progress on my Hand me down quilt Ufo. All the blocks are made, and, I am sewing each star block to its partner. I liked the star blocks individually, but, they look so nice, as every other block. My goal for the month is to have a finished quilt.

I discovered I was 2 hourglass blocks short for the quilt. I just used a few extra flying geese for the center. Now, it will be a "made you look" quilt LOL

wonderland holiday runner from Making A Lather

One, of my "to be quilted" Ufo projects, is an old Ufo from a class that I took in 2013. I have finally quilted it. It is long runner in beautiful Christmas  fabrics. It needs to have prairie points added before I can actually bind it. We had a Local quilt shop, at the time, and, it was just down the road from my home. It was small, but, a great place to hang out. And, ahem, I did my very best to keep them in business. It closed in 2014. I took as many classes as I could. The ...

wool lady table runner from Making A Lather

The next Ufo on my 5 quilt list to do, is a table runner. I bought the kit at a quilt show in Ohio a hundred years ago.

I bought the kit from wooly lady in 2013. Most of the applique was done when I opened the box. There is still a little floss work to be done. The colors are gorgeous, the pattern was really nice. I spent a small fortune on the kit, I don't know why I didn't finish it.

I decided I will just pillow case the gorgeous backing to the front, and call ...

April one monthly goal from Making A Lather

I opened an older ufo called hand me down  last month and have been making flying geese and star blocks. I am nearly done with the blocks. Each block is so different and fun to see, when I finish it. All of them are made from recycled shirt fabrics. I want to make finishing this as my one monthly goal for April. I cut this quilt in 2018, and made the hourglass blocks, before, adding it to the ufo closet.

April tends to get away from me, so I will need to stick to it. We have ...

5 quilts march 29, 2023 from Making A Lather

last report February 20, 2023

I try to work on these 5 quilts until they are done. Their turn in the UFO closet is over, and, they need to be finished one way or another. I decided that for 2023, rather than work a little on each one at a time, I would concentrate on just one. I still use the list to plan and look ahead.

This has been a frustrating round of 5 quilts. The quilts were easily finished, but, none of them, were inspiring to me. I am questioning the method. Yet, I know, I have finished ...

kristals is a top from Making A Lather

kristals is a top. They are brighter than in the pictures. I took the photo at the library. It must be noted, as part of the friendly competetion between Linda and me, I was 4 days ahead of her in finishing the top. And, yep, since I am her longarmer, Guess who will win the finished quilt? But, I love her version, and mine.

fun stars from Making A Lather

It was so exciting to start making the blocks for an older Ufo called hand me down.   I didn't pay any attention to matching fabrics. I wanted to see how different combinations would work. I must confess, I didn't wait until all the flying geese were done... I just couldn't.

so fun

Back to flying geese, more still to do.

flying geese from Making A Lather

Geese are flying here, as I make the units I need for an older Ufo called hand me down. This is top of my list to finish. But, making flying geese takes a lot of patience and time. I decided I wanted them accurate, so, I went with the deb tucker's instructions and template called wing clipper. They are much more accurate, but, I have more fun if I "fly" by the seat of my pants with rectangles and squares. haha

Still, a few every day and the number I need keeps shrinking. I look forward to making the ...

scrappy pinwheels is a top from Making A Lather

I am surprised that this quilt is larger than expected. I thought it would be a small lap quilt, but, it is a good size lap quilt. Scrappy pinwheels is a top. I really like the pattern and revisiting older scraps. Hopefully, it will get a turn on the long arm soon.

I started it in 2018 cutting the pieces and sewing some flippy corners. It went into the ufo closet for a vacation.

I made it a goal here in February as part of the 5 quilts project. It has been a delight to work with it.

My version ...

hand me down ufo project from Making A Lather

I have started working on a new UFO ( hand me down) for my 5 quilts project. I had 2 finishes last week, and, that means it is time to choose replacement projects.

As always, when I open a box that has been in the ufo closet, I need to assess what is there, versus, my notes. My notes said everything was cut. I don't think so. And, it took, some sleuthing to figure out that I cut the flying geese pieces to use deb tuckers ruler and wing cutter. Now, where did I put that?

2018

The alternate squares ...
