Pandemic Porch Quilt Show, Days 36-39: Airplanes, Civil War, Play Castle, Flower Power from Gefilte Quilt

Day 36: Airplane Blanket This family favorite was made for my kids, in the late 90s, from a delightful print of animals flying airplanes.

The border features consecutive yellow triangles, called "flying geese," made into giant arrows with the help of a multi-colored stripe serving as each arrow's shaft.

Day 37: A Very Civil War
Our country survived the Civil War, and I hung this war-era quilt on November 3, just before the election, as a reminder to vote!
I found these blocks in a rural antique shop in upstate NY in the early 90s - there was a big ...

Kimonomomo Library List Part 2 from The Ardent Thread

Sashiko and Boro reference books – hard to find/out of print editions worth seeking out

Three lovely books for visual and text reference. One in Japanese, and two in both English and Japanese. These are not how-to books, but beautiful resources for getting a feel for sashiko, kogin, and boro textiles in historical context.

Links provided were valid on Amazon at the time I wrote this, but as these books are out of print they may not be available or may be ridiculously expensive. I’ve provided ISBN numbers for the first two you can use to search for these ...

Vintage Quilt Blocks from Magpie Quilts

Often I get requests to finish something started by another quilter from the past and this year I received a collection of pre-cut stars and some assembled blocks from a client's grandmother.

I was unable to use the blocks that were already pieced together as the center points didn't match up, they weren't all square and they didn't lay flat.
I was really sad that I wasn't able to as someone had made a lot of effort to match up solids and prints to make a large quilt.
So I took the pieces that weren ...

Pandemic Porch Quilt Show, Day 20: Rolling Pansies from Gefilte Quilt

I made this quilt in the 90s, finishing the work of an unknown quiltmaker.

It started as a flea market find: a metal cookie tin, full of petals and leaves. Many petals were beautifully turned under with a lovely, even basting stitch in thick white thread. I couldn't bear to take the maker's stitches out, so I left them in place whenever possible.

This "pansy" is a traditional quilting motif, from the 1930s I think. The fabrics - primarily calico florals - look like they're from the 1960s. Each flower has six components, 5 petals, plus one leaf. The ...

Sunday Quilt Inspiration: vintage quilts from Fleur de Lis Quilts and Accessories

I'll be honest, I'm sort of out of ideas for SQI. I'm sure more will come to me at some point, but honestly, it's getting more and more difficult. Yes, I have a running list. It's down to some of the really strange brainstorming ideas. Yes, SQI is always running "somewhere" in the back of my brain. (That's probably where the strange ideas come from. Perhaps we shouldn't go there.)

Anyway, in desperation--it is Monday morning, after all--I'm just going to post pictures of quilts. Old quilts, because they don't get ...

From Vintage Linen Stack to Quilted! Red and White Bliss from Gefilte Quilt

When I was a mere youth, in my 40s, I still believed I would live forever, so I bought a lot of vintage linens and embroideries at my favorite flea markets and thrift shops. Over the years, I accrued quite the collection.
Now, a zillion years older, the pandemic quarantine has given me the time, space, and motivation to stitch some of my best old linens into this new 79" x 82" quilt. Front:

The center is a spectacular linen tablecloth. I quilted around all the white foliage (but not close around every detail.)

At the center, I placed this ...

I’ve Been Nuno Felting from Eric the Quilter

I was in Minnesota for the past 2 weeks, just running amok… well, not really running, and not really amok either. I just visited some people, and hung out at my friend’s house most of the time. Lot’s of outdoor walks, and socially distanced brunches. It was lovely.

Now, while I was at my friend’s house, we made some Nuno felted scarves. If you don’t know what Nuno felting is, here’s the quickest answer: it’s when you take loose feltable fibers and embed them in sheer fabric. Now of course, I wouldn’t just ...

Bee Well from Michelle's Romantic Tangle

Sill here, still stitching, still doing a lot of reading, and still not managing to take pictures of finished projects to post them. That's why there was no mid-year totals post this year. Well, that and the fact that there weren't a lot of finishes by the end of June.

I did  finish Bee Well, a free pattern by The Blackberry Rabbit. It would have been a quick stitch, but I had unexplainable trouble with the wings and wound up doing one of them three times. They're probably not perfect, and bees probably do have perfect wings ...

Delightful Doilies and Linens from the Mid Atlantic Quilt Show from Telling Stories Through the Needle's Eye

A couple of weeks ago, Teri and I (Kara) were able to attend the Mid-Atlantic Quilt Show. We go there yearly, as it falls right before The Academy of Appliqué. It is a small show, but it usually has a great variety of quilts, and this year was no different. One exhibit in particular became our favorite, as it gave us lots of great ideas for our very large doily collection. This exhibit was created by Nancy S. Breland and was called Exploring Vintage Linens. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did!

Vintage Four-Patch from Becca's Crazy Projects

This is what my cutting table looks like most of the time. I move on to the next project and leave a pile of leftovers to put away later. This slows down some of my creativity, but not enough to keep me from doing it again. I had a bunch of strips and squares leftover from my Star Storm Quilt. I decided to trim down some of those leftovers to make some simple four-patch in four-patch blocks.
First, I made a bunch of smaller (4.5" by 4.5") 4-patch units.
Then I joined some to make bigger blocks (8 ...

Coffee, Tea...or Me? from Appalachian Quilts

There is just something about a vintage tea towel that makes any farmhouse kitchen spring to life.  Some of you who have been following my blog for a while know that I made all six of our girls a set of vintage tea towels for Christmas.

We are vending at the Shindig in April, so I decided some vintage tea towels were in order.  (I'll also be selling them on the website.)  This weekend I started stitching some out.  I like this linen look, but I'm also doing some waffle towels.  They are a little sturdier, depending on ...

{Estate Sale Temptation} Pearl and Earl in PINK! from Michelle's Romantic Tangle

You know how sometimes an idea makes it into the corner of your mind and just won't leave? That's what happened with the black and white applique plates I found back in February. A few months later I found the original pattern in an old craft pamphlet.

And on Sunday I found another set of the plates....

They're way too pink for my taste, but it was the last hour of the last day of the sale and everything was super cheap. So they live with me now and if I find another inexpensive pair they're ...

Papir og tekstil from Iinas Sewing Machine Poetry

I Found the Pattern for Pearl and Earl! from Michelle's Romantic Tangle

Remember these two plates that I saw at an estate sale and didn't buy?

I  found the pattern! Or what I suspect is one of many versions of the pattern since the one I found was published in 1959 and I've seen a sources that dates plates like this to the 1920s.

It's honestly not much of a pattern at all, is it? I couldn't bring myself to spend a dollar for the plates I found, but now I'm wanting to make a set of my own. And a bunch of other things from the ...

When the Unknown Surprises You! from Telling Stories Through the Needle's Eye

As we have shared in the past, Teri and I (Kara) are novice quilt collectors. We started with a few quilts that we inherited and picked up a few here and there as we wander the antique malls—one of our absolute favorite things to do together! A few of those inherited and purchased quilts have been shared on the blog (you can read about them by clicking on the links at the end of this post). Over here in Germany, there are not many antique quilts to be found, so I have formed a habit, albeit not necessarily a ...
