Still behind, but catching up from The Academic Quilter

Hello everyone, and happy weekend! It seems to me that these weekends are coming closer together than they used to, though this was a long week. I think that means that we're heading towards summer. Seems like it has been a long time coming, doesn't it?

In my few spare moments this week (ha, ha!) I finally started getting caught up on the Rainbow Scrap Challenge for this year. I have done very little for it since January, when the color was pink. I know, you thought I gave up! I had my doubts, too, but I ...

Grassy Creek [AKA October Picnic] is Complete! from TheEclecticAbuela

Every year, I enjoy creating a version of Bonnie Hunter's mystery quilt. This year, her quilt was called Grassy Creek.

Grassy Creek [AKA October Picnic]  (98" x 98")

I used Bonnie's colors of red, orange, gold, and grey; however, I substituted blue for her green. I call this October Picnic because this was my color inspiration photo and the palette I created.

The quilt went together well, thanks to Bonnie's excellent writing of instructions. You can see some of the steps I took by clicking on the "Grassy Creek" label on the right pane of this blog ...

Summer Sunshine--continued from TheEclecticAbuela

I'm still working on my Summer Sunshine (AKA Winter Blues, designed by Bonnie Hunter).

Got the 16-patches, the alternate blocks, and the setting blocks (except the 4 corners) done. I have a Swiss dot (white w/yellow dots) on order for the sashing.

Happy Quilting!

Summer Sunshine from TheEclecticAbuela

 I'm starting a new project...Bonnie Hunter's Winter Blues.

Don't adjust your screen--it isn't blue!

Conventional wisdom says, "Do not use too much yellow in a quilt."

The Eclectic Abuela says, "Bah Humbug!"

Here is Bonnie's quilt:

One 16-patch down . . . a gazilion more to go! You may need to wear sunglasses for this one.

Yellow from Samelia's Mum

February is yellow month in the Rainbow Scrap Challenge and I have really enjoyed playing with my yellow scrap fabrics. At first, I did wonder if I'd have enough yellow scraps to create much of anything.

retreat and one monthly goal from Making A Lather

Our guild had another open sew Saturday. I took what I had done on bonnie Hunter quilt zuckerwatte from her book string fling, and, decided to see how far I could get. With just 20 minutes to spare, I had the center top finished. It was a great boost. I had started at the beginning of January with only string blocks made. I cut a gazillion  HSTS - ( half square triangles ) ... sewn a bunch together, and made  rows. and blocks.

Now that we have a new month, it is time to refocus on another set of goals. My one monthly goal ...

Grassy Creek--Part 2 from TheEclecticAbuela

The second clue of the Bonnie Hunter mystery quilt, Grassy Creek, came out this week.

Grassy Creek--Clue 2

These are just a few of the units. I'm substituting blue for the green Bonnie used. The blue fabric is a tie-dye type, so I'm getting a bit of color variation in the units. I like that--it adds interest. Below is the photo I'm using for color inspiration:

More to come.

Crochet Giant Granny Square Throw Progress from Quilting Stories

Crochet Giant Granny Square

At the begining of this new lockdown I started searching my stash of yarns with the aim of creating a new multicolor giant granny square blanket.

I picked up all the colored yarns I found for needles or crochet number 4, keeping the brown, grey and beige for another project.

Here I used the brand Fonty quality Ambiance 100 % superwash Woll superfine SW.

This is a very simple and pleasant project. It is never boring as you change colors. I love playing with varigated colors when I work on a project, that is quilting or knitting.

more yellow from Making A Lather

Boo

Hubby and I decided to make a pumpkin this year. Our hands won't do the whole carving bit.

I have the 2 yellow rows I need for my row x row quilt finished. Not too exciting, but, progress. It looks nice with autumn leaves.

And this is why we don't wash scraps....

I had to wash them, hubby found them in a bag in the garage. I don't know how they got there, or where I had them. They smelled musty and gross. Most of them were big pieces. but, there were smaller pieces, too. Now ...

a bit of sunshine from Making A Lather

I didn't do much yellow sewing for the rainbow scrap challenge. I have scraptastic star and the row x row to do yet. I cut the pieces for the row x row. I needed 104 each of yellow and white.

I chain stitched them together in groups of ten, in between other sewing. It gets a little boring otherwise.

I trimmed them each evening. They didn't need much trimming, but, I wasn't taking any chances.

Then I pressed them.

 I did sew 4 together.

