Guild Retreat Report from The Cozy Quilter

This past weekend, my friend Christine and I went to the semi-annual Oxford Guild Quilt Retreat in Stratford.  We both were very productive at the retreat--sewing morning, noon and night with breaks for meals and sleeping only! This is why there was no blogpost here this past weekend.   I brought lots of projects with me--heaven forbid I run out of things to sew!

I made a couple of Christmas gifts, one of which I can show here now.  This little wall hanging is for my MIL for her room in the nursing home where she lives.  She loves Christmas and ...

An Update from The Cozy Quilter

My husband and I were away for a little over a week recently and I managed to get some more stitches done on my sunflower cross stitch in the car on our way to Colonial Williamsburg, in Virginia. I am not going to be able to finish this picture before the end of the month as I had originally hoped, but I'm ok with that.  One of our (unintended) souvenirs from our trip was two cases of COVID.  We tested positive before leaving Virginia so it was a long 12 hour trip in the car to get home.   I ...

Modern Sampler Borders, Sunflowers, Ribbing, and a Class from The Cozy Quilter

In order to make my Modern Sampler quilt bed sized, I need to add borders.  I decided to make one of the borders pieced with 2.5" squares.  I cut out lots of squares and then made them into twosies.  Some of them have been sewn into longer chains but that's as far as I got this week.  Next time I sit down at the sewing machine, I will work on this again.

My Sunflower cross stitch is 3/4 done!  My goal of having this done by the end of October is achievable, I think.  I will keep ...

Weight of Love, Sunflowers, and the Beginning of a Hat. from The Cozy Quilter

Late last week, I picked up my Weight of Love quilt from my local long armer, Julie. My goal for the week was to have it bound in time to bring it to the Oxford Quilter's Guild meeting on Thursday for show and tell. I finished the hand stitching on Thursday morning.  Yahoo!

The backing fabric was in my stash. There are a few strips in my gray scrap bin from trimming the quilt.

Several years ago, I attended a quilt show featuring quilts from New Zealand.  I purchased some New Zealand fat quarters and used them in this ...

Fall Leaves, Sunflowers and a Swatch from The Cozy Quilter

A couple of weeks ago, I pieced a fall leaves wall hanging and this week, I quilted and bound it.  The background fabric is Essex linen and the print fabrics had all been in my stash for several years. My goal for this project was to use up almost all of these fabrics while making a gift for my MIL.  I quilted it with straight lines using my walking foot.

I used the Essex linen for the binding and hanging sleeve and finished off the hand sewing this afternoon.

Here is the finished wall hanging, ready to bring to quilt ...

Sunflowers and a Mini Vacation from The Cozy Quilter

This past week was not very productive in the sewing room but I did spend several hours working on my sunflower cross stitch picture.  I would really like to finish this picture in the next month or so as I would like to start a Christmas cross stitch project and maybe finish it in time for Christmas...

When we went to Newfoundland in June, we happened upon a little knitting store called "Skivvers Fibre Studio and Wool Craft" in Cow Head  where I purchased a pattern book and wool to make myself a hat, mittens and a scarf. I have ...

A Variety of Projects from The Cozy Quilter

Somehow, I managed to do some sewing almost every day this past week. Two sunflowers are almost done in this quadrant of my sunflower cross stitch.  I also added a bee and some leaves.

I'm going to a wedding shower tomorrow for my cousin's daughter.  If you know her, please don't spill the beans.  I am quite sure that the bride to be does not read my blog!  I made her these pillowcases--they like to go camping so the canoe fabric was chosen with this in mind.

I also made her two coiled rope hot pads.  The ...

Making Gifts from The Cozy Quilter

My next door neighbour is an excellent knitter.  Last week, she helped me to fix a booboo in my knitted dishcloth.  She showed me some socks that she was knitting and I noticed that her knitting bag was a reusable grocery bag. I decided she needed a wide open zipper pouch for her sock knitting projects. I purchased the knitting fabric when on a mini shop hop with friends (we visited two shops and went out for lunch). The other two fabrics and the zipper were in my stash.  Can you tell I like dots?  My neighbour was thrilled with ...

Sunflowers, A Knitting UFO and Borders from The Cozy Quilter

There is a reason why they call it SLOW stitching...it takes a long time to finish a project.  I am still working on the second quadrant of my Sunflower cross stitch.  I don't have a deadline for this picture so it will get done when it gets done.

I found a project bag with this knitting in it this week--I started this dish cloth in February and it got put away... it was about half done. I decided it needed to be finished! I'm not sure why I waited so long.  I bought some wool to make ...

Two Quilts Pin Basted, Navy Scrappy Blocks, Sunflowers and Visitors from The Cozy Quilter

It is so much easier on the knees and the back to pin baste quilts on a table rather than the floor.  I took advantage of the tables at the Ingersoll Creative Arts Centre this past week to get two quilts ready for quilting.  The first one is a pattern by Christine at Tesselate Quilts.  I pieced the top over a year ago and it has been hanging out in the pile of completed tops for too long!

My Kaffe Fassett Overlapping Tiles quilt was also pin basted this week. I have a quilting plan for both of these quilts--using ...

