Thrifting Scores and Bargain Shopping from From My Carolina Home

Thrifting scores were good in July.  I made it to several estate sales too, picking up a bargain or two.  This haul was found on a thrift store hop with a thrift junkie friend.  We found the relocated Salvation Army store, and I got the pumpkin plates, the Tommy Hilfiger purse and the Coach shoes all for under $10.  The emery boards and the little sample size Clinique goodies will go in the Safelight bags.  The video was going to go into a British Films basket, but it turned out to be a Region 2 that won’t play here ...

Thrifting Fabric from Needle and Foot

About a week ago, our local guild sent out an email to members stating a seamstress in town was retiring and having a sale. She wanted to clear out her fabric and supplies as she planned to downsize to a smaller home. I am sure you knew I would be sure to go check it out. The woman was both a garment maker as well as a quilter. Her shop was large and there was tons and tons of fabric.

By the time I got there much of the quilt fabric had been sold. But I was not really interested ...

Thrifting June from From My Carolina Home

This has been an awesome month for finds at the thrift stores and estate sales.  I have plans and ideas now for more fun things to do with all these goodies.  Starting out, I couldn’t resist these chicken napkin rings.  They are actually a cloisonne with iridescent gold highlights.  There were seven of them, which I prefer to think of as a set of six with an extra instead of a set of eight missing one. (No, Kevin, you cannot have them, LOL!!!)

Odds and Ends, and Quilting Goes Couture! from From My Carolina Home

Next up on the frame is another Hurricane quilt.  This top was sent to me by sweet reader Phyllis Donohue (who is in her 80s!), a lovely patchwork with gold sashing.  I loaded it, but before I could really get to quilting, something happened.

Odds and Ends at FromMyCarolinaHome.com

I twisted my knee somehow, not once but twice, and pulled at least two ligaments.  I put myself into a compression brace for a couple of days, but that wasn’t doing the job, so now I have a bigger brace.  It is getting better, but activities are curtailed for a bit as I am spending ...

Thrifting Scores for April from From My Carolina Home

The thrift stores yielded only a few good items over the past couple of months, but they are treasures!  I need more tops to wear with jeans and shorts, as most of my wardrobe is still work wear and a bit too much for casual days.  This French inspired top was cute and fit nicely.  It does have a bit of bling, which suits my sparkly side.  I got it the same day as the shoes.

I almost never find shoes at the thrift store as I have a little foot, size 5-1/2.  When I spotted these beauties – never ...

Thrifting February from From My Carolina Home

A few scores at the thrift store this month have prompted me to do a bit of cleaning out.  Someone evidently has my style at the boutique in the thrift store, as I found several designer quality things in my size recently.  I love White House Black Market clothes, and it is nice to see Ann Taylor Loft and Liz Claiborne as well.  At just $5, so how could I resist?

I have been actively trying to add more prints in my wardrobe as I tend to buy solid shells and black cardigans.  These two pieces with a bit of ...

Thrifting, Decorating and Sewing More Christmas Fun from From My Carolina Home

This post is a hodgepodge of a lot of ideas and fun finds, almost too much for one post, but each subject isn’t enough for one.  So, enjoy reading a bunch of different ideas, all pulled together.  First, it is fun to find special things at the thrift store, like a treasure hunt when you don’t know what the treasure might be.  Recently, I came across a mug that looked really familiar, the one on the right in the picture below.  It was 50-cents.  I loved the sleigh design with the cardinals, but I didn’t need another ...

Thrifting Scores for November from From My Carolina Home

Checking out my favorite thrift store, the Blue Ridge Humane Society store, I found these beautiful Japanese rice bowls at one of my recent visits.  I loved the designs on the side.  It is so much fun to find six of a pretty plate or bowl so I can use them on the big table.  And I have to admit that my friend Carin is still right, I am not done with my Japanese phase yet, LOL!!

Finishing Someone Else’s Work from Needle and Foot

Last November I found a treasure in a thrift store.  It was stuffed into a basket and was marked 50 cents.  You know me, I couldn’t just leave it there.  I posted a picture of it on Instagram asking what I should do with it.  The most popular response was to ‘finish it up as it was’. Then the holidays rolled around and it was pushed aside.

Instagram posting from last fall.

On Monday, after a very busy week with the fair, I decided to just play in the sewing room for a bit.  I was too tired to ...

What three years of saying no to new clothes looks like from Stitch and Yarn

Colour combo love. My half-thrifted, half-handmade PJs
I got quite a shock when I went back through my posts to see when I basically stopped buying new clothes... It was January 2015 – three and a half years ago! No wonder things are starting to get dire in places. I haven't gone back to the audit document a lot, but it would be interesting to see whether it's decreased much in size. I am aiming to fit all my clothes into the wardrobe together without having to swap winter out for summer etc, but I'm still a way off that.

I haven't gone all ...

Thrifting Fun and Some DIY from From My Carolina Home

It was a fruitful few weeks in April and May, with lots of inexpensive goodies found.  I got a full set of silver chargers for tablescaping, and originally I thought I would paint them, but when I found the silver snowflake dishes, I changed my mind.  I’ll keep them silver for now. The card making elements will make wonderful cards for Safelight when the next project time comes along.

No matter, at another store on another day, I snapped up this set of 6 gold chargers with a gold tray for just $6!  Of course, I couldn’t resist ...

Thrifting Upcycled Clothing from Blended Fabric Quilts | Good Earth Quilting | Organic Quilting Cotton

When I completely opened my mind to the possibilities of upcycling I was instantly in love. I have many items that once they were washed, they became too small.

Just having fun is where it is at.

This started out as a t-shirt that was a a special t-shirt. You  know the one I like to wear working in the back yard or going camping. It had a statement on the front that had become stained from years of wear. And upcycling saved it from disposal.

I added all sorts of lace, bits and pieces of new cotton and Voila ...

Thrifting and Estate Sale Scores, and an amazing story from From My Carolina Home

It has been quite a while since I showed some of my thrifting and estate sale scores. It was a fruitful autumn season, LOL! There is a new auction house just south of Brevard, and the attendance isn’t up yet so prices were really low!  Plus there is a new thrift store in downtown Hendersonville to benefit the drug treatment program in the area.   I scored some orange chargers, stamping stuff and a puzzle there.  The plastic drawer set, milk glass footed square bowl, and roll of wide pink lace came from an estate sale the same day.

Sewing Room News from Needle and Foot

The season has definitely shifted to full blown fall around here.  We had a great rainy weekend and the colors are gorgeous.  The shot above was taken a few days ago up at the pond on the edge of our property.

I have a few fun things to share with you.  You may have noticed that Craftsy has been evolving and changing over the past year or so.  They started to carry their own brand of fabric (Boundless) as well as yarn (Cloudborn).  Now they are offering a subscription plan to the videos offered for sale on their site.  This ...

Thrifted Stash Update from Needle and Foot

It has been a long time since I have written a Sunday Stash post.  Maybe because I have been buying fabric constantly over the past months for my shop and it would be really boring if I wrote about each addition.  Technically, that isn’t my stash, but it is fabric and I do acquire it on a regular basis.

But today I want to share a couple of finds I had at the thrift store over the last several weeks. Every once in a while, I get lucky and find nice quality duvet covers in the thrift shop.  I ...