Why didn't I do more? I was working to finish this quilt ...

more yellow sunshine from Making A Lather

If it were not for the yellow in my rainbow scrap challenge blocks, there would be no sunshine in Indiana these days. We have had dreary dark days already. with a twinge of cold. Hubby had to clean out the garden with the threat of frost.  I have had a cold. How do you catch a cold in this sterile world these days.?

I am moving along on my blocks for October. It's hard to think, we are almost done with the challenge for 2020. I have a small basket of ufos to work on for next year. Most ...

sunshine yellow from Making A Lather

Yellow is the color of the month for the rainbow scrap challenge. Yellow is my favorite color, but, it doesn't look as lovely in my patterns as some of the other colors. hmmmm

country roads

tiny houses

I've been working to finish a couple of ufos. I finished Aunt Mary's double irish chain yesterday.

I ran into a snafu with the patriotic ufo. I discovered that I had 3 sashing strips for the inner border attached, but, not the fourth. It was nowhere to be found. I made the decision to unattach one of the borders, and ...

rsc yellow ps from Making A Lather

I am starting the month with the tiniest pieces for the rainbow scrap challenge. I am hoping the color is yellow. I had been adding yellow psp20 blocks as I was making other psp20 blocks, if I found yellow in my scraps. Otherwise, I would not have made them, since, I am committing to finishing a quilt before I work on anything else.  So far, it's been a week, and, I have kept that commitment.
Yellow is my official favorite color.

I have already started looking ahead to next year's rainbow scrap challenge, and, decided it will be ...

One block, two blocks from The Academic Quilter

Hello everyone! Well, the first week of school is in the books, and it went pretty well, if I do say so myself. The students seem pretty much up for Zooming, and they actually showed up for class, so it's looking good so far. This is a huge relief, and I feel so much better now that the first week is behind me. The planning takes a long time, but it certainly pays off. My only trouble right now is getting library materials, but they are reopening on Monday, so that may just work itself out as well. Yahoo ...

Stress planning from The Academic Quilter

Hi everyone! How are you today? The last couple of days we've been having amazing weather, so much so that I've managed to get several miles worth of walking in. I even considered wearing sleeves one morning because it was a bit on the chilly side, relatively speaking, when I started out. I warmed up plenty, don't worry. But it's been just a lovely late summer these last few days, which feels fantastic. We even ate outside last night! And they made progress on our renovation! Happy spots in the midst of this weird year.

Sunday Quilt Inspiration: YELLOW from Fleur de Lis Quilts and Accessories

Although we've gotten a few rain storms here, they are short lived and before you know it, the sun is drying things up again. We are talking about a brilliant, sweltering, yellow sun. I doubt that it's any brighter at the equator. Regardless, I've been thinking yellow today. The steam on the concrete only adds a hazy, mushiness to the yellow. It's bright y'all. I thought I'd share the glory...

Small distractions from The Academic Quilter

Hi everyone! I hope you're all doing well today. Still hot and rainy here, so, you know, looking to start growing mushrooms on my north side any time now. Unbelievably, this weekend is our one-year anniversary in Baltimore. For some reason, this feels really momentous. Maybe it's the heat. Or the quarantine. Who could have known what the last year would bring?

This week I needed some distractions from everything that's going on, but I just didn't have the mental energy to work on anything important. Do you ever feel that way? You want to sew ...

Taking a wrong turn from The Academic Quilter

Hi all! So, here we are in the middle of July. How do we feel about this? I feel like I lost about four months somewhere along the line, but at the same time I feel like the last couple of months have been as long as a couple of years. Anyone else feel the same way? On the upside, though, and as a direct effect of being cooped up for so long, I have discovered heirloom tomatoes, and now I never want to eat any other kind. This will undoubtedly make the squirrels quite happy, as I suspect they ...

Stitching out the stress from The Academic Quilter

Hello all, and happy Friday the 13th!  Just what we need, right? Gosh, I hope you all are having a much better time than I am right now. I want to keep this light, so I'll just say that my university has shut down, like many many others, and we are moving all of our classes online. This is *much* harder than it sounds. It's Thursday night as I write this, and I've already put in about 55 hours this week, with more to come. Why cancel meetings when you can have them all online? Why not ...

Partially pieced from The Academic Quilter

Hi everyone! How is your week going? I don't mind telling you that it's been fairly good here for the past little while. It has been unseasonably warm and mostly just lovely outside. I spent last weekend at an academic conference in Washington DC without a coat. In January. It was so nice that a couple of us skipped out on the afternoon session and went sightseeing-- and we walked. It was awesome. The conference might have been okay, too. At least my paper was!

So now I'm home and I have a ton of work to ...
