Block number 3............. from Exuberant Color

Bear Paw block number three is sewn.  I love the leaf print in the large squares.  I think I have a little piece of every color that it came in.

Then I switched to working on the older project.  There was one panel sewn about 20 years ago so I'm continuing to piece panels the same size.  There are 4 of them on the design wall.

I moved the left panel to the top right in this photo.

This is all of the rest of the parts that are sewn.  There are lots more of the triangle fabrics already ...

Third time is a charm.............. from Exuberant Color

On my third try I found the perfect brown for the claws on this Bear Paw block.  The other 2 choices just weren't quite right.

The first two blocks are sewn.....

...and I started working on a layout of a third block.

First finish for October.

I'm having a hard time getting a straight on shot of this Floral Colorwash #7.  This was the best one.

For my own record I'm trying to keep track of the backing fabrics that I have used.  This quilt is about 30" square.

While the design wall was empty and the ...

A little progress on 2.......... from Exuberant Color

I sewed the second section of this older project.  It is still in 2 pieces.  I need to sew a duplicate of both to be turned upside down and put above these.  Then all of the rest of the pieces will be added to the sides to make it wider.  Right now it is 32" square.

I die cut more pieces for the Bear Paw blocks.  Now I need to concentrate on cutting the triangles so I will have more variety to work with.

I changed thread on my machine to match the binding for the colorwash so I'll ...

Working on three............ from Exuberant Color

I steam pressed the colorwash wallhanging from the back side and then trimmed it.  I found a binding fabric and cut the hanging sleeve.  Now there is no excuse for not finishing it.

Next I decided to sew the half square triangle for the Bear Paw block that I was happy with.

The claw part of the block is sewn so I might as well go ahead and sew some more.

And now the first block is sewn.

I think I'm going to change out some parts on the other Bear Paw block so it remains on the design ...

Finally focused................ from Exuberant Color

It took me a couple days after all of the packages were mailed to get focused on what needs to be done.  Since yesterday was a cooler day between 2 hot days it was time to get outside.  I planted 4 of the Sedums (that were in pots) along the front left side of my house.  They don't look like much now because they were all parts of plants but they should look good next year.

In the morning I went to the back garden and checked on the Sedums that I transplanted out there in May.  The blooms ...

Quarter square triangles.......... from Exuberant Color

I managed to procrastinate one more day for sewing on the Matrix borders.  Yesterday turned out to be grocery shopping day, 2 places.  I went early to one, then a zoom call, and then the second place.  With the lack of rain I spent some time watering plants and bushes.

I have been cutting quarter square triangles from scraps and sorted all of the pink/red/orange ones.

I will use some in the Kaffe orphan block quilt I started to plan here.  Everything has blue, lavender, red and pink in it and I will stay with that theme.

This ...

Cutting triangles............... from Exuberant Color

Finally the humidity has dropped and cool temperatures by night time.  Windows open again.

I'm continuing to cut up my Kaffe chunks into usable shapes.  I started with the chunks and strips that were too narrow to cut anything bigger than 2" finished and I cut all half square triangles yesterday.  Last night I started sorting them and sewed one batch.

Why do I like triangles so much?  Because you can do so many different things with them.  No plans yet, just lots of sewing ahead....and more cutting today.

Economy block playing........... from Exuberant Color

I cut some more of the large triangles and pieced some more Economy blocks.  I put them up on the design wall in a straight setting.

I tried the offset layout but I think all of the large triangles would have to be one value to work well, like all light or all dark.  I am not sure this quilt is working well and maybe the blocks will be used as a border or something else.  Meanwhile I need to get out today and mow the grass while it is only around 70 degrees and low humidity.

Speaking of grass ...

Economy blocks................ from Exuberant Color

I just didn't feel like turning on the iron so I could continue on my star quilt so I started something new.  A week or so ago I showed the pieces I was die cutting for 12" Economy quilt blocks.  Last night I went through the quarter square triangles and found all of the sets of 4 alike.  There were 28 so I took out the stack of 6.5" squares to pair with them.

I pulled squares of all different fabrics than those in the quarter square triangles.

Next I paired the triangles with the squares.  Now it ...

A better photo................ from Exuberant Color

I took my Kaffe orphan blocks off the design wall in the basement so I could get a better photo of this quilt top.  It measures 60" x 84".

For a little perspective here it is waiting to be photographed on a 96" wide x 84" tall double design wall.

I decided to get a photo of the Annabelle Hydrangea bush in case it rains.  As I watched the news and weather last night they were still undecided if we were going to get 1.9" of rain or none at all.

