Triangles again.............. from Exuberant Color

I wanted to hear the weather report at 5 p.m. yesterday so I sewed triangles while I waited.  This is part of the assortment for the center panel of Fonthill, my long range project.  This is about half of what I need and all of the rest I need will have to be lighter colors.  Some of these are leftovers from a previous project.

I mowed the front and one side yard in the early evening.  I noticed the Lemon Lily is tipped over.  It looks like some animal was laying down in that area.

It seems like my ...

Prep time................ from Exuberant Color

This is laying on a table in the basement almost ready to load on the longarm.  I cut the two lengths of backing (black with leaves batik) and trimmed the batting to the correct length.  I need to press the backing pieces and sew the seam now.  Here is a full photo of this quilt top.  This one will take up almost the whole length on my longarm frame.

I have completed 12 more pinwheel blocks for the Kaffe Fonthill quilt.  Seeing these together is making me want to make a whole quilt top of pinwheels.

Just when I figure ...

More light blue................ from Exuberant Color

I see lots of light blue in the pinwheels and I didn't have any more cut.  I went through the stack of quarter yard or less blue batiks and found a bunch to cut.  Maureen and I both decided that with little 2" triangles that batiks would probably work better than most Kaffe prints.  The one in the book is made with stripes and small prints and maybe some solids.  There is one Philip Jacobs fabric in this group and I have already included a couple Kaffe prints in previous pinwheels.

Earlier in the day I sewed 5 pinwheels ...

16 years................. from Exuberant Color

16 years ago today I started writing my blog, my online diary.  I'm still having fun so plan on seeing more of my quilts and gardens.

The only sewing I did yesterday was parts for the Kaffe Fonthill quilt.  I now officially am half finished making pinwheels.  I have all of the 160 single border triangle squares sewn now.  I probably should cut the wide borders from the stripe fabric and start putting some of this up on the design wall.  The only drawback is that I have a ceiling fan in this room so I could forget to ...

Rain, finally................. from Exuberant Color

Finally our area got some rain, over an inch.  In Chicago and suburbs however they had as much as 9" of rain  Since the ground is so hard and dry it didn't soak in and it flooded streets and highways.  The first ever NASCAR street race was in Chicago Sat. and Sunday so there were delays and in the end they had to shorten the main race to be done before dark.

In the pot I planted Nasturtium seeds.  There were 13 seeds and I think I got 6 or 7 plants out of them.

My friend Patty sent ...

Checking the proportions............ from Exuberant Color

The center panel of the Fonthill quilt will be made with lots of miscellaneous leftover triangle squares so I took a pile of them and did a mock up on the design wall to check out the proportions.  The center panel will be 16" x 28", a 12" difference in width and length.  All of the rest of the borders will add 24" to each side and top and bottom for a 64" x 76" quilt top.  If I decide I want it 80" in length then I need to add 2 more squares to the length.  Meanwhile I keep ...

A little sewing, a little doing nothing.......... from Exuberant Color

Before the sun came around to the west side of the house, I sewed some pinwheels from the group of triangles I went through yesterday.

Then I baked some Aunt Ethel's Kringlas and shared with my sister-in-law and brother-in-law.  We had a nice chat on their screened in porch with a nice breeze flowing through.

I find it kind of strange that in a very dry early summer I have the earliest tomatoes I've ever had.  The large one is an Early Girl and the small one a 4th of July variety.  It was in the mid 80s ...

Triangle boost................... from Exuberant Color

There is a 3 tier storage box in the basement where I put leftover triangles and squares sewn.  I have all sizes and 2" finished has the most pieces in it.  I sorted through them yesterday and pulled out matching sets of 4 sewn squares and also sets of 4 triangles to sew that I think might work for the Fonthill quilt.  I found enough suitable fabrics for 18 pinwheels and a few singles that might work in the center panel.

This is the section where I added 3 plants.  The one on the bottom left doesn't show too ...

Sewing triangle, pulling weeds............. from Exuberant Color

Since the morning started out cloudy yesterday, my plan was to go out and plant 3 new purchases.  By the time I was ready to do it the sun was out and that area doesn't get fully shaded until after 4 p.m.  I decided to sew triangles until I ran out of bobbin thread.

There were four of each variety except the bottom right which there are 8.  These are for the Fonthill quilt.

I have been doing some refiguring the shape and size of this quilt.  The center panel is 15 squares down which necessitated putting in ...

Pinwheel progress........... from Exuberant Color

It was a good day for pinwheels yesterday.  I cut some more triangles while I was in the basement doing laundry. Then last night I paired some more pieces and sewed for 3 hours.

None of the pinwheels have been pressed yet so I grouped them all in  columns for a photo before they come off the design wall.  I have enough made for one double row border.  There are 3 more of those borders plus 4 shorter single row borders so there is a long way to go. (About 90 more needed.)

I have spent the last 10 years ...

