RSC Week 21 - End of the Orange Month from Grandma's Red Needle

Goodbye RSC ORANGE - Welcome DARK & BRIGHT BLUES for June!
I haven't gone through my blue colors for June, not sure what I have. I do have a lot of blues, but dark & bright?

Well, May and the color orange is nearing its end. I don't have a big variety of orange, just enough to make the blocks for the Swirling Star Quilt

The big block

...and the two small blocks

What to do with the remaining orange?
Do you remember the '70's, when orange & brown were hot colors? My first sewing machine, a Husqvarna, (not my photo ...

More Blocks and a Finish from Heart Desire Creations

Haven’t been here in a while. This Spring in the Piedmont has been an absolute joy. The high heat hasn’t set in yet and the mornings have been lusciously cool. Much of my time has been in the garden – planting annuals, transplanting, weeding, weeding and more weeding! It’s a joyful time for me especially when I’m enjoying my morning coffee on the porch taking in all the flora and fauna and listening to the cheerful bird sounds.

I do make it into the sewing studio though. Little by little I continue to work on the Christmas ...

RSC Week 20 - May is Orange from Grandma's Red Needle

 Hello everyone!
Any progress on Orange - the RSC color for May, hosted by Angela over at SOScrappy
I'm a bit behind, but will get there eventually. I have been busy finishing the purple quilt top. More about that in another blog post.

Orange. Orange has never been a favorite color and that is visible in my stash; approximately 4.5 yards.

Some of them may be seen as yellow with orange, like #6 from left. The spots are orange and since I have only a few, I chose to use it as orange. I had already cut the squares ...

Fabric fix..................... from Exuberant Color

I didn't find any time to sew again yesterday but I needed to play with some fabric last night.  These are all Kathy Doughty fabrics.  I have a few more too but I just enjoyed looking at this group.  I have 3 of her books and have made several quilts that were inspired by her quilts.  I have never used her fabric though.

I mowed the front and side yard yesterday afternoon and then planted the final 3 tomato plants.  This is 2 of the 4th of July variety and one Rutgers.

I backed up for a wider view ...

More half rectangle blocks........... from Exuberant Color

Yesterday morning I was straightening up one area in the basement and noticed this pink and blue batik with little animals on it.  Since I have designated the pink twisted ribbon top as a baby quilt I decided this will be the backing fabric.

I mowed the grass in the early afternoon and then last night sewed some more half rectangle blocks.

(Anonymous: Yes I am die cutting the half rectangles)

There are 134 blocks in these piles and I have pressed 40.  I need 66 more so there will be some more sewing tonight and probably Friday night too ...

Recovery day.............. from Exuberant Color

After digging for 2 days I only had the energy yesterday to pot my 2 hanging baskets.  At the nursery I found a pre-potted arrangement with 3 different plants that was just a little smaller than my hanging baskets.  The price was about the same as all of the individual plants would have cost so this was an easy fix.  I just added dirt under and around the potted arrangement.  I got them hung before the rain started.  Thunderstorms so I unplugged my machine and no sewing last night.  It was 88 degrees before the rain came.

There were a ...

Free day.......... from Exuberant Color

The first day of the month is a free day after meeting my quota of finishes the night before.  I just wander around and look through things, dream of new projects, explore pieces and parts in storage boxes.

While the daylight was bright I got a good photo of the pink elephant fabric by Tula Pink.  It is such a happy fabric.

I found a stack of chisel pieces sewn into pairs so I tried a few of them up on the design wall to see what they want to become.  I think after sewing this together it will go ...

Applique from Quilt in Progress

This week I worked on some applique. I used HeatnBond, which is fusible on both sides. I found some simple outlines I wanted to use, first were the campfire and tent. I traced the shapes onto the paper side of the HeatnBond and cut around them, then fused them to the back side of the fabric I wanted to use. I used a pin to scratch the paper backing and remove it, then I fused the fabric to the items. In this case it was to make two coasters.

The applique needs stitching, so I chose a blanket stitch, made ...

Enough blocks............. from Exuberant Color

I have enough pieces for a 36" x 48" baby quilt.  I need to rearrange them a little first.

There are 2 different kinds of rectangle triangle blocks and each twist block of 6 pieces uses 4 of one and 2 of the other.  Than means a lot leftover all facing the same way.  I need to make another quilt or use them for a border or something.  I love leftovers.

Have you seen the new Tula Pink neon prints?  I had to have a couple of them.  My photo of the pink elephants was washed out and the color ...

Happy Accidents from Quilt in Progress

I mentioned I had bought a pound of fabric strips. They are the ends of bolts, so they may be a bit uneven and can be anywhere from 3-5 inches wide. I knew I’d be using small pieces for patchwork so it worked for me. I could not picture how much fabric a pound would be. The internet was mostly not helpful, but being stuck far from home and not allowed to shop in person, I took the chance. I was thrilled with the variety and the amount of fabric I got for that bargain price.

