I've been a lot less active in the quilting community over the last few years, choosing to let quilting become just a hobby for myself, and instead focusing most of my attention and efforts on other endeavors. However, when Cheryl Brickey asked me to participate in a blog hop to promote her latest book, Just Two Charm Pack Quilts, I was excited to do it.
I've made a lot of Cheryl's patterns over the years so I knew it was going to be a good time. Her patterns are always clear, well-written, and the end results are ... read more- zen chic

Since I took a break from blogging during the Pandemic, I missed sharing some of my finishes with you, so I decided to have a little Baby Quilts Show and Tell.
In 2018 I started making a few baby quilts to put back for the great-grands, and only got two finished.
Last year ...
read moreIkat is a pattern by Brigitte Heitland featuring fabric from her Fragile collection, one of my favorite fabric collections ever. I've made so many quilts with it, including Fragile, Paradox, and Critical Sunshine, and that's just the ones I've finished quilting! What can I say, I'm a sucker for black and gold.
Ikat was one of those quilts that I really wanted to have, but not necessarily to make. Piecing this quilt was a royal pain, due to the jelly rolls. But once I was done with it, I really loved the quilt top, and I ... read moreThrow stuff on the wall and see what sticks… |
Sometimes when looking at fabrics, I fall pretty hard. Designer Janet Clare did some wonderful stuff for Moda with a line called Wordsmith. I've made several quilts simply because I love working with these fabrics. Grandson Sam has one of these quilts, and I can't even remember who has others. When I got low on one of these fabrics, I would look at Etsy and buy more. This line is way out of print, and it's time to simply let them go. I think I may have enough for one more quilt, not counting the one that ... read more
After the ultra-colorful and bright Glass Candies, I wanted to pick a quilt top with more subdued colors for my next finish. I decided on Paper Chain, which is a block-of-the-month quilt that I made last year.
The fabric collection I chose is Breeze by Zen Chic, and the layout is from the Quilt Block Cookbook by Amy Gibson. This quilt really gives me a Japanese vibe! I have never done free-motion quilting on a sampler quilt before, so this was a bit of a new experience. But at the end of the day, it's not that different from ... read moreI wanted to finish Bohemian Spark for Valentine's Day, and while I didn't quite make that deadline ... at least it's still February! Both the pattern and the fabric (Just Red) are designed by Brigitte Heitland of Zen Chic.
I was very excited to make this quilt, but it was certainly one of the tougher ones I've made. It was paper-pieced, which I usually love, but the pieces are huge, which made them more challenging to line up correctly, and to add to the difficulty, the edges of most of these blocks are bias. I breathed a ... read moreThis week’s Friday Finish is The Neighborhood Quilt. This was a quick and easy quilt and I just love how it turned out. The pattern is “The Neighborhood” (of course!) by Villa Rosa Designs. You can find the pattern here and it is available as a pdf download or a little “Rose Card.”
This pattern uses two charm packs plus background, border and binding fabrics. All of my fabric is from Moda’s Quotation line by Zen Chic. The fabrics I used are in my little Etsy shop here. The background, an off-white with gray and black dots is ...
While I’m working on current projects, I’m always scheming future ones. These fabrics are a Japanese linen - I’m not sure how they will quilt and wash. Their feel is so much different from the meaty softness of peppered shot cottons. But the colors...I love them.
During 2019 I participated in a one block a week sew-a-long with the Canadian Quilters Association - #52blocks52weeks. The weekly instructions were all in greyscale, which suited my scrap stash perfectly. At the beginning of 2020, with a couple of extra blocks, I put what I had into a layout with generous ...
read moreI've finally completed my last block-of-the-month of the year! Paper Chain is a paper-pieced block-of-the-month designed by Freshly Pieced. Out of the 4 block-of-the-months I've done this year, this one is perhaps the most traditional: 12 blocks, one block a month.
For me, fabric selection is always going to be the most challenging part of a quilt. This is why I like kits so much, but I decided not to do a kit for Paper Chain and instead curate my own fabric. I decided to use Breeze by Zen Chic. Paper piecing requires a lot more prep work ... read moreLast spring, I made a college graduation quilt for Haley’s boyfriend. When I showed it to my husband, he asked, “Is that for me?” He knew darn well that it was for Cameron, but I felt a twinge of guilt. I realized I hadn’t made a quilt just for Brad in several years. When I told him that I’d make him one for Christmas, he asked for an exact replica of Cam’s quilt. Even though it won’t be much of a surprise, I’m still excited to see him open his present next week. I ...
read moreIt's been 3 years since Brigitte Heitland of Zen Chic released her Fragile collection, and to this day it remains one of my favorite collections ever. I have made quite a few quilts with it, including Critical Sunshine and Paradox. And, it was because of Paradox that I have this new quilt.
Paradox was a quilt full of large flying geese made in the traditional way, and that meant I had a lot of leftover half-square triangles. I couldn't throw them away, so I decided to try to arrange them to see if I could come up with ... read morePick-Up Sticks is such a fun and unusual quilt for me. The original pattern is called On the Ball by Brigitte Heitland (of Zen Chic). I really liked the pattern, but it was made with the splice and insert technique which will be incredibly difficult on this scale. So instead, I made it with the applique technique. Details on how I made this top is here.
When it comes to quilting it, I decided to keep this one simple in concept. I extended each "stick" into the background space, and I love the way it divides up the background. I ... read moreThere's no question that Brigitte Heitland from Zen Chic is my favorite fabric designer. I have loved most of her collections, to the point of collecting them obsessively, but I was a little disappointed when Day in Paris first came out. But when I actually saw it in person, it began to grow on me, and when I saw X & + made with Day in Paris, I fell madly in love with it.
I really enjoyed working on this quilt because of the gorgeous fabrics, and I knew the quilting just had two jobs: play up the huge borders and ... read more- zen chic
