The Next Challenge from Quilt Paint Create

If you are a regular reader, you know that my art quilt group (Art2Quilt) has an ongoing challenge where the members make quilts inspired by the quilt of another member. We finished round one in May, and round two is due near the end of July.

I won’t show the inspiration quilt because it doesn’t belong to me and I don’t have permission, but I will show what inspired my design.

This is the background fabric in a portrait quilt. It reminds me of the 1960s.

This round will involve paint and creating motifs with Pellon 830 ...

Love of Quilting from Prairie Moon Quilts

Hi, there! If you haven’t already done it by now, I hope you’ll check out the July/August 2023 issue of Fons & Porter’s Love of Quilting magazine.

I have an article in there this time!

It’s about battling burnout. I think we all have to do that now and then. It’s a real thing.

Right around the time I got asked to write the article, I had just come out of a huge slump my ownself, and therefore, I had plenty to say!

If you find yourself in a slump, there are some good suggestions ...

My Top Routines for Optimal Health from Val's Quilting Studio

27 degrees out and there is no where I'd rather be than on this mid morning trek.

Half way there and the incline is about to begin with one right turn.
As I hike my mind is cleansed and rejuvenated at the same time.
As I begin to enter the "senior age category" of life I find myself grateful that fitness and nutrition have always been a major habit in my lifestyle. I haven't done this hike in a while, and it was honestly a personal test of my level of fitness. LOL! Aside from the cold air ...

In Celebration of Trees from The Snarky Quilter

Every spring I am delighted to watch the trees behind my house green up. I want to nibble that delicate tender green as it begins with the weedy understory and creeps up the taller trees. I wait for the old apple tree and the wild dogwoods in the middle of the woods to bloom. And I celebrate the tulip poplar that has taken root at the verge of the back lawn.

However, before all the leafing out began I took many photos of tree trunks and logs that I encountered along the tow path, and played with them in Photoshop ...

Carnegie Museum of Art on Off the Wall Friday from Creations - Quilts, Art, Whatever by Nina-Marie Sayre

Monday, May 1st was my 30th wedding anniversary.  It seems like a big milestone, right?  Really, though I don't think of it that way.  Every day with my husband has been a blessing and I'm just glad it all turned out the way I thought it was going to back in 1993.

Every year we try to do something together that is a little different.  This year we made a day trip to go down to Pittsburgh to revisit the Carnegie Museum of Art.  The last time we were there was 2006ish and so much has changed.  The ...

Gallery Night on Off the Wall Friday from Creations - Quilts, Art, Whatever by Nina-Marie Sayre

One thing that came out of the Pandemic of 2020, is the fact that I will NEVER take "Date Night" for granted ever again.  This week's installment was one for the books!  One night a month, the art scene in Erie comes alive to host a Gallery Night.  Galleries and small business open their doors to show off what's new.

First stop, was the Grounded Print and Paper Shop.  Ever since I've heard about this place, I've been dying to visit.  It's a former machine shop warehouse located in a neighborhood where people have been ...

Easter Egg Inspiration from Telling Stories Through the Needle's Eye

Easter in Germany is a very special time and celebrated in many different ways. I had the privilege of visiting a friends egg collection. I didn't know what to expect, but the eggs were a marvel. Here is a re-posting of my visit so please enjoy!

Signs of spring are everywhere here in Germany! When I (Kara) came home from the Academy of Appliqué, blooms of all kinds were just starting to peek through. Now, after a few weeks back, spring is here in full force. Daffodils and tulips are everywhere, primroses are emerging from the leaves in the ...

Just Because from The Snarky Quilter

Thanks to SAQA’s Material Matters seminar for its members, I’ve had a good time viewing videos and websites that feature innovative materials. I love the idea of wearable art, and the shows are certainly more entertaining than the usual art quilt show.

Somehow the women’s costumes seem to focus on hard to walk in and bondage type outfits, but there’s tons of inventive use of materials in this World of Wearable Art Show highlights video. Of course the outfits are probably best suited to Cirque du Soleil performers.

High couture by Iris van Herpen is modeled ...

