White Quilting 10 from Virtual Quilter

Quilters don’t always cut up big pieces of fabric and join them back together.

Sometimes we use just two very big pieces of fabric and go straight to the quilting.

(If fact, the cutting up and joining back together part of the process is technically patchwork.)

Honest Fabric custom printed tops from Flying Parrot Quilts

The Disintegration of the Persistence of Artichokes is one of my favorite quilts I’ve made, and I’m often asked for a pattern. Unfortunately, as you can see from my process post here, that would be really hard, because it was in part improv pieced. (I do have a video on the paper piecing + improv process here.) However, I’m happy to now have this offered as a custom printed quilt top through Honest Fabric. Better yet, there are multiple color ways to choose from!

I have a few other designs currently available, too, including non-disintegrating versions of the ...

Quilting Block by Block 1, 2 from Virtual Quilter

The title up the top of this post says Quilting Block by Block 1, 2, but it is really the same design, different colouring.

Well, one colour changed!

The places which have no quilting lines showing would be filled in with a boring background fill in a thread to match the background fabric exactly!

Black and Gold Logs and Lilies 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 from Virtual Quilter

Black and Gold Logs and Lillies 1

A collection of layouts suitable for Log Cabin blocks, and some variations of lily motifs …

Black and Gold Logs and Lillies 2

… and time to play is all I need to design some virtual whole cloth Log Cabin quilts.

Black and Gold Logs and Lillies 3

Just turning everything inside out is interesting …

Black and Gold Logs and Lillies 4

… or turning just the lily inside out!

Black and Gold Logs and Lillies 5

Left my favourite for today until last.

Another five minute mid week Log Cabin retreat over, but there will be another one next week.

In the meantime I am going to make use of a couple of real quilts to keep warm until the sun comes up and you get to see these designs ...

Virtual Wholecloth 7, 8 from Virtual Quilter

Virtual Wholecloth 7

I love whole cloth quilts, but I doubt that I have the patience to make one.

Virtual Wholecloth 8

Doesn’t mean I have to stop designing them though!

Quilting with Gold 1 from Virtual Quilter

Quilting with Gold 1

Mmm, the gold thread seems to have turned to silver, but I still like the design.

Virtual Wholecloth Sirius 13 from Virtual Quilter

Virtual Wholecloth Sirius 13

If I ever make a whole cloth quilt it will have a simple boring background design between the more decorative motifs … just like the designs in this Sirius project file.

Timeless and Lesstime from Sew Preeti Quilts

Some quilts are timeless, like the one in the picture below.  This apple core quilt is displayed in the Smithsonian Portrait Gallery.  Hand quilted with Baptist fans, it is definitely beautiful and impressive.

Display from the Portrait Gallery, Washington DC

Someone must have used a cardboard template and a ball point pen to trace and cut each piece. That sure took a lot of time. The fact that it is displayed in a museum qualifies it as a timeless piece.

Of course, I was there!

I, on the other hand, make lesstime quilts. Here is the story of a lesstime ...

Virtual Wholecloth 6×6 1 from Virtual Quilter

Virtual Wholecloth 6x6 1

It looks like lace in places, instead of a whole-cloth quilt design!

For users of EQ I think it might be that I copy applique designs to create motif or stencil blocks, which means the shapes are closed … I will have to work out an easy way to open up the shapes. Sounds like a lot of boring, repetitive time at the computer, so maybe I will leave it until my next lifetime!

Maybe by then I will find a new title for this project file too!

Playful Pandas Whole Cloth Quilt from Needle and Foot

I don’t know about you but I am really lazy about getting my sewing machines serviced.  I procrastinate, put it off longer and longer with my usual excuse being ‘I clean out the bobbin housing all the time so it must be fine’. But oh my gosh, think about how often I use these machines of mine.  The poor things need to be taken care of!

When my smaller Janome refused to stitch more than two inches without giving me grief, I realized it was time.  I took it to a woman in town who is a whiz with ...

Snowmen Express from Sew Preeti Quilts

After Esmeralda, which was a herculean effort, I wanted to do as little as possible.
Time to reward myself :-D

Fabric Shopping!!!

The Nursery Rhymes fabric will make the backing of my October OMG quilt.

Windham Fabrics Nursery Rhymes
I knew I had to have this orange striped fabric.

Balloon Stripe Michael Miller Fabrics
I will most probably use it as backing and will use the diagonal lines to quilt from the back.

Jumping and Munching Sheep

I also got these sheep and look at those plump farm animals.

Plump Animals

I fell for these snowmen and ordered immediately.

Quentin’s Quilting 7 from Virtual Quilter

Quentin's Quilting 7

Not a lot of quilting, but with our modern wadding we don’t need to quilt every quarter inch.