I planted one Canna bulb and it has ...

Playing at the design wall.......... from Exuberant Color

This is the new fabric that I think goes very well with the star blocks.  Simplest solution would be to use it for sashing and be done.

When I was trying ideas last year I was using a single row of squares as sashing.  Now I'm trying double rows.  This was my first idea.  Ok but a little chunky.

I changed the center to triangles instead of squares.

Then I switched the direction of the triangles to point out instead of in (as in photo above).  I only changed triangle in the center area, the ones out at the ...

Reviving an old project............ from Exuberant Color

I continued on with my pressing and cutting today and didn't even turn on the sewing machine.  I took down the last completed quilt top and got out these 6 blocks that I made early last year.  I got stumped at the sashing and just put it away.  I'm going to finish it this more indecision.  I have lots of the triangle squares and plain squares to play with and also a new fabric that I may work into it.

Two of the plants in my porch pots have really taken over.  The poor geraniums are ...

Fun in the scrap patch.................. from Exuberant Color

I had a fun day yesterday going through the box of scraps that I define as anything smaller than a quarter yard.  Small scraps and narrow strips are in a different box so these were sizeable chunks.  I cut mostly quarter square triangles in 2 sizes, 4" and 6" finished.  This is the 6" quarter square triangles paired with the 6.5" squares that I had in another box (a box of mostly squares cut years ago).

This is what they will look like when they are sewn together.

Then I cut some 6" finished half square triangles from 4 ...

Saturday sewing............... from Exuberant Color

I finally stuck with it and got the insert strips sewn on and then designed the second border and got both of them sewn on too.  I couldn't get it high enough up on the wall to get the bottom edge off the floor.  I don't do stepstools or ladders especially when it would mean over reaching or moving the stool at least twice.  I need to move some things off the wall in the basement and get a better straight on shot.  It measures 60" x 85" now.   The binding will be the dark stripe too.

I ...

Some sewing, a fabric audition.............. from Exuberant Color

I finally sewed the one border strip together and took it to the basement with a pile of other patchwork to press.  It never made it past this table but I'll get it done today.

I had 2 different colorations of the stripe I'm thinking of using for the insert strip between stars and border row.  I was convinced Iiked the lighter one until I found a piece of the darker one and now I'm not sure.

This stripe runs horizontal so I need to cut it with the lengthwise grain to get the stripe going the ...

Sewing, pressing.......... from Exuberant Color

I played around with an idea for the strip that will go at the top and bottom of this quilt top.  Then I took the big star blocks to the basement and pressed them and finished sewing them together into one big piece.  When I brought it back upstairs I hung it a few more inches to the right so the border didn't line up.  Since it was a real stretch to get it up as high as I did I decided not to take it down and move it to the left for this photo.  I'm going ...

Some progress.......... from Exuberant Color

It got up to 89 degrees yesterday.  I only have one window A/C for 1800 square feet right now so the house isn't very cool.  I had both units taken out when painting trim happened last fall and one was old and discarded. The other one is doing the best it can.  Hopefully I'll have a second unit put in soon.  I didn't have much energy yesterday but I got the last star designed after lunch.

I decided last night to sew the final block but none of them have been pressed yet.

The tomato plants ...

3 stars sewn............ from Exuberant Color

It was a hot day here yesterday 87 degrees, 91 in Chicago.  The humidity is still low for a couple more days and then we will be both hot and humid.  High 80s and low 90s predicted for a week more.

I managed to get the other 2 stars sewn so now I'm ready to design the last one.  I'll sew the 4 stars together and then design the 2 rows for both the top and bottom of this quilt.

3 stars.............. from Exuberant Color

On the design wall: I decided I could sew each of the stars separately and just wait to press the final seams when I know the final arrangement.  The two designed stars will probably get sewn today and then I'll design the last one.  I'm loving the secondary pattern with this one.

The red Weigela is in full bloom now.  I see I have a maple tree growing up the middle of it so I'll go out with the big clippers and cut that down.

The white peonies remind me of  a swan.  I have at least ...

More stars?............ from Exuberant Color

The star layout got a lot of votes yesterday so I decided to start another star below it.  Now my options are: 2 stars with 3 rows of zig zag on each side and 2 rows on top and bottom OR 4 stars with 2 rows of blocks on top and bottom, maybe a zig zag, maybe some other configuration.  Since the star is 30" and 60" is my preferred width of throw quilt 2 stars across and 2 stars down would work.  Then to make it 80" long the added rows top and bottom are necessary.

My Hardy Geranium ...
