Going through the African fabrics.............. from Exuberant Color

I found a group of 2" strips in the bin with the larger pieces of African yardage.  I did find a small piece of the same fabric I used to border the elephant panel but there wouldn't have been enough to use for another border later.  I decided a different fabric would be better and found these 2 strips, also in burgundy, that would work.  The big pieced panel is 40" square and some of the African fabrics weren't that wide and these strips are long enough.  The flying geese border will be next.

I found more of ...

Things have to look up soon, right?? And random stuff. from caledonia quilter

I bought a layer cake.  Well, actually I bought a lot more than a layer cake, but we'll leave it at that shall we?  At least this goes with a border print that's been in my stash for many years, AND I have a pattern that will work with all this stuff.  So it's good!  Well, except for the part where I'm not supposed to be buying fabric.  Ahem.

Even Coco thinks some of DH's t-shirts should go in the trash bag.

The last couple of weeks have been interesting.

WEDNESDAY Aug. 23rd: I was ...

So much prep work and no sewing............... from Exuberant Color

This colorwash is finally ready to baste.  I'll do a few lines of basting each time I am in the basement.

This quilt is next in line to finish.  I need to replace the needle so that is my hang up on this one.  As I have mentioned before the tops of the needles don't have a flat side so it takes some fiddling to make the machine happy.

I have some fabrics with African motifs but they are printed by our regular manufacturers so they aren't officially African fabrics.  Some of these are Matters of the ...

Oh Scrap! : From the Stash from Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework

I didn't spend a lot of time sewing scraps this week but I did start a new quilt from some of the fabric donated for Compassion Quilts.

I was organizing some of the fabric and I saw a trend of prints with roses.  So I gathered them all up and decided to make a quilt (or two) from them.

From two shades of pink, I cut some 1.5", 2.5" and 3.5" strips.

I was also given a panel of rose and magnolia flowers so I cut those out.

My plan is to sew the strips to ...

Second finish for August 2023.....and a border........... from Exuberant Color

It was a lot of fun searching my stash for all of the pastel fabrics in this quilt.  It finished at 48" x 72".

I used Hobbs 80/20 batting, white cotton thread on top, white polyester in the bobbin.

I bought the backing with dragonflies for a different quilt but it leaned a little too much toward lavender for that quilt.  It was perfect for this one.  The color is more accurate in the first photo.

In the early afternoon I mowed the grass in the backyard.  With all of the shade the grass keeps growing back there.  We ...

Exploring stash............ from Exuberant Color

I need to get the I Spy quilt top off the design wall so I looked for possible border fabrics.  I started with black and white prints but they looked so cold and drab.  Then I spied this paper clip print.  I wonder if kids know what a paper clip is.  I have 3 yards of it so I can cut the borders on the lengthwise grain and the leftover will become part of a backing on another quilt.  I want to put flannel on the back of this one.

I usually preorder a few of the new Kaffe Collective ...

Another backing, maybe............ from Exuberant Color

I didn't want flowers for the back of this Kaffe yarn dyed woven stripes quilt and searched for enough yardage in the Kaffe Collective fabrics.  I have enough for one length of the blue/green Caladium leaves and there is a half width and long enough piece of the houses left over from another backing.

This is how it would be seamed on the back with one seam top to bottom.  I'm not sure about the houses so I'll think about it and keep looking.

I have about 30" left to hand stitch on the binding so ...

Oh, what fun!............. from Exuberant Color

What is more fun that looking through stash?  I need to make some decisions on backings so I pulled a few tops that I want to get quilted soon.  You have seen all of these tops before.  I like this pink background with fantasy sea creatures for this one.

I made this pastel top recently  and would like to get it quilted this month.

I have 4 tops made with the Kaffe yarn dyed woven stripes and this one has his shot cottons in it too.  I think this wild Philip Jacobs fabric looks great with it.

Now I have ...

RSC Week 30 - End of the RED for July from Grandma's Red Needle

Hello everyone! Have you missed me? lol
I can't believe my previous blog post is dated beginning June! Where did those weeks go?! It was not my intention not to blog, it just happened without any particular reason.
July has kept me busy making Advent Calendars for my Etsy Shop. There are some new calendars this year and some that sold out last year. So far 36 (no, it's not a math mistake!) calendars are done, left to sew binding on some. The pockets can be a bit tedious, but it is mindless sewing and I do love ...

Binding chosen but not cut.............. from Exuberant Color

A lot of the pieces that I have left in this Weather Report line of fabrics are less than full width or less than half yards so I had 2 larger pieces to choose between for the binding.  This one (right) is my choice, the blue is the backing on the quilt.  The quilt is trimmed so I just need to press the binding fabric and cut the strips.

Here is the binding audition.  It doesn't show up very well on the white cutting mat.  I think it will look nice.  I have to decide if I'm going ...

