Redwork Stitching, Marking Pencils,Gardening, Movies from Canadian Needle Nana

I shared a photo of the vines that grew so well in winter inside the house a while back. Here they are still alive and well outside all summer. I had put a few seeds in soil just to see what would happen knowing that, while I had no success growing pumpkins, I loved the leaves and these, whatever they are, look so pretty. A very tiny critter also loves them as there are little nibbles taken in some of  them.

And the Marigolds are the ones I grew from seeds planted in my garage green house in May. I ...

Making the Most of Things from Becca's Crazy Projects

When I got to the end of a roll of batting I had a piece of batting that would work for two charity quilts but I would have to load them a little differently than usual. Usually I load charity quilts with the selvage edges along the rails (so the top rail and the bottom rail on the machine) and I load the quilt top so the sides of the quilt are along those same rails. So the top of the quilt is on my right side and the bottom is on the left. This batting was cutting it close ...

Tool Tips from Becca's Crazy Projects

Today I'd like to talk about some of my favorite and must-have tools. First, a quality pair of snips. These are my favorite. I have two: one with my long arm, and one with my English Paper Piecing bag/kit. I keep mine on a retractable badge holder. That way I can slide the clip onto my shirt collar so my scissors are always handy. I can also slide the clip onto my keyboard tray on the frame.
Next, the humble yard stick. You can pick these up at the home improvement warehouse of your choice, usually for just ...

Dead Like Me from Becca's Crazy Projects

I enjoyed piecing this quilt so much. The blocks are big, you don't repeat things. It was great. Some of the pieces can be cut with your Accuquilt Go! if you have the right dies.
I worked through the piecing over about a week.
I had some of this great black fabric left over from another project. It made the perfect border.

Dead Like Me from Becca's Crazy Projects

I have been making great progress on my Dead Like Me quilt.
I started with the sections with black fabric. I wanted to see something that really looked like something and the eyes seemed a great start.
I love how this pattern is presented.
It wasn't long before I had finished one half of the top.

Dead Like Me from Becca's Crazy Projects

I did a bunch of cutting. So much cutting. I even pulled some 2.5" squares from my collection of little charms.
This quilt has such a great collection of fabrics. I can't wait to see this one come together.

Dead Like Me from Becca's Crazy Projects

I bought a couple quilt patterns from Rose City Originals a few months ago. I've been looking for a new project and Dead Like Me kept floating to the top. I thought I may need to do some shopping. The first rule of quilting is that you should check your collection before you head out to the quilt shop. Trust me. Some of us have more fabric than we can reasonably use in a lifetime. This is the collection of fabrics I pulled, and curated. I don't know if I will use all of these, but I'm ...

Courthouse Steps in Blues, Mail, Hand Injury from Canadian Needle Nana

Days flying by... June already which is crazy. We broke a weather record for heat yesterday. The former high was 29C and we had it 39C (102F) here in the Ottawa Valley. That is extreme, but no humidity thankfully. We pulled the drapes and halted the outside chores.

Look at how quickly all the leaves have opened!

LeeAnna at Not Afraid of Color's prompt this week is what is our favourite ice cream flavour. Mine is Haagen-Dazs' Salted Caramel. I can't have it in the house. I do not have a sweet tooth but this is delicious ...

Brown Bag Mystery Finish from Becca's Crazy Projects

I found the perfect diagonal print to bind this All Hallows Brown Bag Mystery Quilt. I like stripes, dots and diagonal stripes for binding. Diagonal prints are great because it makes it look like you put stripes on the bias without the work of making bias binding.
The quilting for this quilt is a fun spiral spider web design called Gossamer, available from Urban Elementz.
See my tips on machine-finished quilt binding
Overall, a great finish. I'm sure I will check out the mystery quilt next year. This one had some new tricks and it was a great experience ...

Oops! from Becca's Crazy Projects

And how I fixed it...
Have you ever made a mistake cutting your batting? Well, here is mine. I cut into the batting on the folded edge at about half the width of batting I needed. I measured and cut the right amount and here is how I fixed that first cut.
Turned the batting face down on my pressing board, and cut a piece of featherweight fusible to mend that first cut. I pressed it onto the batting. You can also buy fusible batting tape that will do the same thing but comes in a handy roll.
Here is ...

Brown Bag Mystery from Becca's Crazy Projects

Remember those quarter square triangle blocks I was making? Let's get back to those.
This was basically my practice quilt for the Brown Bag Mystery Quilt. I worked out how to make each unit using fabric from my collection. This one is very different and I really like how it is turning out. I haven't decided on borders yet.

Brown Bag Mystery from Becca's Crazy Projects

Pieced top center complete! Time for some borders.
A narrow orange border.
Followed by a wider black border. I'm so pleased with this finished top. Now I need some backing and I can get it quilted. I found the perfect quilting design for this little quilt. I think a light gray backing is the right way to go.

Brown Bag Mystery from Becca's Crazy Projects

This mystery quilt is such a delight.
The units are just the right size and the blocks are large. Next is joining it all together with the sashing.

Brown Bag Mystery from Becca's Crazy Projects

Do you remember my Brown Bag Mystery Quilt?
The big reveal happened last weekend. I decided it was time I got cutting and stitching. Here is the first clue, fun little uneven nine-patch units. How fun is that skeleton print!?! It is directional but I'm going to treat it as though it is a tossed print and let the pieces fall whichever direction they fall.
Pieced sashings are delightful. The directions for these are great! I cut the quarter triangle units with the Accuquilt Go! So fast, and accurate.
These outer sashing pieces are simple yet effective.
Here is ...

New Starts from Becca's Crazy Projects

I don't have anything exciting to share today. I do have this pile of black and white prints that I am going to make into a quilt, or quilts. I'm still in the planning stage, so stick around to see what happens.

Quarter Square Triangle Blocks from Becca's Crazy Projects

I'm working on a project and needed a bunch of quarter square triangle blocks. I decided to give my Accuquilt Go! a workout.
Start with four squares cut to at least 5.5" inches by 5.5" inches. This block has two green quarters, one background (tan with stars), and one orange quarter. Starting with four squares will yield four finished units. You could use four colors but my quilt pattern called for three colors.
Layer the squares with right sides together. I know it isn't easy to tell with that green solid. Make sure the fabric grain ...

Scrappy Bricks and Charms from Becca's Crazy Projects

Last weekend I pieced a couple little quilts. This one used 5" charm squares to make pluses.
I had to make another scrappy bricks quilt top. I enjoy making these so much.

Springtime from Becca's Crazy Projects

I haven't been getting much done this past week. Well, I went on walks with my dog and saw the daffodils blooming at the end of my block.
I pieced this simple quilt top for Quilts for Kids. I quilted it, too.
I cut a bunch of squares and bricks for more charity quilts. Otherwise a quiet week.

Scrappy Bricks from Becca's Crazy Projects

Last weekend I pulled out my stack of 2.5" strips and cut a bunch of 2.5" x 4.5" bricks. This time, I pulled bright green, dark green, aqua, and some yellows. I also pulled out some 4.5" center blocks from my stack.
Over part of Saturday I pieced the 12.5" blocks. On Sunday, I finished piecing the blocks and assembled them into this little top that will finish at about 36" by 36". Perfect for a Quilts for Kids quilt. I think I have a piece of green flannel that will make a snuggly backing ...
