Good intentions and Good morning! from Charm About You

Cross stitch has been taking over as my favourite pastime recently. To be fair it's probably half and half with quilting, though I find I'm drawn to the meditative following of charts and making cross stitches after a day of work.

I purchased a few patterns this year and I'm working my way through them. The first one I completed is Good Intentions by Kathy Barrick. Its a lovely design and the sentiment is just so true of me.

Good Intentions by Kathy Barrick cross stitch, words read I myself am made entirely of flaws stitched together with good intentions, a lady holding an embroidery hoop and needle. There are scissor and star motifs and stacks of thread spools.

I made a few adjustments to the pattern and changed the colours slightly. The colours are a similar ...

Myriad Interpretations of Language: Collaborative Quilt Project from Goer

I’m a big fan of Sam Hunter (website -- IG) so when she put the call out for a community stitching project I opted in. I don’t generally do hand work, but the initial details assured us that it would be minimal and easy to complete.

The prompt arrived and I took a very literal, mathematical approach to it. In the moment, I wasn’t overthinking it at all. I was simply following the instructions.

I mailed my block from San Jose, California </p>

Granny Square finish from Charm About You

Finally a fully finished object! I got my Granny Square SAL finished and framed it in this quite dramatic frame.

I loved choosing the colours for this, picking out my favourites and calmly stitching along. One square a week was a relaxed pace.

I would have happily kept on stitching these squares, it's quite addictive and a really big piece full of granny squares would look amazing. Maybe one day.

With other projects to get back to though (and oops maybe start!), I stuck to four. Also I liked the idea of keeping it small within a bigger frame ...

Sunday Stash: a bit of everything from Charm About You

I've been enjoying a return to what started as my 100 day project, hand piecing my Merrow Croft quilt (pattern by Margaret Mew). If you haven't done any hand piecing before, I have a how-to with lots of tips in my hand piecing tutorial. Using some of my treasured hand printed fabrics by Karen Lewis and Lucy Engels, I'm enjoying the neutral cool vibe of these pieces.

A hand holding small pieces of fabric, being sewn together with a running stitch. In the background is a circle shaped quilt block that has been hand pieced. Surrounding this are more small pieces of fabric, thread and embroidery scissors.

So I'm using up my stash but I'm also adding to it...

Granny square stitch along from Charm About You

Sew alongs and stitch alongs are always great fun! I enjoy seeing people make a pattern their own or even if they follow the pattern exactly, it's nice knowing you're creating something with others and it helps keep you on track for a finish.

cross stitched granny square on linen fabric, under that is a magnetic stork needle minder with a needle resting on it

The most recent ones I've joined in with were a year long but the Fat Quarter Shop is doing a summer Great Granny Squared-Along that is cute and simple. With patterns designed by Lori Holt, you can make a quilt, crochet or cross stitch piece. There's something for everyone and they make ...

sunflowers from Charm About You

Like many of you I've sure, the war in the Ukraine has been a horrible shock and weighed heavily on my mind. As well as making donations to charity relief efforts, and there are excellent resources available online to research where to donate, the craft community responded with many designers creating patterns to donate their profits. There have also been calls to purchase digital items from creators on Etsy who are in the Ukraine, this is easy to do by selecting Ukraine in the shop location menu in filters. These may seem relatively small actions but it all helps ...

a vision kept in sight from Charm About You

Following on from my last post, I'm back to share my new word of the year and a very special project I created. It seems so late to say this but Happy New Year to you all, I am sending my very best wishes to you all for a marvellous, healthy and joy filled 2022!

In previous years I have created a vision board, usually on new years eve, often incorporating my word of the year. I had lots of fun collaging with decorative paper, magazine clippings and pictures to create my board. This year I stepped that idea ...

A year in the making : The fruits of plenty from Charm About You

It took a year...

How it started...

How it's going...

Done!

It's not often I complete something in a year, my work in progress pile can attest to that! This stitch-a-long is the third one I've completed from Modern Folk Embroidery, obviously I highly recommend his patterns and this was a joy to stitch. It was lovely receiving the next part of the pattern each month and I've really enjoying seeing all the other versions as they've been stitched on instagram #MFESAL2021, so many interesting colour combinations. The pattern is The Fruits of Plenty. Also ...

quilt label X gold needles from Charm About You

An important part of the process is quilt labelling. Do you label your quilts?

Despite not yet having a finish, the idea for a label came to me and I jumped right in! There's no point in waiting to create, might as well stitch when the mood strikes. Here I show you my process for making this label, share some favourite tools and there's a chance to win a jar of Hemline Gold needles.

