Mary Elizabeth Butterfly Quilt from Brown Bird Designs Quilts

I am totally smitten over my newest quilt. Everything about it makes me smile. The fabrics I used in it are all designed by Christopher Thompson aka The Tattooed Quilter. This is his third line created for Riley Blake Designs called Mary Elizabeth. Its fresh spring feel has inspired some spring cleaning in my sewing room as well as this light and playful quilt. As soon as I saw the line at Market, I fell in love with the petals design because of its playfulness. When my package of fabric arrived, it was the main fabric that drew me in ...

Santa Snow Globe Wall Hanging – Christmas Project from Brown Bird Designs Quilts

News flash — We have less than two weeks until Christmas!!! AHHHHHH!! It’s the perfect time to show you what I have been working on. Ever since I made my Peppermint Way Table Runner, as I cut out the English paper piecing parts, I saw the hole of the ring as a snow globe. The peppermint ring had the perfect base for the globe, too. As I was working with the pinks and red fabrics from Jill Howarth and her Way Up North line for Riley Blake Designs, there was one Santa scene that kept speaking the word snow globe ...

Christmas Projects – Santa Doorknob Bells from Brown Bird Designs Quilts

Guess what? It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas… and Christmas decor is popping up everywhere. This weekend, while I was searching for some fun items to use in photos, I was totally sidetracked with a Michaels Christmas sale. A whopping 70% off all Christmas items, plus I had a 20% off my entire purchase. BAM. That’s how I roll! I love coupons. Wholeheartedly, I jumped into their marketing trap and came home with a few Christmas projects. I wanted to show you these shabby chic Doorknob Bells I got at Michaels. They are super cute the ...

Tis the season: Christmas quilts, runners and pillows! from Carried Away Quilting

We woke up to snow this morning! Granted it was just a dusting, and it has already melted. But let me tell you, those fluffy white flurries got me feeling all snuggled up inside. I was ready to pull out the holly and the ivy. It took every bit of restraint I had to leave the Christmas decorations in the storage room.

So instead, I thought I’d share some of my favorite holiday makes from the past couple of years. You can click on each project link for full details and more photos!

Garden Star One Quilt Pattern Re-Release from Brown Bird Designs Quilts

The Fabric

Are you ready for a blast from the past?? I found the sweetest floral line called Lemonade Sundae for this Garden Star One quilt. I love the vintage vibe of the fabric line. I feel like it’s from the thirties. My heart just sings when I look at it! Heart Flower Green is my favorite fabric from the line. There is just something about that green. I love that color so much, I even have green heels in that same color (LOL). The brilliant creator of this line is Leonie Bateman; she designs for Penny Rose Fabrics ...

Festival Quilt Finish from Wedding Dress Blue

This is my major charitable quilt for the year. It is based on donated fabric from Riley Blake and a modified pattern and will go to the annual Festival of Trees in December.

DSC01245

I like the pieced binding and the back.

DSC01248

I don’t have to love a quilt to know that someone will love it.

DSC01246

It will warm the heart and body of a child, surely.

Milk Can Quilt Block & Grocery List from Brown Bird Designs Quilts

Milk Can Quilt Block & Grocery List

Milk Can Quilt Block

In the ’30s, my Opa (Grandpa) delivered milk all around a small city in Holland, Zandvoort aan Zee. Although I never met him, I like to imagine him riding his bike with a cart of jars full of milk. Leaving them on doorsteps for families. When I talked to my mom about this post I learned it was actually a horse and wagon he used for delivery.  My very favorite story about him is the reason why he was put into a work camp for six months during WWII. A few British soldiers’ plane had been ...

Gone Batty Quilt and Pattern Release from Brown Bird Designs Quilts

Welcome to my Birthday Bash Month. I will be sharing fun things with you the whole month of October, like new patterns, giveaways, tutorials and more. Yes. It’s true, I was born on Halloween. Although my mother wished, hoped, and most likely prayed that I wouldn’t be born on that day, I was. She feared that I would be called a witch, or worse, so she proactively dressed me as a pumpkin for the holiday. I grew to love my birthday and all it had to offer. Things like candy, funny songs, school carnivals, and dressing up as ...

Autumn brings a new adventure from Carried Away Quilting

Hello quilting friends!  I’m happy to say that our move is complete!  We've settled into a home on a small lake just a few miles north of the town where my husband now works. We are centrally located to most of our family and friends, which is wonderful. We are so excited to begin this next adventure.

My husband is a fisherman, and our whole family enjoys spending time on the water. It’s my dream that we’ll live here for many years, and one day there will be grandkids playing on our little beach.

Most of ...

Salty Creations- Fabric Weaving & More from Brown Bird Designs Quilts

Fabric Weaving

Before I get to todays scheduled blog post on Salty Creations, I wanted to take a moment to pray for all of those affected by hurricane Florence. I hope everyone stays safe, find shelter, and gets the items they need. My heart goes out to them. It is in times like these I wonder how I can make a difference… When I searched for hurricane Florence I found this on the PBS website. Google is matching donations made to the American Red Cross. That is amazing!!

Meet Dodi Lee Poulsen, Teacher, Pattern Writer, and Fabric Designer from Brown Bird Designs Quilts

Today I have a special treat for you. I am sharing my interview with Dodi Lee Poulsen. Recently I was able to create a project with her newest fabric line called Simply Happy for Riley Blake Designs. When she reached out to me about sharing the project on her website, I had to know more about her. I was fascinated to learn about all she has done in our industry and delighted that she agreed to talk about her journey.  Designing fabric is something that intrigues me and I love learning about how other people built their business. Everyone say ...
