Back to it............ from Exuberant Color

I had so many things I needed to take care of yesterday and one of them was mowing the grass.  It was at least 5" tall.  I used both batteries and still ran out of power so I will need to finish the yard today.  I got in 45 minutes of mowing.

Last night I sewed the postage stamp block (in one direction) that has been laid out for over 2 weeks and designed the next one to sew.  I need to get several done this week and get them up on the wall again to see how they look.

Charley Harper stars........... from Exuberant Color

I had a very busy day yesterday but I needed to sew something last night.  Since the Charley Harper fabrics were already pressed I cut the squares and triangles and made 3 blocks.  I have 13 blocks for this quilt now.  They are 9" so I probably need either 48 or 63 blocks depending on how large of a throw quilt I want to make.

Here are some of the smaller prints in the other Charley Harper line that I mentioned yesterday.  His designs are printed on Organic Cotton and were $16.50 a yard when I bought the first ...

Caterpillar parade.......... from Exuberant Color

Two friends I hadn't seen for quite awhile came by yesterday.  He wanted a couple milkweed leaves and I mentioned that I hadn't seen any caterpillars for almost a week and I was about ready to pull out the milkweed.  He came back in the house all excited and said I had 3 caterpillars on one plant.  It is on the one I called Swamp Milkweed and he said it is also called Butterfly Weed.
While I was looking at those 3 he spied another one on a little milkweed plant right next to the sidewalk.

We kept ...

3 more star blocks......... from Exuberant Color

I think maybe I will make this whole quilt with novelty type prints combined with the solids.  Lynn's inspiration quilt is 81" x 99" (99 blocks).  I think I'll stop at a large throw or twin size depending on how many cute prints I find (and I have a lot of them).  Click on photos to enlarge and see the novelty prints.

I have 8 blocks sewn with 34 more sets of solid color triangles already cut.  This amount would make a quilt 54" x 63" which isn't large enough.  I want it to be at least ...

2 more stars............ from Exuberant Color

Two more star blocks are done, potato chips and popcorn.  I think when I chose the yellow star points for the popcorn I was subconsciously adding the butter.  As a child of the 1940s there weren't a lot of junk foods like there are today and living on the farm we mostly ate what we grew.  We had chickens and cattle and pigs besides the garden.  Now they tell me I should eat air popped popcorn with no butter or salt.  My reaction: why would I want that?  We bought potato chips in the tall metal can and they ...

Sewing blocks............ from Exuberant Color

I worked on my kits for several hours and then decided to sew a few blocks.  I made the bottom 2 star blocks but they aren't pressed yet so they look a little crooked.  I have lots more solid triangles cut, just need to cut prints now.
I now have two 6" hole in the barn door a/k/a churn dash blocks made for my Farm Girl Vintage quilt.  I plan to make more of these.

The roofing begins............ from Exuberant Color

This was the scene out my back windows yesterday.  About 2/3 of the roofing job is done and they will be back at 7 this morning to finish.

I went to the basement and basted another third of the African fabric quilt.

Then I decided to pull out this old Stepping Stones project and put it on the design wall so I could see where I am with it.  I tore out some papers and only have a few left to do.  I have the narrow black strips cut, just have to get them to the right lengths for ...

Several projects........... from Exuberant Color

I didn't make any postage stamp blocks last week and only have two sewn so far this week.  No pressure, no plan from here on out.  I'll just make blocks when I feel like it.  I have the solids cut for 16 more blocks so I just need to cut the prints, 32 per block x 16 blocks is 512 little 1.5" print squares.  I am repeating prints because I usually cut more than one of a print, sometimes as many as 6 which is the number of squares on the die.
I had 28 scrappy batik ...

Just for the record............ from Exuberant Color

I put up all of my blocks so the art quilters could see what I am working on.  This wall isn't the best lit place in the basement but I have a reference point photo when I had 24 blocks done.

These are on the same double wall.  I have a lot of black and white prints so far and not much color so I'll be working on that next in the cutting for these blocks.

Today I have a hair cut early and then helping a friend with cutting a for a quilt.

A few more blocks................ from Exuberant Color

After finishing all of the cleaning I needed a little fun sewing.  I made all of the framed 9 patch blocks that I had cut and 2 of the zipper blocks.  Today I will put all 30 of the 9 patch blocks up on a design wall.

I put almost all of the zipper blocks up on a single design wall.  I made the zipper teeth in each vertical row various shades of the same color, purple, orange, turquoise, pink/red, yellow, green and blue.  It is just a trial layout to see if I want to do them this ...

