Partial binding and 9 patch progress................ from Exuberant Color

I started out the day getting another huge backing made for my Charley in the Forest quilt.  You will see the fantastic backing fabric in a few weeks.

I salvaged some of the cut off backing strips on the Hugs and Kisses flannel quilt and sewed them together.  I went ahead and sewed it on the quilt and I'm short about 55".  I have a little yardage left so I'll cut the remaining 2 strips from it.  I should have the binding finished today.

For the rest of my 3 hour sewing session last night I got the ...

Lazy day............. from Exuberant Color

This Hugs and Kisses flannel quilt was unpinned from the longarm frame and trimmed and that was it.  No ambition to do any more.  Some days are like that.

I pressed the 9 patches from yesterday and put one from each set of 4 up on the design wall.  I sewed 3 more strips sets and pressed them too and cut the segments for 9 patches.  I need to get busy today and cut some more batting to match with tops since I didn't get it done last week.  Then I can get the roll of batting off my ...

Another quilted....................... from Exuberant Color

The flannel Hugs and Kisses is quilted, not without a few problems which I won't bore you with.  I'll get it trimmed today and cut the binding, which will probably be the same as the backing fabric.

I sewed 9 patches while I watched TV last night.  I laid all 4 of the orange ones out separately so you can see the variety that a mottled fabric creates.

My largest Columbine which is pink is getting big.  I'll have to check and see if the Columbines in the front have come up yet.  We're in for ...

Quilted and trimmed............. from Exuberant Color

I went down to the longarm before noon and quilted this flannel pinwheel quilt.

I did 6 big wavy lines in each 12" block from top to bottom.  I wanted loose quilting to keep the quilt really soft.

I got it trimmed right away too.  The plaid on the back is one of the Robert Kaufman mammoth flannels.  It is heavier weight than any of the flannels on the front of the quilt.  This quilt is so soft!  I need to find a binding fabric today.

Last night I got caught up on sewing all of the rest of the ...

Lots of background work in the basement............ from Exuberant Color

First thing yesterday morning I baked the chocolate chip cookies.  I had a question from someone in another country about my recipe so I thought I would show the package, not knowing if this is available in their area.

I just noticed something that I had not seen before.  At the bottom it says if omitting nuts to add 1 - 2 TBS of flour.  I will try that next time because most of my family prefers no nuts in cookies.

Here is the rest of the recipe for my reader who inquired about it.  Click on the photo for  a ...

More baking..................... from Exuberant Color

I had 3 sessions in the kitchen yesterday.  I baked the Kringlas in the morning, peanut butter cookies after lunch and mixed chocolate chip dough in intermissions during my TV time.  I'll finish the baking this morning.

I sewed some more strip sets to make 9 patches.

I only got one batting trimmed to length yesterday.  It is on the backing on the longarm now.

I found two Lungwort/Pulmonaria plants with blooms.  I thought about raking the leaves off the bed but there is possible snow predicted next Monday which means cold weather.  Yesterday I checked the temperature ...

Variety day................. from Exuberant Color

I had intended to spend more time with quilt related things yesterday but ended up with a variety of things needing attention.

Early in the day I started choosing pairs of strips to sew into 9 patches and last night I got some of the strip sets sewn.

I had errands to run in the middle of the day and didn't get to the batting cutting until later in the day.  I have batting cut for 2 of the 3 flannel quilts and will continue cutting for some others today.

I needed to start baking treats for my great-grandchildren ...

Backings for flannel quilts........... from Exuberant Color

Yesterday afternoon I cut the 2 backing pieces for the Hugs and Kisses flannel quilt.  I will press them today and sew the long seam.

A few days ago I pressed this backing and got it loaded on the longarm for the flannel pinwheel quilt.

I just wasn't ready to wrestle with this new 30 yard roll of Hobbs 80/20 batting yesterday.  Today I'll open it and get the batting cut for all 3 of the flannel tops and maybe pieces for a couple more quilts too.  Once I get it hoisted up on my double table ...

Finished times 2.................. from Exuberant Color

It's time for the official portraits and stats on 2 finishes.

Autumn Coneflower 2, made of batiks, finished at 62.5" x 78".  It has Hobbs 80/20 batting in it.  The binding is hand finished.

The backing is a burgandy with beige leaf outlines, a batik I bought many years ago, knowing I would make a quilt some day that would need it.

The bright flannel quilt was made with many small yardage pieces and some large scraps.  The cats, splotchy multicolor, and monkeys are Laurel Burch designs.  This quilt finished at 53" x 71".  It has Hobbs ...

More of the same............... from Exuberant Color

With two sessions of hand stitching I rounded the 4th corner and now just have most of one short side left to stitch on Autumn Coneflower 2.

Seven more strip sets for 9 patches were completed and now I have 12 sets ready to be pressed.  Then I can crosscut them and sew the 9 patch blocks.