9 more pinwheels from Exuberant Color

I thought I would get more sewing done yesterday but I am still moving fabric around and spent most of the day on that.  I'm making decisions as I go, no master plan made ahead of time.  I'm hoping to get my flannels and African fabrics out of storage boxes and onto shelves.  I did manage to get 9 of the pinwheels sewn that I planned on Saturday.

We only got one tenth of an inch of rain yesterday morning.  It was 59 degrees most of the day.  I went out to check on the 2 tomatoes that ...

Cutting and pairing, no sewing............. from Exuberant Color

I watered plants, pulled some weeds, filled bird feeders, did a load of laundry, and cut some more triangles for the next 16 pinwheels for the current quilt project.  I think I will go through my Australian fabric scraps and cut some triangles from them too.

There is rain predicted for today but they have changed it from 1.5" predicted about 5 days ago to now maybe .25" or if we are lucky, .5".  The grass is brown and crunchy.

Busy day, a little sewing............ from Exuberant Color

I was concentrating on low contrast pinwheels yesterday.  I started them early in the afternoon and finished them last night.

This is probably the last photo I'll show of the mock up.  I'll just keep making blocks and keep them all in a box until I reach 134 total.  I may eliminate some and make some new ones once I get to the design stage.

I have been waiting for the day with a perfect comfortable temperature and a north breeze and yesterday it was here.  I have had a mess in my potting area in the garage ...

Plugging away.............. from Exuberant Color

I chose some more fabrics to cut into 2" triangles for the Fonthill quilt.  These are for the pinwheel blocks that form the last border.  There are 132 pinwheel blocks in the quilt as is and with my alteration in shape it might be another 4.  The outside border is more dull than bright with soft blues, browns, beiges, soft golds and more.

I sewed the first 2 pinwheels last night.  At least 130 to go.

While in the basement I moved 2 shelf units and vacuumed the area under and around them.  They hadn't been moved for over ...

Pinks and oranges................. from Exuberant Color

I sewed roses and soft med. purples to the dark purple dotted batik yesterday.  Then I looked for some orange and red-orange fabrics to add.  In the photo I'm working on the dark single row borders first.  Any pieces not used in them might end up in the mix for the center section.

I keep looking at this batik trying to decide if it will work.  I'll probably go ahead and cut a strip of it and die cut some triangles.

I went out before noon to see what is blooming.  The yellow Evening Primrose is just starting ...

Many triangles from Exuberant Color

If my calculations are correct I need 2104 two inch finished triangles for the Fonthill quilt.  I went through the box of large batik scraps and pulled colors I thought would work and cut for over an hour.

Since I was cutting single layers of a lot of the fabrics and I could cut 6 layers at a time with my die cutter, I needed to sort the triangles into piles of like fabric.  I have started with batiks but will add some Kaffe fabrics in soon and also other regular printed quilting cottons.  I will likely overcut so I ...

floor triangles bits from Making A Lather

Underneath my sewing machine, I keep a basket of triangle cut offs and bits. While I was cleaning the floor of my sewing room, I needed to handle a bit of a mess they created. They play while I am not looking, and walk about the room at night.  Corralling them was easy, but not playing with them was impossible. Mostly they are smaller than a 2 1/2 inch hst. Some are very tiny.

I know I want to make ( someday)  a basket quilt with 2 inch hsts, and, I want to make ditch lillies (bonnie hunter) with 1 ...

Early Peonies and more............. from Exuberant Color

The earliest Peonies to bloom are always the same plant.  In the morning on Sunday they were tight buds and by evening there were a couple blooms. Yesterday I discovered a bunch of blooms.

None of the other Peonies are opening yet but after two 80+ degree days and another today they might start.  This plant has lots of buds yet to open.

I finished the layout of the pastel quilt and sewed it all together last night while I watched TV.  While working on the layout I gave up on the idea of not having the same fabric near ...

Heading toward finishes............. from Exuberant Color

I pressed the pastel blocks on Saturday so yesterday I tried 2 layouts.  I can see that the half drop is not working so I'll work on the straight row layout.

I sewed seven more star blocks to add to the 8 I sewed on Saturday night.  I have a couple more cut but will work on cutting all of the rest that I need and sew all 19 blocks and get this top sewn together.  30 blocks were already sewn and in the box with the solid color triangles.

The scent from my lilacs has been coming in ...

Triangles everywhere, all at once from Ellyn's Place

I just realized I left you hanging. I never shared my completed Improv Triangle Sewalong quilt.... although I did share some of my process here. Well it's finished! Introducing, Triangles everywhere, all at once...

The improv triangle units were made using the process Nicholas Ball spells out in his book, Inspiring Improv. I used fabric I had painted with my gel plate and acrylic paints for the triangles and assorted teal, aqua and orange solids from my stash.

When it came time to quilt, I went a little bananas! It is all walking foot quilted on my domestic machine ...