Searching for backing fabric.............. from Exuberant Color

This is the fabric I wanted to use on the back of the green zig zag baby quilt but I only have one yard.  I can use it sideways with the stripes of green beans running crosswise instead of lengthwise.

But then I was thinking black and white is what babies see first and maybe this fabric with houses and dogs might be good.  I have a lot of it.

For scale here are the two fabrics side by side.

I kept looking for another choice.

I have enough of this fabric for the back of at least three of ...

Use the pretty ones.............. from Exuberant Color

We finally got rain overnight Saturday into Sunday, 3/4".  That is the first rain in 5 weeks.  It turned cooler with quite a breeze yesterday.

My task yesterday was to find backings...and yes this is a pretty one.

I'm going to put it on the back of the Winged Square/Cut Glass Dish quilt which is mostly light colors.

Next was the backing for the Snail's Trail quilt.

The stripes in this quilt run vertical and the backing will be turned so the leaves run vertical too.  I should have refolded the top for this photo ...

It was hot.................. from Exuberant Color

Yesterday was the first birthday party for my newest great-grandson.  It was an outside party and they only time I checked the temperature it was 90.  The only thing that made it halfway comfortable was the low humidity and a very light breeze.

The heat hasn't bothered my hanging pots in the back yard yet.  I water them when I water my tomato plants back there.

My native Purple Coneflowers are getting ready to bloom.  There seems to be a lot of them in the back garden this year.  This photo was taken at 8 p.m. so the ...

Black and white day............ from Exuberant Color

The black and white fabrics needed to be in a place where I could see them better.  They were in a hard to reach place before and had become very unorganized.

Top shelf left to right: stripes and checks/plaids (and a few graphic prints); large prints; dots, spots and circles; large yardage.

Second shelf: Positive/negative (black with white and white with black, the same print); miscellaneous; miscelaneous; animal print (mostly zebra and giraffe).

What isn't shown here: a pile of black and whites that read as gray (approximately equal amounts of black and white in the print ...

The good and bad about sorting stash............. from Exuberant Color

Yesterday's task was to go through the big bin that had the pinks in it.  There were a lot of miscellaneous light fabrics in it too.

I separated the pinks by peachy pinks and true middle pink.  The good thing is I have the pinks sorted and in nice even piles.  The bad part?  I want to start a quilt right now with the peachy pinks.......but I must continue on with my current quilt project and choose something to finish this month.

I would like to add some soft oranges to this group for a future quilt.

This ...

What I'm doing in the basement........... from Exuberant Color

For many years my Kaffe fabrics were in those lavender storage bins and then I put them out in the open on these 2 shelf units a couple years ago.  All of the Kaffe small yardage (not enough for lengthwise borders or backings) is now upstairs on a shelf unit or two in my bedroom.  On these units I will leave the big bins on their sides on the lower shelves so I can pull the bin off and set it on a chair to look through it.  There are 2 closer shelves below them that will hold the 4 ...

Pinks and oranges................. from Exuberant Color

I sewed roses and soft med. purples to the dark purple dotted batik yesterday.  Then I looked for some orange and red-orange fabrics to add.  In the photo I'm working on the dark single row borders first.  Any pieces not used in them might end up in the mix for the center section.

I keep looking at this batik trying to decide if it will work.  I'll probably go ahead and cut a strip of it and die cut some triangles.

I went out before noon to see what is blooming.  The yellow Evening Primrose is just starting ...

Still playing with stash............. from Exuberant Color

I'm going through batiks in my main floor studio now, pulling ones that I want to use in the Fonthill quilt.  The triangles are 2" finished so I need smaller designs.  I will cut a 3" strip off most of these and cut the triangles with my die cutter.

I'm still moving my Kaffe fabrics upstairs, taking my time and enjoying looking through them as I work on it.  When I get them all upstairs I will then need to shuffle other fabrics back onto the shelving in the basement.  Right now most of the fabric is still ...

Searching through fabrics............. from Exuberant Color

I'm using this photo of the corner of the Fonthill quilt (mentioned yesterday) to talk about fabric selection.  The book gives some references to value and colors of the prints, stripes  and plaids and where they are located in the quilt.  I hadn't ever read all of that detail before.  The dark fabric in the half square triangle borders is the same all the way through the inspiration quilt and Kaffe describes it a a green pin dot on a charcoal background.

A lot of the fabrics in my version will be batiks so that is where I ...

Free day to dream.................. from Exuberant Color

I decided to make a collage of all of the pink quilts I have made from 2016 -2023.  This goes to prove there isn't just one quilt that can be made from pink fabric.  So many times I hear a quilter say I have (insert any group of fabric), what should I make with it?  My answer, choose the style of quilt you like and make it.  I prefer piecing.  Most of my applique was done by machine back in the 1980s, long before I had a blog.  What shape do you like?  Triangles and squares are in the ...
