All Star from Jean Swenson

All Star

February 2024

For the past two years, I’ve been making an effort to use only my stash and scraps for making quilts and quankets, as I have no shortage of either! I do bend this self-imposed restriction when my artistic-self tells me that purchasing that ‘just right’ fabric is necessary.

Last month, my design of Homecoming began with orphan blocks and was then rounded out with scraps. This quilt – All Star – also started with orphan blocks that I had received from Jocelyn over at Happy Cottage Quilter. She had given me two blue and two beige/golden ...

Square-in-square blocks combined with some alternate blocks make an effective quilt.
Another scrappy bricks quilt. This time, I made 12.5" by 12.5" blocks.

Both quilts will be headed to Annapolis Quilts for Kids.

Charity Quilting from Becca's Crazy Projects

I made this fun, scrappy bricks quilt. I love how each of these is the same and so very different. These are 9.5" by 9.5" blocks made using 2" by 3.5" bricks. That's the smallest scrap I want to deal with.
Simple blocks for the win. I Took inspiration from the border fabrics to choose the squares. Such a fun finish.

Both quilts will be headed to Annapolis Quilts for Kids.

Beautifully pieced by Mary V.
I think this is the last of the red, white, and blue quilts. I got so lucky finding coordinating borders.

I pieced this fun variation of the nine-patch block using 2.5" by 4.5" bricks. A 2.5" by 12.5" strip added to each lets you offset the nine-patches. Bordered with 3.5" strips for a great finish.
I'm almost done using up these leftover red, white, and blue strips. I really like this one.

I love how this odd blocks quilt turned out. The borders tie it all together.
This one I made using colors from the border print.

Homecoming from Jean Swenson

Homecoming
January 2024

Since receiving a box stuffed full of various fabrics from Jocelyn over at Happy Cottage Quilter back in 2022, I continue to incorporate her scraps where I can. The box she sent was stuffed to overflowing with small scraps, a few orphan blocks and a few larger backing-sized fabrics. I’ve featured two of her orphan pinwheel blocks in the center of this baby quilt and made two more of my own to complement her two. I then used other orphan blocks from past projects of mine, including some from, Onshore Breeze and Palahdee. I think that ...

I could spend so much time making churn dash blocks. I love this block! These finish at 12" by 12". I used the sashing to bring the center up to the perfect size for a quilt for Quilts for Kids.
This is the split churn dash. It makes for some fun secondary designs. Want to learn how to make this fun block? Check out Gnome Angel's video tutorial.

I picked up some batting from Annapolis Quilts for Kids last weekend. That means I could get quilting. This is one of my odd blocks quilts.
This one was pulled together from some random four-patch blocks and coordinating squares. Both will be headed to Annapolis Quilts for Kids next month.

Charity Block 4 for GRMQ (Jan 2024) from Life Sew Crafty

Adding another charity block option to our repertoire...

Here we have a riff on 9 patches with one focus square:

Note: This block works best if made as a leader-ender project while sewing other things. It's also nice to have a wide range of scraps for this, so I just cut squares as I'm cutting fabric for other projects and chuck them into my pile. I do the same with the 2.5" checkerboard squares as well. I also use leftover HSTs and QSTs from other projects as focus squares, for example if a project calls for an ...

Walk in the Woods from Jean Swenson

Walk in the Woods
January 2024

I finally finished my Jacquelynne Steves Secret Garden BOM from Summer 2022! While I had completed the top in 2022, I spent most of 2023 looking for that “just right” backing fabric, but was having no luck. I finally got the push I needed to get this off my UFO rack when a local group was wanting donations for the holiday season for the Good Shepard Shelter, a long-term treatment and education-based shelter for women and their children who are healing from domestic violence. So, I gave up looking for the “just right” backing ...

Humpty’s Tulips from Jean Swenson

Humpty’sTulips
December 2023

This year has been a year of many changes. Back in January, my Dad relocated to an assisted living facility that is 200 miles closer to me than where he had previously lived: he’s now about 15 miles away. With him being closer, I now not only get the time to hangout and visit with him more often, but I’m also available to help him with his doctor’s appointments, which are abundant. As such, my time has become much more limited this year for my hobbies — sailing, sewing and gardening.

But, this wasn ...

On Saturday I dropped off fifteen quilts at Annapolis Quilts for Kids. That's the lost batch I will drop off this year. I will get a couple more quilted before the end of the year. This is my most productive year yet with well over 100 quilts quilted for Annapolis Quilts for Kids. I don't think I will reach 150 but it will be close.