Project QUILTING 12.5: You’re Crazy from Goer

This week's Project QUILTING challenge is You're Crazy, inspired by the "crazy quilt" movement of the late 1800s. I honestly hesitated a bit about participating, because I've become more aware of ableist language and I've tried to edit the word crazy out of my everyday vocabulary. Ableism is defined as discrimination or social prejudice against people with disabilities based on the belief that typical abilities are superior. It includes the use of ableist words, many of which people don't realize have an impact on people with disabilities. If this isn't a concept you're ...

vintage sewing set ~ scissor fob from Charm About You

A satisfying and useful little make, combining things I love and using up what I have - this scissor fob is keeping my scissors safe!

I have been so enjoying a lot of hand stitching time recently and my cross stitch obsession is growing. Counted cross stitch is so relaxing, I have to concentrate enough so that my mind is not engulfed in worries or to do lists (as it often is) and the patterns mean that even though you are repeating the same stitch over and over it doesn't get boring. Also you can create little projects like this ...

life is short you're capable from Charm About You

Life is short You're Capable hand embroidered on decorative pillow with tassels in the corners of the pillow and loose ribbon and thread spool next to it

I made a thing! The original plan was for this to be a pincushion but I like it too much to stick pins in it, so it's a decorative little pillow. I like just having it around, a nice reminder and message to myself.

I designed this embroidery pattern as a companion to my You're Capable cushion/mini quilt pattern, which was inspired by Gwen Stefani lyrics and created to give empowerment.

Life is short You're Capable embroidered on dot fabric with needle and thread still there and needle resting on a stork needle minder

It was a quick stitch, using couching with double strands and a single stand, and 3 strands for the back stitch with Aurifloss in # ???. It was ...

have courage and be kind from Charm About You

modern framed cross stitch with 'have courage and be kind' cross stiched in black on fabric with hand printed pink and yellow leopard print design in black frame

Finishing a project is such a joy! But then so is starting a project... and working on a project, no wonder I am always making ;)

This finish is a special one for a few reasons. The cross stitch kit is from Stitchsperation, I love her kits and had already completed one which you can see here. She hand paints the fabric and not only is that really cool but it means you get a unique piece of fabric to stitch on. I chose 28ct evenweave and as a change I stitched this in hand rather than using a hoop.

shapely rope basket from Charm About You

This was a 2020 finish but am just getting round to sharing it now. My hand sewn basket was a learning experience and the result truly has that handmade, rustic look. You are either going to love it or pity me!

There are plenty of tutorials out there for machine sewn and hand sewn rope baskets. I've made many machine versions but really wanted to try sewing one by hand. It has a different look that I really like and honestly I will make one again but here's what I found...

The base is really fun to stitch ...

handmade stitching extras from Charm About You

These are extras but could be deemed necessities. Each project is contributing to helping me stay neat and organised while stitching. I have been down the rabbit hole of flosstube videos on YouTube and decided to make a thread catcher mat and also try making a 'grime guard' for my new 11" Q-Snap frame. My 2021 cross stitch project needed a project bag to house the larger frame too (it would also be perfect for storing quilt blocks) so that's where it started. The slippery slope of making things to prepare to make things!

I searched through a lot ...

the sewing box (after) from Charm About You

I wish there was a before, I really thought I had taken a photo some time ago but it can't be found (maybe I didn't!). Anyway the after turned out well and hope you'll enjoy this look at my sewing box.

It's a cantilever sewing box that belonged to my Nan (paternal grandmother). Sadly she passed away last year and it's taken me a while to get to a point where I felt I could sort through some of her things. Over the past few years I went to stay overnight at her house quite ...

Love Thy... from Charm About You

neighbour X work in progress X cross stitch X Aurifloss

My current cross stitch project for the year is coming along well, there's been a little bit of unpicking but that is most often the result of late night stitching. The pattern is Love Thy Neighbour by Modern Folk Embroidery and I started stitching it as part of Jacob's Summer Stitch A Long. Summer may be nearly over but I am in no rush to finish. The original pattern is stitched in one colour but like my last finished cross stitch I enjoy making it my own and ...

carry around some quiet from Charm About You

This was part of my mum's Christmas present. I had this idea in my head, to combine some cross stitch and Kraft-tex to make a bookmark. This is really a very basic make but I'm pleased with how it turned out and hope it will wear well as she uses it. I know that Kraft-tex can actually feel better the more it's handled and it should still hold its shape, as it helpfully conceals the guts of the cross stitching.
