Week 110 Photo Challenge: History from Life In Pieces

There was no photo challenge post last week. Grad Girl was running short on time and I was a bit immobile for most of the week before due to knee surgery.  We were all able to get photos this week.  It wasn't an easy subject.

How do you photograph history?

I've been cleaning out closets which is what brought the subjects of my photo to mind.

Kate: Historical Sewing

Once upon a time I made a lot of my own clothes.  Especially for Halloween.  The flapper dress on left was made for a Halloween party when we were ...

3 sections............. from Exuberant Color

It was an odd size quarter square triangle that I needed to finish the rows on this Marcia Derse fabric top.  Once I got the measurement right I cut strips and cut the triangles from them with a ruler for quarter square triangles.  I needed all of the stripes going the same way.  I sewed while I watched TV last night and got this far.  2 more seams and then I can press it and photograph it.  I'm glad I put this top into a time out so I could come up with the perfect solution for the outer ...

My creative week.... a little house for my pins and some paintings from Not Afraid of Color

This week I was distracted by physical pain, but I managed to compete this wee pin cushion!

There are videos of people teaching versions but none gave me a pattern... I found one on line

SunCatcherStudio.com

at first I cut it out large since it was drawn to scale. Too big for a pin cushion but great for a box... so then I cut it out as shown.

I used pink felt scraps since the color of the month at rainbow scrap challenge is pink! yea! It looks wonky in these photos but it's a precious little sturdy ...

» Quarter-Inch Capers

It’s been a busy week here. The weather has been gloomy; just enough light rain to keep the car looking dirty. I was able to get a couple of quilts finished. Quilting and binding done on this one

This is one made by a customer’s mother. She brought the extra fabric for the borders. It was a full size quilt, but I added the borders to make it a queen.

The fabrics look to be from the 1950’s. This one looks like a dress my grandmother had

I put light blue on the back.
I finished the ...

Not Much Progress from Quilts....etc.

While the berries need picking not much will be going on in the sewing room.  Today was more strawberries and today  I will make more jam – I already have 7 quarts of whole berries in the freezer so thought I would stick to jam and desserts for a little bit.  There is still more […]

Ask Jo: Crumb Quilts from Jo's Country Junction

Every so often questions and comments come from readers that I think others would like to hear my response too.  That’s when I feature them on the blog.  This is one of those days. Today I am only answering one question from Melonie about Crumb Quilts. Melonie asked:“I’ve been planning to make a wacky quilt like you …

Creating Quilt Labels using EQ8 from On Point Quilter

Quilt Show season is upon on.

I've been enjoying the photos of award winning quilts from some of the national shows.  They are truly breathtaking.

My local quilt guild -- Maple Grove Quilters -- is having their show this weekend as well.  We have a great group of very talented quilters.  I also enjoy spending time enjoying their quilts.

During the last couple of months, I have been busy on the longarm finishing up my quilts for the show.  No custom quilting for me this year.  I was in production mode.

Two weekends ago, I was at a quilt retreat.  A ...

"Een verhaaltje vanuit de winkel" from Supergoof Quilts

Goedemorgen lieve allemaal,

het is al weer zaterdag,
laatste winkeldagje van de week,

en ik denk,
jeetje,
wat gaat de tijd toch snel,....

We hadden een gezellige drukte bij Supergoof met mooie

inspirerende workshops van de Australische Deborah Dorward.

Allerlei handige tips kwamen voorbij,

Mom Turned 89 Today from Quilting My Way

This morning, I was expecting mom to come over to do her laundry because of the machine being broke. I waited. Then I walked with Ron, and we went around the block 4 times.

I picked up the puzzle I finished and got it ready to take to mom. Patrick got home from golf about that time. I got laundry going after mom called to say she was getting her machine fixed on Tuesday and wanted to know when we were coming over. Told her about 3:30 pm. she told me what she was doing. Working on her applique ...

A Gardened Passion from A Quilted Passion

If you had told my younger self I would be a quilter in my 40s and a gardener in my 50s, I would’ve said “No way Jose!”   Yet, here I am, quilting and gardening.

The idea of gardening came to me last Spring after a couple of heavy snowstorms damaged a bunch of limbs on the trees leaving me with a lot of bare ground after I had them properly trimmed.

I asked a few peeps for advice on what to plant and got busy. Shortly after getting several things in the ground, a friend found this little playhouse ...

Saturday Sparks Link Party 616 from Pieced Pastimes

Welcome to Saturday Sparks 616!

Starting off todays party with a 'if you build clean it, they will come' moment!

DH has built many birdhouses and placed them about our property.

This particular one rests on my clothesline post, of which I use quite regularly.

Nesting materials had built up and blocked the entrance hole, so DH grabbed his ladder and did a bit of spring cleaning.

Within a day of his clean out, the tree swallows moved in to begin their yearly ritual.

For this, I am thankful!

"Just like a bird's nest, nature has a way of ...

What Kelli is Reading: On a Quiet Street from Jo's Country Junction

Kelli has been busy listening to books. She recently came across a couple of duds that she decided not to share with all of you. With today’s book, she finally landed on a book she was willing to share. The book is On a Quiet Street by Carla Kovach. Kelli writes: “I liked it pretty …

Heavy! from Adventurous Quilter

This quilt finish is quite heavy! Not too heavy, just heavy enough to be like a warm hug!
It's heavy because I used 3" squares which means the excess fabric folded over almost covers the back of the hexagon, so the quilt top is more like two layers of fabric.
Lots of fabric overlap. I love this technique. It allows me to use up my precut scrap hoard! It'll be years before I run out of precut scraps!

» Priscilla's Workshop

I am classified as an elderly person. Given that, I wonder why Pinterest, another Google offshoot like these blogs, sent me salacious photos of young men in tight briefs and penis pictures and dildo pictures as part of their "We thought you might like these" come ons (phrasing deliberate). Don't get me wrong. Elderly people aren't asexual but that particular selection of images was bizarre. I don't even know why anyone would want a random shot of a pile of red dildos regardless of age. I mean my feed usual is kitty pictures and dog/cat videos ...

Friday check in: some out, more in from With Strings Attached

Setting up

Our guild hosts Raffle Mania every year.  We bring quilt-related items we no longer need to own.  We get free tickets based on our attendance for the year and can buy additional tickets.   For me:  I brought 100 yards of fabric (batiks, green, red, Christmas, and brown/tan in 2-gal. ziploc bags).  I got 12 free tickets and spent $20 for 35 more.

I dropped tickets in the bags for the fabric that really appealed to me.  I had tickets left so I dropped them into random bags.  That unscientific technique worked.

Look what I won!

That's ...