Five Placemats, One Baby Book, Sunflowers and Gros Morne National Park in Nfld. from The Cozy Quilter

I have now finished my five placemats for Meals on Wheels.  The yellow and gray one was an orphan block which I made wider by adding strips to the sides of the block.  I also took a picture of the backs of the placemats--you can see that I used up some of the fabrics used on the fronts on 4/5. These will be collected by the Oxford Guild for distribution at Christmas.

At the guild sewing day on Monday, I finished off the placemats and made a cloth baby book from a panel.   This will be a gift for ...

Placemats for Meals on Wheels, Sunflowers, Ottawa and a Field Trip from The Cozy Quilter

The members of the Oxford Quilter's Guild are making placemats for Meals on Wheels recipients for Christmas so each member of the guild has been asked to make 4-5 placemats.  I decided to get mine done early. So far, I have one done and three in progress. This first one was made with some charm squares that were in my stash.

This one still needs to be quilted.

I have had this tool fabric in my stash for a while and I'm sure someone will like it!

I used more of the lighthouse fabric on the back of ...

UFO Progress, Yellow Blocks, Sunflowers and Burnt Cape Ecological Reserve, Nfld. from The Cozy Quilter

Christine and I got together this week for a few hours to sew and chat.  Christine cut out squares for a disappearing nine patch baby quilt and I finished sewing my Overlapping Tiles quilt top.   I have not trimmed it yet--I may even do that after it is quilted to avoid all those bias edges as I quilt. The backing fabric is ready--it is the turquoise with the pink flowers that is the constant in the quilt top.  My husband held the top for me to take a picture --it was a bit breezy!

I bought myself a Half Rectangle ...

Guild Sewing Day from The Cozy Quilter

I have not attended the weekly Oxford Guild sewing day since before we went to Newfoundland and finally went this past Monday.  I like going because I get a lot done and there are lots of friendly quilters to chat with as I sew.  I usually bring a UFO that I want to move to the finish line. The last time, I worked on my Overlapping Tiles quilt that I started 9 years ago in a class with Kaffe Fassett, and since it is still not done, I brought it along again.  I managed to get all of the diagonal ...

Rainbow Scrap Challenge, Sunflowers and Battle Harbour, Labrador from The Cozy Quilter

This week, for the first time in a long time, I spent some time sewing every day!  In the sewing room, I worked on my light blue (June) and red (July) blocks for my Rainbow Scrap Challenge projects.  I now have 8 pineapple log cabin blocks completed.  I am aiming for 12 blocks for a wall hanging. I really like working on these scrappy blocks...the fabrics bring back all sorts of memories of other things I have made for us as well as gifts given to and received from friends and family alike.

These 6.5" square slabs are ...

Local Tourists and Back to the Sewing Machine from The Cozy Quilter

I did not have a lot of sewing time in the last 10 days...you see, my cousin and her husband came to visit us for a week.  They live in Scotland and we had not seen each other since 2019.  Since it was their first visit to Canada, they wanted to see all the famous tourist sites including the CN tower in Toronto and Niagara Falls.  So, my husband and I planned an itinerary full of fun and interesting things to see and do...our days were full of chatting and laughing and doing activities together.  Before I share ...

Back from Vacation! from The Cozy Quilter

My husband and I have been away for a month on vacation in Newfoundland, which explains my absence on my blog for the last few weeks.  It took three days of solid driving to get to the ferry in North Sydney, Nova Scotia, to Port aux Basques in Newfoundland.  We listened to an audiobook, "Son of a Critch", by Mark Critch in the car.  Mark's stories about growing up in Newfoundland had us laughing out loud during our journey.  Of course, I did some stitching in the car, making lots of progress on my Sunflower Cross stitch project. You ...

Table Runner Done and Cross Stitch from The Cozy Quilter

I finished the lilac stars table runner binding off last weekend for slow Sunday stitching. It is now ready for gifting! I added a lilac print stripe on the back to make it long enough.

I managed to do some cross stitching most days this week so now I have two sunflowers done and parts of a few leaves. There are four more smaller sunflowers in this quadrant of the picture.

My daughter has been adding more colours to her Ottawa cityscape. Finn is a good cross stitch holder, don't you think???

I spent some time in my sewing ...

A Gift, Orange Blocks and a Walk in the Woods from The Cozy Quilter

On the way to sewing day on Monday, I stopped at the quilt store to pick up a gift for someone and some fabric to make a table runner for a friend who likes purple.   The lilac fabric jumped out at me as there are lots of lilacs in bloom here right now.   I bought three other colours that went with the lilacs and a striped fabric for the binding.  When I arrived at the sewing studio, of course I cut right into the new fabric and got to work on the table runner. (I was supposed to be working ...

Oxford Guild Quilt Show from The Cozy Quilter

I attended our guild quilt show on Friday and Saturday this week--our first show since before COVID.  I entered 9 quilts in the show and took pictures of them in the venue. There were several of my Rainbow Scrap Challenge projects including "All the Colours" based on a pattern by Gudrun Erla called Haldora.

"Scrappy 36 Patch"

"Scrappy Drunkard's Path" and "In Formation"

I put one bed sized quilt in the show--"Memories of Iceland"--the pattern is by Gudrun Erla and is called "Lupine".

"30's Plus Sign Baby Quilt"

"Scraps on Point"
( I was very happy that ...
