Specialty threads – oh the fun! from Quilt Social

All this week I’ve been talking about pairing SCHMETZ needles with Sulky and Gütermann threads according to the sewing task. I had a wonderful time working with Sulky and Gütermann rayon threads yesterday, and as the last post for the week, today I’ll show you how to use some amazing specialty threads.

Let’s get started.

Specialty threads such as silks and metallics can be used to give small quilted items like wallhangings, table runners, art quilts, and even full-size quilts, a little extra glitz, and glamour.

Quilting the Batik Skyline to highlight Banyan Batik Broken Glass fabric from Quilt Social

Today is the last day of the Batik Skyline quilt we’ve been making all week featuring the Banyan Batik, Broken Glass batik line that is available to quilt stores this month!

In yesterday’s post the bold batik street unit was created and joined to the buildings to complete the wallhanging front. Now it’s time to finish the project by quilting it – which means we need a backing and some batting.

Creating a bold batik street for the quilted night skyline from Quilt Social

The night skyline is almost complete! In yesterday’s post a high-rise building and a building with solar panels were sewn together.

We’ve been using one of Banyan Batiks’ latest lines, Broken Glass, to make the wallhanging; the batiks are helping to create a dynamic look to the skyline. Today we’ll add one more house and create a bold street to go in front of the buildings on the quilted wallhanging.

Adding height to a quilted skyline with batik high-rise from Quilt Social

It’s time to add some height to our skyline! In yesterday’s post, we constructed a row of houses with half rectangle rooftops. In today’s post, we add to the batik skyline with some more buildings.

The Broken Glass batik fabric line from Northcott lends itself to designing a night scene. I really like how the fabrics add depth to the design and make it look realistic when you walk down a street at night with light playing off all of the windows.

Making a batik skyline quilt from Quilt Social

The inspiration for this design came from my son – in fact, he did the drawing and I did the pattern writing! I have involved both of my children in different aspects of my quiltmaking and it has led to some very interesting collaborations. This time I showed my son these very dramatic batiks from the Broken Glass line by Banyan Batiks which will be making an appearance in your local quilt store this month.
