White Quilting 17, 18 from Virtual Quilter

The opposite of White Out, this is much nicer than looking at quilt designs during a power blackout!

(The best place I have ever been in during a power blackout was a chocolate factory! There was just enough light from the emergency lights to see what was on offer in he factory shop, and the aroma was beautiful.)

The first design for today would look better with a much narrower border … perhaps just a black binding.

I love the second one just as it is.

Well, perhaps I would change those big blobs into something with a bit more detail.

A Spoonful of Sugar 7, 8 from Virtual Quilter

Love it.

Love this one too … they remind me of applique quilts made a century ago.

Pieced, Patched, Pretty and Sashed 2, 3, 4 from Virtual Quilter

Every so often I stop playing with block designs, and play with sashing designs instead.

As you can see in these designs the sashing can be used as border designs too.

And then of course, you can add some blocks with some tricky bits pieced to form a frame around an applique.

Textile Inspiration Black Out 1, 2, 3, 4 from Virtual Quilter

Sometimes our power system lets us down, sometimes because a power pole falls down, and during one a few weeks ago I was on the computer playing with virtual quilt designs, and thought that it might be worth playing with some designs with the opposite of a white out, and so Textile Inspiration Black Out file was started.

Black on white background … a bit stark for me.

Black on old gold is more my style, but might try a couple of others.

Purple on white looks better than black, though not quite a blackout!

A light and a dark of ...

Extra Time Just to Get it Right from Quilty Folk

Do you remember the Big Kiss quilt? Over the winter I decided that it probably needed more attention and pulled it out of the finished quilt top drawers for further scrutiny. {Or maybe it wouldn't quit haunting me?} After much pondering, I finally decided to go for it. The applique that I decided on has been prepped and waiting for quite awhile, just patiently waiting their turn in the queue!

Big Kiss quilt top is finished!

It's kind of a bold looking border, but very simple in terms of hand work. Then of course,  I made it more ...

Five Patch Fragments OP 11, 12 from Virtual Quilter

Love it!

The second design looks almost boring after the first one.

If you are thinking about upgrading to Electric Quilt 8 now is a good time to do it.

Sewing Borders on the Shadow Star Quilt from Fret Not Yourself

Sisters are the perfect best friend.

Quilting

Unraveling on the edges of the completed borders drove me to attach the first three before finishing the fourth side. Here's the first side sewn.

First border sewn on Shadow Stars quilt top
First Vase and Vine border on Shadow Stars quilt

The next step was to sew the opposite side then to sew the third side, longer to accommodate the width of those border sides. An additional vine helps fill the space.

Adding third Vase and Vine border to Shadow Stars quilt

But there's a small problem. Someone stretched this side when creating the sketch. {I wonder who ...

Finally Adding Flowers from Fret Not Yourself

People overestimate what they can do in a single day and
underestimate what they can do in their whole lives.
~unknown but possibly Bill Gates

Quilting

With the vines and leaves finally sewn, it's time to sew the flowers. There have been several iterations as you can see by the "cut and paste" of the template under this border. After recopying the entire swag once, I wore out and simply cut the old flower out and taped a new version in. Why? Because the petals extended too far and ended at the edges of the border fabric.

The flower ...

Felicity Anderson Q’n’A 9, 10 from Virtual Quilter

Come fiddly applique blocks, some equally fiddly quilting motifs based on applique blocks … with a simple filler. That’s the way I like my real quilts.

My favourite is the second one of these two.

Getting Projects Prepped and Ready to Go from Quilty Folk

I've been trying to get some of the endless applique projects prepped. The list is a little overwhelming at the moment and I know from experience it helps a lot to have things ready to go. Plus, hand work is seriously calling my name of late. So soothing when the mood is right!

Ormes Inspired getting a word added on

First up was to finally settle on a word to add to Ormes Inspired. I've know for awhile that something needed to be done about that bottom left corner, but nothing ever seemed right. Last week I took ...

Never Ending Leaves and a Few Bud Bases from Fret Not Yourself

It is possible to read the history of this country as one long struggle to extend the liberties established in our Constitution to everyone in America.
~Molly Ivins

The US turns to healing our bodies and souls with the inauguration of President Joe Biden and Vice-President Kamala Harris tomorrow. I will be but early to watch. Let's commit to more than watching though. Let's become involved, especially in local matters and primaries, so horrors like these last few years don't happen again.

Both the 2016 and 2020 elections showed that the majority of Americans did not support ...

Red and Green OP 11, 12 from Virtual Quilter

Red and Green 35, 36 from Virtual Quilter

At long last my home decor is starting to turn red and green, with touches of gold, as trees, swags and wall hangings are escaping from storage.

Love the second design … mainly because there is room for quilting to shine around the applique blocks.

Figuring Out the Best Appliqué Prep from Fret Not Yourself

Do what you feel in your heart to be right for you'll be criticized anyway.

~Eleanor Roosevelt

Quilting

Whenever I appliqué it seems to need different methods. There are two older but excellent machine appliqué books in my personal library: Mastering Machine Appliqué by Harriet Hargrave and Traditional Quilts Today's Techniques by Debra Wagner.

Two books on a green cutting board
Machine appliqué instruction books

I drafted my patterns on graph paper then looked for something to reinforce it. The plastic on hand is either too thin or too small. But... there's a whole bunch of file folders from my shredding summer. Woo hoo ...

Fiddling with Flowers on the Shadow Stars from Fret Not Yourself

The cure for the ills of democracy is more democracy.
~Jane Addams

The US election results are in with joy for many of us but also sorrow that the vote was anywhere close. Much work remains to help minority communities, to reestablish science and belief in its research, and to rebuild faith with our democratic partners internationally. Hopefully we can all commit to considering the words we use and the meanings and intentions behind every word and policy.

Quilting

My Bright Patches 15, 16 from Virtual Quilter

I don’t think I would enjoy making up any more than four or five of the pieced blocks in this design, but would be happy to make up to four of each of the five pieced blocks … which just leaves the eight applique blocks.

I like the second design, but if I had to choose one of these two to make up I would make the blocks for the first, and add the applique border from the second.

Five Patch Fragments 18, 19, 20 from Virtual Quilter

Love the design, contrast is about right, colours not so great … but the design is fine.

My opinions of the second one are the same as the first!

I don’t like the last one a lot, but there are some interesting bits I will play with, so it was worth keeping.
