Splendid Sampler II from Moda Lissa

Welcome to the last stop on the Splendid Sampler 2 block hop.

I have a story about my quilt block, but first I wanted to tell you about a few behind the scenes details. (excuse my analogies, but it fits)

While I did not birth this Splendid Sampler baby, I was indeed there at conception. A few years ago, I sat with the uber-talented Pat Sloan and Jane Davidson as they talked through this little idea they had. I immediately asked how Moda Fabrics can be involved. We continued to talk through the process from beginning to end, organizing the ...

Splendid Sampler 2 - Betty’s Bloom from 3 Dog Design Co

As many of you may know I was fortunate enough to be able to participate in the Splendid Sampler 2 organized by Pat Sloan and Jane Davidson.

I was very excited when asked to participate. I love Foundation Paper Piecing and of course I had to use that technique for my block.

The block is named Betty’s Bloom in remembrance of Betty Blue, my first Jack Russell. I had her as a puppy and she was the start of 3 Dog Design.

Betty Blue

I love all aspects of creating from designing to sewing but nothing is better that ...

Rose and Dot ~ Splendid Sampler II ~ Block #6 from A Few Loose Threads

Rose and Dot blockRose and Dot by Lori Kennedy.

Who struggles with applique? I personally do, I have hand issues…. and I’m trying to figure out the best way for me to get that edge turned under! I think this block turned out pretty well!

What’s your favorite way to do it? What works the best? I’ve been trying freezer paper and starch recently. That’s how I did this block.
I made a big mess too!

Point Taken ~ Splendid Sampler II ~ Block #5 from A Few Loose Threads

Point Taken by Susan Ache

 Point Taken by Susan Ache.

A great block to practice “pressing for success”.

  • The spot where the seams meet will be bulky with all the layers of fabric.
  • To avoid this problem, press half of the seams toward the triangles and half away from the triangles.
  • This allows the seams to “nest” or go opposite directions from one another.
  • When the block is assembled, press the seams with triangles open.

Point Taken Pressing

Clamshells ~ Splendid Sampler II ~ Block #3 from A Few Loose Threads

Clamshells - Splendid Sampler Block #3

Appliqué and Embroidery all in one super cute block!

It is true that I fumble with both applique and embroidery – fumbly fingers, bifocals, fear of making a mistake….you name it! But I was determined to make this block by hand. And I did (with a few re-do’s). It didn’t take long – it was finished in an afternoon! I’m looking forward to more skill building in this area. How about You?

I saw an opportunity to organize my supplies and found this cute little divided dish at TARGET for $0.59!

2018 – the year of quilting from Susan P Blog

It is funny how I suddenly find myself in the middle of four quilts! The cat quilt topping was made last year and then put away. I have now added the batting and done the quilting, just to add the backing and binding and it will be finished! As with the SS quilt I decided to give it a minky backing. The moment it arrives (I ordered the fabric online as we the closest fabric shop to me is nearly 4 hours away) I’ll finish the quilt and it will be ready to be used. Mollie already tested it ...

Splendid Sampler 2 from Susan P Blog

Can’t believe block 2 has just been released – we only started with block 1 the other day! I decided to use the Splendid Sampler blocks for a crochet fusion quilt instead of a normal quilt. I usually enjoy making the blocks, but do not enjoy finishing off the whole quilt, and I am not really very good with it. But in the past I enjoyed making fusion quilts. This way I complete each block – with minky fabric on the back of the block and crochet around each block; these blocks can then be joined and I can add as ...

Happiness is……… from Susan P Blog

Happiness is when your husband takes a trip around the world to visit the children and travel with them………and comes back with fabric he bought all over the world. And the best part???? He remembered I always buy at least 2 metres to make sure I have more than enough for a smocked dress. And to top it off my daughter sent me a selection of beautiful buttons and her partner sent me a piece of fabric with cameras because I love photography. I think I received the best holiday souvenirs ever </p>

SPLENDID SAMPLER 2 from Moda Lissa

Today is the beginning of a beautiful quilting journey. If you did not finish your Splendid Sampler quilt, it is not too late to jump in on the second round. The blocks will be 6″ so any combination of Splendid Sampler blocks will work nicely together.

I am sharing my version of block 1 designed by Alex Veronelli! No better person to start us on our Splendid journey than the king of Aurifil thread.

I must admit I did not finish round 1, so I am combining blocks from both series. I am so inspired by the book
and all ...

Quilting or knitting? from Susan P Blog

It is a well-known secret that I don’t like knitting. It is also well-known that I said I have retired from quilting. But I am itching to do something different. And I was tempted when I went on the Splendid Sampler FB group – they are starting Splendid Sampler ll in June. So here I go again! I really enjoyed this QAL when I did it in 2016, and also I didn’t make all 100 blocks I was still very happy with the quilt I made.

So fabric ordered, book ordered…….I am ready for the June kick-off. This ...

Changes Bring Changes from Wedding Dress Blue

Young Son, age 20,  has moved out of the house and into an apartment with a roommate friend from high school.  This is a good thing for him.

And, it created an empty room in our house.

So, the furniture that made my sewing space also the guest bedroom is now in that room.

And I finished this quilt to grace the bed.

It is based on the Splendid Sampler quiltalong last year.  Finished size:  78″ x 66″.

Of course, moving all that furniture that created opportunities in the sewing space that include new storage shelves and my first-ever cutting ...

Oh Scrap- It’s QuiltJane from Moda Lissa

Hop Hop Hop on over to my friend way across the pond. Jane Davidson of Quiltjane.

My mom always taught me that you can read people by their eyes. I am reminded of this every time I see Jane. Her eyes, her sweet smile and her gentle spirit drew me to her the first time I met her. I also think she was handing out the famous snack of Aussie’s, Tim Tam Bars.

Jane is the other half of the Splendid Sampler team. I talked about Pat Sloan earlier in the hop.

While the bazillions of people were working ...

Oh Scrap- it’s Pat Sloan from Moda Lissa

Today’s stop on the Oh Scrap blog hop is the insatiable Pat Sloan.

Pat is the life of any quilt gathering and her husband Gregg is also up for the party. They drive across the country teaching classes, lectures and meeting quilters.

What great smiles!!

Pat has got to be the busiest person in “quilt show business”.

With a background in the tech industry, it is no surprise that she manages one of the largest Quilting Facebook groups, Quilt Along with Pat Sloan

Pat is often the ring leader of the Aurifil Designer of the Month Sew along.  Picture ...

Cameo Quilters Guild Quilt Show from Bits From The Scrap Basket

While in Bad Axe over Memorial Weekend, the quilt shop owner reminded us the Cameo Quilter's show was this upcoming weekend, so we decided to check it out!

Steve, Lorna and Elisa
Lorna's Favorite Quilt
It's a lovely but small show in Madison Heights which featured quite a few mystery quilts, quilt challenges and lots of scrappy quilts. I could've happily taken either one of these home.

This one is Steve's favorite - an embroidered Route 66 quilt by Kathy Debein.

Speaking of amazing embroidery.... Sherry Palmer

My favorite, by far, was Terry Thompson's completed ...