Cut, cut, cut and sew............. from Exuberant Color

My two friends came over yesterday for a shortened sewing day and I worked on a block cut with my Studio die cutter.  I have used the die before and think one of the pieces isn't quite right.  I need to work on it some more so I'll show it later.

I took a pile of my scraps and cut 22 more postage stamp print squares.
Last night I paired plain colors with all of the print pieces I had already cut for the framed 9 patch blocks.  I sewed 4 of the 9 patches but didn't ...

Errand day............. from Exuberant Color

I always put off running errands as long as I can but yesterday it caught up with me and I had to do them.

When I got home I really couldn't get motivated to get into any project so I just cut some pieces for the framed 9 patch blocks.  I have lots of the solids ready, just need to cut more prints.

July Monthly recap.........and zippers............ from Exuberant Color

Finally some finishes.......the first ones since April.  The colorwash rail fence is 33" x 39.25", the squares and frames with Marcia Derse fabric is 49.5" x 66.5" and the Wild Rectangles is 40" x 53.5".

I made 7 new zipper blocks last night.  I used some fun fabrics in this group.

My back garden has more blooms now that almost all of the tiger lilies have opened.  I took this photo in the early evening so it has more of a blue cast.  If I photographed the same area in the morning it would have ...

Postage stamp block report............... from Exuberant Color

I completed 4 more of last week's 7 postage stamp blocks.

That makes a grand total of 6 out of 7 finished for the week.

Here are all 20 blocks so far.  My original plan was to make 63 blocks for a quilt 56" x 72".  Now I'm wondering if I would be happy with a quilt 48" x 72".  That is a good ratio for a rectangular quilt.  Decision will be made later.
The number 7 block was laid out but didn't get sewn last week.

My backyard garden is just starting to bloom.  Last year ...

Progress on two............ from Exuberant Color

I sewed 10 more zipper blocks.  I have 57 blocks made now.

I sewed the one postage stamp block that I showed on my design board a couple days ago.

6 more colors have been cut for the postage stamp blocks.  I need to make 5 more this week.

I went out in the bright sunshine yesterday morning to take photos of my flowers.  Coneflowers are here and there through the back garden.

The lilies seem happy in this part of the garden.  They get morning sun and then are in the shade all the rest of the day.

Errand day and cutting.............. from Exuberant Color

Most of the morning was running errands yesterday since I hadn't been leaving home much in the heat and humidity.

Then I retreated to the cool basement to cut more fabrics and pair them for more zipper blocks.  I am repeating solid colors since there is a half strip left over from previous cutting.

Today is my pacemaker checkup.  It is done every 3 months to be sure it is working properly and then they also estimate the number of years left on the battery in it.  It will be 2 years old on Aug. 31.

One way designs............ from Exuberant Color

I decided to make a few of the framed 9 patch blocks yesterday.  I wanted to do one of the one way design fabrics to see if I was happy with all of the pieces cut from one crosswise strip or did I need to cut the side border strips on the lengthwise grain.  I think I'm fine with the way this turned out.  Maybe all one way designs won't work this well but this one is okay.
I sewed the bottom right postage stamp block plus all of the blocks below it yesterday.

It was too hot ...

2 weeks down, 7 to go............ from Exuberant Color

This is this week's contribution to the postage stamp blocks.  The squares are 1" so the blocks will finish at 8".

This is the bounty from the first 2 weeks, 7 a week even though I did them 10 the first week and 4 the second week.   Like I mentioned yesterday it will take me 9 weeks at this rate to get the 63 minimum blocks finished.  So.....7 more weeks to go.  I did more cutting yesterday while it was so hot outside.  I don't have much energy in this weather.

The month is almost half over ...

Numbers 13 and 14............ from Exuberant Color

I decided when I started this postage stamp quilt that I would try to do 7 blocks each week.  I actually had 10 blocks done at the end of the first week so I only needed to do 4 this week.  Here is how far I got yesterday, all seams sewn in one direction on two blocks.  For 63 blocks it will take me 9 weeks to make the blocks at this rate.  I will finish them today and have my quota for the first 2 weeks.  Meanwhile I have been doing more cutting and some yard work before the ...

4 blocks.............. from Exuberant Color

It seems like I should get so much more than this sewn in a day.....but this is all that got done yesterday.

There was a tiny scrap with this guy on it that worked perfect for a one inch finished square.

I'm trying to work some zebra prints into these blocks.

The next one is laid out ready to sew.  This one has some fabrics from the  1980s in it.  The solid is a putty color.

The butterflies don't seem to mind that the coneflowers are a faded pink this year.
