Emergence book project from Joy in Cloth

Every other year the Oregon region of SAQA (Studio Art Quilt Associates) organizes a traveling show. It is open to members of our local region and is always juried. In 2020 when it was time to start on the new show for 2021-2023, covid was rampant. Our committee members met on Zoom and pondered what to do since many galleries were closed. We decided to do a book instead.

Our goal was to have members juried in on the strength of their previous work. The chosen artists would create a new piece to be featured in the book since we ...

Just Because from The Snarky Quilter

Thanks to SAQA’s Material Matters seminar for its members, I’ve had a good time viewing videos and websites that feature innovative materials. I love the idea of wearable art, and the shows are certainly more entertaining than the usual art quilt show.

Somehow the women’s costumes seem to focus on hard to walk in and bondage type outfits, but there’s tons of inventive use of materials in this World of Wearable Art Show highlights video. Of course the outfits are probably best suited to Cirque du Soleil performers.

High couture by Iris van Herpen is modeled ...

Unnatural Fabrics from The Snarky Quilter

I don’t know if that’s the proper term for fabrics that aren’t made from naturally derived materials such as cotton and linen. I don’t like the term man made, with its inherent bias, but fabrics developed from polyester often are called that. Here I’m talking about tyvek, evolon, lutrador, and the like. Why am I talking about them? A recent SAQA seminar on such fabrics reminded me of my own efforts to use such stuff.

Part of the seminar was a video conversation with Shannon Conley, an artist who cheerfully tackles all sorts of three ...

2022 SAQA Benefit Auction Donations from Bits and Stitches

I had another UFO that just wouldn't work for me so I decided to cut it into 4" squares and see if I might be able to create a 12x12" piece to donate to the SAQA Benefit Auction that will take place September 9 through October.  All the pieces are 12x12.  They will be divided into 3 groups with prices starting at $750 or $1,000 and decrease to $100 throughout each week  Studio Art Quilt Associates, SAQA, is an international organization to promote quilting as fine art.

"Impromptu" donation was finished
in time for  the 2022 Auction.

"Variation-2 ...

Making my cicada quilt, Cicadence, step by step from Splendiferous

Cicadence, 2020, 24 x 24 inches

Here’s what I started with:  packet with fat quarter of this fabric, and a sheet inside with the rules.  Rules: must use recognizable amount of challenge fabric, no bigger than 24 x 24, and must have a wing in it somewhere.  The challenge was supposed to be for 2020, but we know how that went.  I had already started it, so I kept going, and hid the finished quilt for almost an entire year.  Since it was made in 2020, I had no idea about Brood X hatching this year, and what a ...

Jenny Anydots from Splendiferous

A quilt shop about an hour and 45 minutes north of me hosts an annual fabric challenge, with gift certificates to the store as prizes.  Here’s the challenge packet.  Must use Kaffe Fassett Tiddlywinks fabric in blue, finish 24" square or smaller, and have a face on it

Started with cat photo, and edited in photoshop to have smaller value range.  Printed out grayscale photo to 24" square size on several sheets of paper, and taped together.

selected fabrics and arranged in value order.  All Kaffe Fassett.

Prism Play: Connections from Goer

I have finished and submitted to my first SAQA (Studio Art Quilt Associates) exhibition. The Northern California/Northern Nevada region issued a call last summer for a juried regional exhibition entitled Prism Play. From the start I loved the vision for this exhibition. The quilts are all required to be 15" wide by 45" long and monochromatic, following one of the color cards from Joen Wolfrom's Ultimate 3-in-1 Color Tool. The selected quilts will hang in multiple full color spectrum groupings during the exhibition.

In phase one we each signed up for a color (or colors) and were assigned ...

Nu har hösten stormat in from Veriquilt

Lite vilsen from Veriquilt

SAQA Benefit Auction äger rum 10 sep - 3 okt. Hoppas ...

På turné from Veriquilt

Något helt annorlunda from Veriquilt

Red Rock Sunrise - SAQA Benefit Auction from From Edge 2 Edge

I had a lot of fun this year creating my 12 x 12 inch SAQA Benefit Auction piece. These little pieces always take more time than I think they will. The main reason is that I still go through a full design and critique process like I would when creating a larger piece.

For this piece I went back into my stash of fabrics that were either digital or inkjet prints. I was happy to realized that the mountain fabric I had purchased was in the same color scheme as my own design I had printed at Spoonflower several years ...

Det kunde ha blivit katastrof from Veriquilt