There were blenders ...

Long Overdue Finish from Heart Desire Creations

Several years ago – I have no idea how many, maybe six or eight? It all started with a pack of 5 inch squares. I pulled fabrics from my stash that went with the charm pack, including white and dragonfly fabric by Kathy Davis. With a vague plan, I began sewing half square triangles and trying different layouts on the design wall. Finally, landing on a layout I liked, I knew it needed something else. I came up with the corner layouts. I knew then that I was in love with this design!

The quilt definitely needed something else. I found ...

RSC Week 12 - GREEN Flimsy and Pieced Backing from Grandma's Red Needle

It has been another busy GREEN week.
My goal this month has been to use as much green fabric from my stash as possible, and I think I have succeeded, IMO. Last week I had made 48 scrappy Churn Dash blocks for the green scrappy quilt and made a couple of crumb blocks for the pieced backing (here).

A flimsy!!!

To get a better variety of green, I pulled out what I had of 5" squares in green. Not that it was that many, but fabric used is a good thing, isn't it? :)

It didn't take long piecing ...

New Favorite Quilt from Heart Desire Creations

The Carnival of Color quilt pattern free from Free Spirit Fabrics has long been on my bucket list. The pattern shows the quilt made with Kaffe fabrics. Although I have enough of those and love them, I wanted to make this quilt with something different. One day while standing in front of my fabric closet, staring, I had one of those Ah Ha! moments. I pulled all my Anna Maria Horner fabrics and the few Jane Sasamon fabrics from the shelves. The black and while border around the focus blocks and the binding is an Amy Butler fabric. How ...

Layouts confirmed........... from Exuberant Color

This Snail's Trail ended up with a scrappy multicolor look.  I put up all of the blocks and only changed 3 of them before taking down the rows and clipping them for sewing today or tomorrow.

I didn't take a final photo of the heart quilt and just took it down column by column as I was ready to add them for webbing the top.  I have all of the seams sewn in one direction and 2 seams sewn the other direction.  9 more seams to sew.

If you read my post yesterday I mentioned making another scrappy ...

Stash additions........... from Exuberant Color

The new Kaffe Collective for February 23 didn't inspire me too much so I didn't order any until last week.  The scale was larger on most of the prints than I anticipated.  The yellow on the bottom left has more orange in it than shows in this photo and it is prettier than its photo on the internet.  The turquoise above it was more intense in the internet photos but I like it in real life better.

I usually buy the 5" stacks so I can see what all of the prints and colors look like so I ...

Miscellany............ from Exuberant Color

Yesterday was a day of rest and recharge.  So here is a post of miscellany.

In a recent order I added 1/2 yard of this fabric.  I don't have any idea how I will use it but I had to have it.

Here is the info on the selvage.  I love the variety of colors and the intensity of the design.

I recently ran across these trays of triangles, all Marcia Derse fabrics, 2" finished size.  I have accumulated more scraps since I cut these so I may continue cutting  while I decide what I will make with ...

Playing with stash............ from Exuberant Color

I have had this fabric grouped for a couple years.  I rarely work with this few fabrics in a quilt because I need variety to keep me interested.

Maybe I should pull the black leaf fabric out and pair it with a variety of white with black fabrics.

Or maybe I could add all of those white with black to this whole group.  Ok, time to move on to something that needs to get done.

I will need 1.25 yards for the back of this baby 16 patch quilt so I pulled 3 of my larger yardage pieces to ...

A box of cut pieces............. from Exuberant Color

I was looking through the project boxes in the shelf unit under my ironing table.  In one I found piles of cut triangles, squares and rectangles.  There was also yardage that was possible additions to cut.

Every pile of triangles contained lots of different fabrics so I sorted them into like groups.  There are 12-16 triangles in each pile.  I laid 3 of the light fabrics next to them that I will cut triangles from to give me better contrast.  This looks like another mindless stitching project for TV nights.

This is one of the quilt tops I made in ...

Multicolor batiks........... from Exuberant Color

Most of my batiks are sorted by color but then there are the ones that are too multicolor so they get their own shelves.  Last night's fun was taking them down and sorting them by under a yard and over a yard.  This will make it so much easier for me to find backings for my colorwash quilts or any other small quilt.  I'm loving the nice neat stacks.

My favorite find was this purple and gray blue mottled fabric.  I have a half yard of it.

I found 5 other mottled fabrics that need to go down ...

Done and DONE!! from Crazy Quilter on a Bike!

OK --- so the lawn furniture got put away. Phew -- we can all rest easy now. It wasn't so much the furniture; it was shutting off the tap to the backyard that was the critical thing here. I noticed that DH put one piece in the shed, but it was the largest piece, making it a challenge to get the rest in there. But I managed. And I drained 200 feet of garden hose, and it's all stored away. The deck is mostly swept -- I would have used the leaf blower, but it was at the back of the ...
