Rules of Homeward Bound Month 1 on Off the Wall Friday from Creations - Quilts, Art, Whatever by Nina-Marie Sayre

When I first started quilting, I thought art quilting was beyond my reach.  Through the years though I've taught myself how to make them.  Now, with the Homeward Bound Block of the Month quilt, I'm revisiting my roots.  When I decided to take on this project I gave myself some basic rules (yes, I'm a rules chick):

1.  Follow the Pattern, No Adjusting
2.  Use the techniques taught by the designer
3.  Use a new, controlled palette
4.  Finish each month on time
5.  Participate in the Quilt's Forum

So today I looked at the calendar ...

dotty bow ties finish from Making A Lather

Dotty bow ties is done. My first finish for the year is the first quiltville leader/ ender challenge from 2011 - 2012. This year, when the new leader/ender was announced, I decided, rather than start a new project/quilt, I would go back, and actually finish the ones I have already started. I have started each new challenge over the years, but have finished two.

72 x 72

12 yards of fabric

I used as leftover dotty fabric for the binding

I used 2 larger pieces of pink for the back. I free motioned circles on the longarm.

If I ...

Weekly WIP: Plain Sailing from Patchwork Sampler Blog

Every January I start a new blue and white quilt. Well, maybe not every January, but it seems that way. It must be the gray days, cold temperatures, snow, and ice that influence my January palette. As I was sewing Reflection, this year’s blue and white quilt, I remembered one I started a few years ago. That one is Plain Sailing by Janet Clare and unfortunately, it is still a WIP.

I still love this quilt. There’s just something about a million half-square triangles in a quilt that makes me swoon! The pattern is hard to find now ...

Back to Work on Off the Wall Friday from Creations - Quilts, Art, Whatever by Nina-Marie Sayre

Yes!  I finally did it!  Got into my studio to finish up the piecing of Rain, Rain.  It's funny, once I was motivated it just took a good afternoon to put the finishing touches on the composition.  I swear, this quick little project has gotten so out of hand! The more I worked on it, the more I wanted to work on it.  Next thing you know it looked like this....

I'm not doing any borders because I personally hate borders (grin).

The only thing left to do is sew up the columns and layer the top for ...

Just a Couple More Things... from Live a Colorful Life

As we close out 2022, this made me laugh.

I completed a total of 16 quilts this year--most of them projects that had been started years ago, many of them with precious blocks made by my friends. It's a good feeling to have the quilts completed and to the point where I can now enjoy them.

Here are some of my favorites, both completed and works in progress.
Of interest, I started tracking my fabric in 2022 with the goal of buying as little as possible and using as much as possible. Here are the final numbers:

Fabric in ...

dotty bow ties almost top from Making A Lather

I only have 2 more rows of dotty bow ties to add to the quilt. I am almost there. hooray

It is time to prepare for next year's phd progress projects. I had to chuckle when quilting Gail said if you have at least 12 UFOs, make a list. It guarantees my participation for many more years. How many? I fear, longer than I will live at this point. Is any one honest about the number of UFOs? I tell my friends one number, and my lists say another, and then, there is the husband number.... oh well, just ...

Moda Marbles - just sitting there... from Grandma's Red Needle

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas together with family or friends. We had friends over for dinner on Christmas Eve, which was really nice. Sunday was quiet, slept in and did some sewing in the evening.

We all (at least us quilters) know how important it is to always have the right colors in our stash, don't we?! ...and when we need that specific color, nothing matches! Right?! Since it is unlikely I'd use up those Moda Marbles any time soon, I've been pondering what to do with them. The first idea, as you can ...

boho heart finish and one monthly goal from Making A Lather

My boho heart quilt is finished in time for my one monthly goal for December 2022. I really like it, and I am glad to mark this off the list. Hidden in this quilt are a few vintage blocks, my orphan blocks that remind me of quilts past, and scraps from other quilters I admire.

