Machine Needles from Becca's Crazy Projects

I don't know who needs to hear this. But if you were waiting for some kind of sign, this is it. Change your sewing machine needle. Heck, buy a stack of them so you can change it regularly. My favorite needles are these titanium coated topstitch needles from Superior Threads. The larger eye is perfect for embroidery, and suitable for everyday sewing. Seriously, treat yourself.

Fur Mantle from Becca's Crazy Projects

What can you do with a piece of fur from Ikea? Well, my plan was to make a fur mantle that would give the viewer the impression of a barbarian character.
I made a foundation for the fur and sewed the fur to the foundation.
And trimmed the fur into a suitable shape.
Then, I decided I didn't want it to be white and did a dye experiment. And that is where it all went sideways. I didn't wait for the water to get up to temp. I wasn't sure the water would ever get up to ...

Horned Hat from Becca's Crazy Projects

I've been sewing up fleece hats this week. I found this great pattern from Feerie Telle and just had to pick it up and make a fun hat.
The horns are made using smaller pieces so I went through my scrap bin and picked out some blues.
I needed to get a feel for the effect so I pinned the front of the hat to my foam head. I think they turned out just great.
Then I finished the hat and it is so great! I'm sure I'll make a few more of these, with different colored ...

Mending from Becca's Crazy Projects

This is something of a joke at my house. Because I will absolutely fix things, and hem things.
The belt loops on my partners pats had worn through. I sliced up a some denim from another pair of pants and pulled out the belt loop attachments for my Baby Lock. After about thirty minutes of looking for the directions and setting up the machine (it doesn't take long unless you don't use all the features very often. I ended up using the 3/4" attachment.
This attachment makes quick work of making the belt loop pieces.
In a ...

Making Masks from Becca's Crazy Projects

We recently attended a game convention that required masks for all attendees.
I wanted some new masks made with fabric that fit the theme.
The cut away triangles are so cute!
I made a dozen new masks. Not that we needed that many for a weekend event. Dice, beholders, potions, dragons, gelatinous cubes, and rainbow vomiting cats. Fabrics from Spoonflower.
Then we popped them into the wash so they would be clean for our convention.

I wrote my own tutorial for these masks. You can find out more about the design on my post How I Mask. Stay safe out ...

Green Bags from Becca's Crazy Projects

I'm not sure how this fabric came to be in my collection. It could have been Aunt Betty. In any case, I had enough to back a quilt and enough to make two totes using the Green Bag Lady pattern.
I didn't use my serger on these. I did make them with French seams so they are very tidy.
It was a good afternoon project. These fold up very nicely to tuck into your bag when going to the store. I've always got one in my bag.

Then Green Bag Lady regularly gives away totes through random ...

Making the Most of Things from Becca's Crazy Projects

When I got to the end of a roll of batting I had a piece of batting that would work for two charity quilts but I would have to load them a little differently than usual. Usually I load charity quilts with the selvage edges along the rails (so the top rail and the bottom rail on the machine) and I load the quilt top so the sides of the quilt are along those same rails. So the top of the quilt is on my right side and the bottom is on the left. This batting was cutting it close ...

Tool Tips from Becca's Crazy Projects

Today I'd like to talk about some of my favorite and must-have tools. First, a quality pair of snips. These are my favorite. I have two: one with my long arm, and one with my English Paper Piecing bag/kit. I keep mine on a retractable badge holder. That way I can slide the clip onto my shirt collar so my scissors are always handy. I can also slide the clip onto my keyboard tray on the frame.
Next, the humble yard stick. You can pick these up at the home improvement warehouse of your choice, usually for just ...

Getting Hexie with It from Becca's Crazy Projects

I finished up the basting of the rest of my little hexies a couple weeks ago.
Yesterday I stacked them up into planned flower sets.
Then I filled my hexie project bag with all those sets. Now I can easily grab a single flower and get stitching. Someday, I will have a quilt top.

Fleece Sewing from Becca's Crazy Projects

A friend of mine has one of those really big skeletons from Halloween. He wants to dress the big one up as a skeletal Santa and the little ones up as elves. He asked if I could make them some hats. I said sure. This is the stack of fabrics I pulled that met the red, green, black, and white requirements.
Step two was to measure the skull circumference of one of the small skeletons. We have one sitting around so that was an easy step. Then I found a free pattern, and tutorial for a Santa hat at Fleece ...

Getting Hexie with It from Becca's Crazy Projects

Week number two of using the Sewline Water-Soluble Fabric Glue Pen I'm back to show you my progress. This time I managed to baste nearly 100 hexies with a single stick of glue. The stack of fabric that still needs to be basted is so much smaller. I ordered my refills from Amazon and they should be here this week.

A note about affiliate links: Even if you don't buy the products I link to, using my link to get to Amazon counts. If something I share inspires you, and you were going to buy something anyway, click ...

Getting Hexie with It from Becca's Crazy Projects

After a week of using the Sewline Water-Soluble Fabric Glue Pen I'm back to show you my progress. I would make a few of these most evenings. At the end of the week I had consumed the glue and basted 75 hexies. I think that's pretty good. I've changed the glue and am back at it. I wonder if I will get as many next week. Hopefully I will be close. That stack of fabric still needs to be basted. I already have more refills in my Amazon cart. Once I finish the basted I will be ...

Getting Hexie With It from Becca's Crazy Projects

I've been thread basting my hexies. By the way, these are my absolute favorites scissiors for snipping thread. I have a pair near my long arm and this pair in my hexie kit. Linked at the bottom of the post.
I decided to give the Sewline Fabric Glue Pen a try.
This kit (linked at the bottom of the post) comes with the glue pen and one refill.
One is basted with thread, the other with glue. I don't sew through the papers when basting. I only stitch through the fabric on the back side. This means the ...

Getting Hexie With It from Becca's Crazy Projects

As I was working on my hexie flowers I realized I didn't know where the rest of the flowers were hiding. This later afternoon sun is not helping me take good photographs.
I poked around in my sewing room until I found what I was looking for: a box labeled "Hexies". Sometimes I get it right. So many great things in that box. A big stack of finished flowers, two more 5" charm packs, a bunch of hexie papers, and some larger pieces of coordinating fabric.
I cut those last 5" charms into 2.5" charms and put them ...

Getting Hexie With It from Becca's Crazy Projects

I have been working, on and off, on these hexie flowers for close to ten years. It is a great travel project, or something I can do while watching television but I just haven't been working on it all that diligently. Want to see where I was in 2014? Check out this post
I was recently in a teleconference and grabbed my bag and got stitching.
I managed to finish four of them last week. Slow progress, but not ten years of slow progress.