2 weeks ago Golden Girl gave birth to Elsa.

My Thimble Collection from Prairie Moon Quilts

I’m not much of a decorator — my sister got all of that gene in our family. So while I love looking at stuff other people have done, I never seem to do much of it myself.

My youngest daughter travels a lot, and she buys me a souvenir thimble everywhere she goes. I also have a few that I’ve collected myself over the years — ones that belonged to my grandmother or that came in vintage sewing boxes I picked up various places. They were all stuffed in a bag for lack of anywhere nice and safe to display ...

Making Creme de Ricotta at Home from CaliQuilter

My girlfriends and I traveled an hour north of the Bay Area to Sonoma, in the Napa Valley, to take a cheese-making class from Sheana Davis, a homemade ricotta wizard. Sheana is an epicurean cheese-maker and provides cheeses to the French Laundry and other five-star restaurants in the area. Sheana travels around the country, learning …

Penland Winter Artist in Residence {experience} from Factotum of Arts

Overall, I loved the two weeks I spent at Penland School of Craft, as a Winter Artist in Residence. The people were amazing. It was so fun to see what everyone was doing in each of the studios. It was amazing just to kick off my new life as ?, who knows (yes, I quit my job with no plans but to rebalance and rejuvenate and work on some art). I am getting ahead of myself though…

I was all prepared, or so I thought, after I had received the acceptance to Penland’s Winter Residency (application process covered in this ...

Woodcut Art & Quilting on Off the Wall Friday from Creations - Quilts, Art, Whatever by Nina-Marie Sayre

Houses, Mabel Hewit, 1936

This week I went down the rabbit hole they call Pinterest,  only to rediscover my love of woodcut art. Woodcut is a relief printing process in which knives and other tools are used to carve a design into the surface of a wooden block. The raised areas that remain after the block has been cut are inked and printed, while the recessed areas that are cut away do not retain ink, and will remain blank in the final print.  It is a very positive/negative area kind of printing!  I always thought woodcut printing was interesting ...

Geocaching in the dark from Crazy Quilter on a Bike!

Oh, I forgot to look for a geocache at the LOVE sign, and I bet there was one there. You have to understand, though, that when you're with a group of 8 other people, none of whom are into geocaching and they are hungry -- one doesn't take time to geocache!

However, that didn't stop me from geocaching in the dark yesterday morning.

I knew we had a heavy agenda for the day, and there probably wouldn't be time to get out for a walk. However, I managed to log 13 KM yesterday! Yep --- no cheating involved ...

Back to Work on Off the Wall Friday from Creations - Quilts, Art, Whatever by Nina-Marie Sayre

Yes!  I finally did it!  Got into my studio to finish up the piecing of Rain, Rain.  It's funny, once I was motivated it just took a good afternoon to put the finishing touches on the composition.  I swear, this quick little project has gotten so out of hand! The more I worked on it, the more I wanted to work on it.  Next thing you know it looked like this....

I'm not doing any borders because I personally hate borders (grin).

The only thing left to do is sew up the columns and layer the top for ...

Art Journey – Exhibitions {Part 2} from Factotum of Arts

Sorry for the delay in this post. The last quarter of 2022 was so busy as I was transitioning my out of my job and the company I worked for, for 24 years. Also, in December I got to go Morocco and came back from traveling with COVID. It was a very interesting year end.

Just a reminder, this is what I have found or done on my journey moving from being a quilter to a textile artist. This may or may not be the best path for you. Let’s talk about how to get into an exhibition and ...

Artistic Endeavors – What Art Collectors Choose for Their Homes from The Snarky Quilter

Right now the Cleveland Museum of Art is showing the Keithley collection, a promised gift to the museum of over 100 pieces of art. This eclectic collection concentrates on Impressionist and early modern artists. I found it interesting that the Keithleys collected many prints and Asian ceramic pieces in addition to paintings. The exhibit has photographs of some of the works on display in the Keithley’s traditional looking home. I enjoyed seeing the pieces in such a context.

You can see what’s in the exhibit here, but let me say that size matters when judging the impact of ...