72 x 74

12 yards of fabric

I used the top fabric in my backing pile. since it was colorful, and, I used the same fabrics as the background to bind it. I free formed swirls on the long arm for quilting. And thanks to ...

dotty progress from Making A Lather

I did a little Christmas sewing, and, I have three rows together of dotty bow ties. I have a few more sashings made for adding more rows.

It was a cold, quiet holiday. I had most of the food bought early, so that was not a problem. We spent the- too cold to do anything (-10) - time watching Christmas movies. It was fun. We didn't get to see our family. bummer. It was too dangerous for this old couple to be out and about. We are now at a balmy16 degrees with a slight dusting of snow and a ...

bow ties progress from Making A Lather

Dotty bow ties has been sewn into foursies. There are 8 in each row, so I am getting closer. I plan on adding sashings between rows.

My quilter friend Linda made this great  scrap quilt during our Friday sew. It uses 2 1/2 inch squares. She says it is a pattern in the scrap school quilt book. If there really was such a quilt as a scrap buster, this would be a good candidate.

Hope everyone is busy with Christmas plans and happy times.

bow ties from Making A Lather

I have been working on an old ufo, leader and ender challenge. It has every color in it. I started making little bow tie blocks for the 2012 quiltville leader/ender challenge. It has been on vacation a long time. All the blocks of 4 have been made, and I sashed each one on the side.

This week, I made twosies.

boho top from Making A Lather

I have made great progress on boho heart. Another day at the library, and, I was able to assemble the right section of the heart. I have had the left section together for some time.

I was inspired to bring the left section with me, even if, I wasn't sure how much I could get done at open sew.

Now my heart is complete, warts and all. What a relief to get to this point. There were 5 of us working on this at the same time. I am the last one to get it to this point. I ...

Boho heart progress from Making A Lather

I began assembling group 4 of boho heart blocks and was able to make the section. I had the room to lay it out at the library during an open sew.

I am getting close. I need to start sewing groups together.  I don't think I have room here, and, may have to wait for a trip to the library again. I blogged about the start here.

I saw this ghostie online and liked him. I haven't "crafted" in a while, but, bought the pattern. It was fun. The hardest part was finding all the tools and paints ...

one monthly goal - boho heart from Making A Lather

Group 3 is finished of the boho heart quilt. It doesn't look much different than the last post. I did get the whole group together in one section. I am ready for group 4. I want to make finishing boho heart my December one monthly goal. I think it is doable. I have had a cortizone shot in my thumb, and, was fitted for a splint. It is awkward but feels much better. I feel like sewing again, with some adaptions.

I have had a fun start to the Christmas season. Sometimes, I can't get motivated, but, this ...

boho blocks from Making A Lather

My quilt guild had an open sew at the library Saturday. I took  all my boho heart stuff, hoping to sort, and, organize, yet, again. I want to get this done. I feel like I am close, and, it is a real possibility. If, I stick to it, I can see it done in the next 2 weeks. I made these blocks and joined as much as possible together. These are from group 3.

I am looking at the 4th and last group of blocks to sew next.

friday group and bunnies from Making A Lather

One of my 5 quilts ufos is this little bunny quilt I started a few years ago. I opened the box, recently, and, discovered fabric and bunny blocks. At my Friday group, I used a jelly roll to make the solid sashing and a matching fat quarter bundle to make the squares sashing. I have the perfect border fabric for it in my stash. I wanted this for a baby quilt.

Judy surprised us with a finished boho heart top that is gorgeous. Now, I am the last one that needs to finish.

dotty from Making A Lather

I'm seeing dots. These are almost addictive...if there weren't so many. I like the secondary pattern, but, still think I will add another sashing when I join blocks. I make a few of these almost every morning. This was my choice for Bonnie Hunter's first leader/ender challenge. All I did was make the little bow tie blocks. Now, it is time to make a quilt top.

bow tie blocks are 3 1/2 inches

so fun

I really liked the yummy scrappiness of this quilt from the quilt show this weekend. I forgot to take ...
