Home Update #8 and Fabric News from Christa Quilts

I’m still recovering from my awesome trip to QuiltCon last week, so more about that later. But I wanted to give you all an update of what I was able to accomplish in the new house before I left. We’ve now been in our home for nearly 2 months and it’s coming along nicely. My busy traveling season has now begun so most of the remaining work will need to happen in chunks of time in between teaching trips! Here’s the latest and greatest:

Watsons New House

My living room area is nearly put together. We started with the ...

We’re Thawing Out – Join Us for a Class on Saturday! from Cultured Expressions

I hope everyone is coming thru the Big Freeze safely.  Once you get over tihe initial shock to the body, the cold air is rather invigorating, no? It’s said that tomorrow we’ll begin warming up, so consider joining us for one or two workshops tomorrow 9Saturday, February 2, 2019) here at the Studio:

Saturday's Song. Slow Stitching. Sunday Stats. from Faith, Trust and Breast Cancer

Saturday's Song.
This video of God Only Knows by King and Country is shocking, but so true.  I just read that a suicide attempt is made every 28 seconds!  Dear one, God knows you, He never leaves you.  People will let us down, but not God.  Try Him.

Let us all look around us and who kindness.  A smile, a prayer, a gentle touch of encouragement to a stranger/friend/loved one could change their lives.
Take good care!

Slow Stitching.
My slow stitching project continues to be my Grandmother's Flower Garden quilt.  I'll also be choosing ...

New Sewing Machine Desk from Heart Desire Creations

I’ve had a Featherweight for several years now but haven’t used it much. I bring it to retreats as a back-up, but have only used it once. There’s been a student desk in my studio for a few years now that’s only served as a catch- all. I considered getting rid of it, but it has a strong family history. It was my husband’s desk growing up, then it was my son’s until he left home. I painted it black for my daughter to use at her home where she used it for her ...

Can I Get A Whoop Whoop? Truck-or-Treat! from Confessions of a Fabric Addict

Hi, all!

Friday is here once again (how does that keep happening?) and it's time for us to get our whoop whoop on!  Are you ready?  I am - can't wait to share what I've been teasing about for the past week or so... Let's go!

*&*&*&*&*&*&*

You may remember the things I've been making lately...

...a giant pincushion, pins and needle...

...and a giant tape measure!

Well, here's what those things were for...

Truck-or-Treat!

My husband wanted to use his truck instead of my car, and since he came up with the theme, it only ...

Thank you IKEA! Studio Remake from The Free Motion Quilting Project

Two weeks ago James went down to the basement to grab something and said "Hey, there's a lot of water on the floor down there."

Basement + Water + Floor = BAD! Especially bad because we have three fish tanks in the basement. One of them is 180 gallons.

Turns out it was one of the smaller fish tanks (not the 180 gallon, whew!) It cracked and leaked around 5 gallons of water on the floor overnight. Instantly we went into cleanup mode, and unfortunately most of the water had leaked into my kitchen studio.

But bad things can some times have ...

Archaeological Accomplishment for the Month of August: I Have Unearthed My Cutting Table and Rediscovered a Window! from Cheeky Cognoscenti

There Was a Cutting Table Hiding Beneath Those Mountains of Fabric!
Does your work space ever get so cluttered that it's literally paralyzing?  Mine had gotten to the point that I was stalled out on several works-in-progress because I only had about a square foot of this table surface available for cutting and measuring.  That was fine for making those decadent little string triangles, but I didn't have anywhere near enough room for:

  • Measuring and adjusting the pieced borders of my almost-completed Jingle BOM quilt top
  • Measuring, cutting and piecing the backing fabric for my Paint Me a ...

She Shed–McCarthy Style from Tales of a Stitcher

I am working out in McCarthy, Alaska right now. It doesn’t get any better than this. I am stitching away in the Wrangell St. Elias National Park. This is our cabin looking pretty spiffy with a new paint job. Around back on the right side is my studio.

I wrote about my McCarthy Sewing Studio several summers ago, and I think it is time for revisit.  Earlier this summer, I posted a photo of the doors to my McCarthy studio on Instagram and tooheycohen commented, “You making a She Shed?”