I sewed the long seam in another flannel backing but didn't turn on the iron yesterday.  Now I have plenty of pressing to do.

Finally some quilting........ from Exuberant Color

I loaded my bright flannel quilt on the longarm after lunch yesterday and got it quilted.

I did freehand organic straight lines in both directions.  That means I quilted it one direction, unpinned it from the frame, turned it 45 degrees and re-pinned it on and did the lines for the other direction.  I got it trimmed last night so I'll look for a binding today.

I paired some batik strips and sewed the strip sets for a few more 9 patch blocks.  They need to be pressed before I cut them the other direction and make the blocks.

Sorting batik scraps............. from Exuberant Color

There were 2 bins of batik scraps on my tables in the basement.  I decided to go through and divide them by 'keep' and 'don't want'.

I think there might be a third box down there too and I'll look for that today.

This is a top view of the two boxes.  I need to use my yardage and stop using scraps that I don't care for.

All of the pieces had been pressed at one time so this is pretty much stacked flat pieces, not crumpled up and wrinkled so there is a lot in these ...

Second February 2024 finish............. from Exuberant Color

This quilt was made from a pattern I purchased, Interweave by Springleaf Studios.  Here is a photo of the pattern.  All of the black and whites are batiks and the red and orange prints are mostly regular quilting cotton prints with 2 Philip Jacobs fabrics and 1 Martha Negley fabric.  It is 57" x 81".  Binding is done all by machine, straight stitch finish on the top.

The backing is a batik I purchased on sale in 2018 in NC.  The batting is Hobbs 80/20.  The binding is the same Martha Negley print that is in the quilt top ...

# 3 finish for December 2023............ from Exuberant Color

I finally got the batik star quilt up on the double design wall.  The batting is Quilter's Dream cotton that I had a package of and it was thicker than I usually use so the quilt is heavy.  I finally resorted to using a chair to support the weight of it while I got the first 5 pins in the top edge and then it was pretty easy the rest of the way across.  It measures 73" x 99" now.  I forgot to take a photo with the backing showing so I'll add that photo later.

I took ...

Progress.......... from Exuberant Color

The seam was pressed and red bear print flannel backing was loaded on the longarm.  I also pressed the blue flannel for the other I Spy quilt and it is ready to have the seam sewn.  Maybe I can get the batting and top loaded and the machine threaded today.  Hopefully I will also be inspired to turn on the machine and do the quilting.

I had 3 sessions of hand sewing on the binding of the batik star quilt and now 3 sides are finished.  One long side to go.

Two readers alerted me to the name of the ...

Backing for one.......... from Exuberant Color

The batting is now cut for both I Spy Quilts.  I decided on Warm and Natural because it is flatter and I don't want much puff in the quilting on these quilts.

I also located backing fabric for I Spy 2.  The boys it is for are under 2 years of age so they should like this backing for a long time.

I started the binding on the batik star quilt a few inches before a corner and with just a little stitching time yesterday I managed to get a few inches past the next corner so one short ...

First 2 finishes for December 2023............ from Exuberant Color

Flannel log baby quilt is 38" square after finishing.  Hobbs 80/20 batting.

Backing and binding are Moda brushed fabric which is like flannel but more like the weight of regular quilting fabric.

Flannel 4" tumblers baby quilt is 39.5" square after finishing.  I cut the tumblers with my die cutter while cleaning up from making another flannel quilt last year.  It made for a fast quilt with pieces ready to use.  Hobbs 80/20 batting.

The backing and binding are the same as on the log quilt pictured above.

I got another quilt back from the longarm quilter ...

Organizing progress.............. from Exuberant Color

I got the batik orphan blocks grouped into matching sizes and used little clips to keep them together.  There were a few oddball size blocks between the sizes too and maybe some of them can be trimmed to match the smaller size.

There was a stack of 4.5" blocks too tall to clip.  Most of them are 4 patches, with a few plain squares and a few other pieced blocks.  They will make good filler areas whenever I get around to making an orphan block quilt.

I have 3 boxes of orphan blocks, 3 different types of fabric so ...

Organizing and playing......... from Exuberant Color

In addition to going through all of my books I'm still trying to get the basement area organization done.  I had a few blocks to put in the batik orphan block box so I decided to check on what was in there again.

There are some pretty ugly blocks in the mix and some I really love.  There were enough more blocks to change the design wall one more time but I have seen enough now.  I need to sort the blocks by size and clip them together before I put them all back.  I need a bigger box ...

First quilt top for October................. from Exuberant Color

I was hoping to have this top done in September but after I squeezed in the 65th high school class reunion I could see it wasn't going to happen.  Now I have a great start for October.

This is made of African fabrics and mottled batik (almost solid) fabrics.

I intended to find an African fabric for some alternate plain blocks but instead looked on my 2 shelves of multicolor batiks.  I know I got this batik on sale, deep discount, because it wasn't selling well.  I only had a yard so I got twenty 8.5" squares ...