Green Door Studio

I didn’t even know that term existed, but ...

Why Am I Keeping All This Stuff? from The Free Motion Quilting Project

Yep, this was my upstairs office today...

I was planning to move a big cabinet you can't see in this picture out of this room and into the living room. So I pulled everything out and began sorting through it.

Then Josh and I talked through the move some more and he decided to dismantle the 55 gallon fish tank you can see in the corner of the photo next weekend so I don't need to move this cabinet anymore.

There's a piece of me that wonders if I should keep all this stuff. A giant chunk ...

Hello July! from Heart Desire Creations

Another month already! Whew – is it just me or is the summer already flying by?  There has been a lot of sewing going on this past month here, but somehow I never seem to feel as though I’ve accomplished as much as I’d like to. About a week was spent sanding and painting my new table. I also took several days to prep backings and bindings for Hospice quilts. Here is one all finished. The quilt top was generously donated by Laurie J. She has donated several to our Hospice group and it is so greatly appreciated! My ...

New Sewing Machine Table from Heart Desire Creations

This quilter is so lucky to have a hubby who is not only very handy, but very willing to improve my creative space! I recently got a new Jazz machine that I blogged about here. My Bernina is set into my big sewing desk and I love it.  We talked about the possibility of doing something similar for the Jazz with the craft table I had. It proved to be easier and much better to just make a whole new one.  Hubby sketched it out and went to work.  Amazing – he had it built within two weeks! I had the ...

“Hey, What’s In There?” from Cultured Expressions

Finally, our permanent signage is installed and I love it!!  Now people (including those stopped at the red light right outside our door) will know exactly what’s going on here!  Thank you once again to the Rahway Chamber of Commerce for extending one of their first-ever business grants to Cultured Expressions, allowing us to redirect this precious funding elsewhere in the business ; )

So I’m just realizing that my messy cropping caught the very top of the sign…ugh!  rushing!  Will post a better one later but you get the idea, right? Better yet, come see it in person ...

Creative Mess... from ~ CowgirlQuilter ~

I snapped this pic last night before turning everything off and heading back downstairs.  As you can see I have a creative mess.  LOL!  I need to take a few minutes to pick up before it gets out of hand.
I still have my Courthouse Steps on the longarm.  I think I mentioned that I broke a needle and now the stitches are horrible.  :(  So I'm still trying to get that figured out.  Do you see my little step stool in front of the longarm?  LOL!  I'm only 5ft tall so when I work from the front of ...

Can I Get A Whoop Whoop? A Great Workspace... from Confessions of a Fabric Addict

Hi, all!

Friday is here once again - and that means it's time to get our whoop whoop on!!  Are you ready?  Let's get started!

*&*&*&*&*&*&*

I did finish up a few things this week...

First up was this bright little quilt for a 2-year old boy with cystic fibrosis.  It was VERY windy, as you can see in the pictures above - I managed to get pictures of the flimsy (sort of) but didn't get any of the finished quilt before I delivered it!  Oops....

I also finished the two t-shirt quilts!

But my favorite finish of the past ...

Oh Kitty! from Curlicue Creations

If you know me...you know I love my kitties!  I thought it would be fun to share some photos of my kitty helpers today.  This is Trail Mix, helping to hold down one of my hexie projects.

Beetle and friend, sitting on my table top sewing box.

William, inside the quilt cabinet.

Shadow and the Farmer's Market quilt.  He's a big, cuddly guy.

Kit Kat and a pile of fabric scraps.

Mama Cat and her babies, warm and cozy inside a Warm Company box.

Kitten mania on the scrap basket!

Aaaaah!  The ironing board is toasty warm ...

I’ve been putting in the hours at the new studio, and can’t wait to have you all come visit! Be sure to see the scheduled events for the Preview Weekends in October and November online. I know the end of October seems like an eternity, but rest assured that if you’re experiencing a Fabric Emergency, you can also visit between now and the Dec 1-3 Grand Opening by appointment, and we’ll do our best to administer the proper Retail Therapy to get you through!  (Note that I’m hosting the Santa Fe SewJourn Oct 18-24).  Keep ...
