Sew-in Fun! from Heart Desire Creations

Last week I had the good fortune to spend four days in South Carolina with a group of talented and fun quilters! Everyone brought their own projects and worked away all day and into the night. Mostly we had hot sunny days and were able to enjoy the outdoor pool.

These hat pin cushions were made and gifted to each of us by Judy. I absolutely love mine and am so thankful for her thoughtfulness and efforts.

Endless cutting and August Progress from Heart Desire Creations

A blogger I follow, Quilt Diva Julie recently posted about a string quilt she was doing called Optic Strings, using prints and solids. I loved it and immediately knew what fabrics I would use from my stash! The prints I pulled are all the Tula Pink prints I had and matched them with coordinating solid shot cottons. It was a blast to pull and match!

The cutting marathon began. The strips are 1 1/2″ wide by 10 1/2″+ long. There are 37 pairs of fabric and I cut two sets of each fabric with 4 print strips  and ...

Cutting & July Wrap-up from Heart Desire Creations

A small retreat awaits me come Labor Day so I wanted to do some prep.  Most of my Works in Progress are not travel worthy – they are at the point that there’s too much thinking or I’m just not motivated to work on them. Interesting how when I begin my projects I’m SO excited and then, WHAM! Somewhere along the line I lose that enthusiasm. Fortunately, I tend to regain it later, sometimes even years later and manage to complete the project!

I recently purchased a kit on clearance and knew it was perfect for retreat. It ...

Polka Dot Fun from Heart Desire Creations

When I was getting ready for my April Quilt & Sew-In, I prepped an easy and quick quilt using the many polka dot fabrics I have.  I paired them with some striped fabric I had and cut all into 2 1/2 inch strips.  I got the inspiration for this quilt here, which she called the Ernie Quilt. For me, it’s best to have something fairly mindless, quick and gratifying for when I am facilitating a retreat. This worked!

Here is the quilt top on the design wall at the retreat:

And, very unlike me, I quilted it as soon ...

Post Retreat + Enjoying my Passions from Heart Desire Creations

After being home a week, I’ve finally made it to the computer to do a wrap up of my somewhat productive sewing at a quilt retreat I attended in South Carolina.  I began the week full steam ahead by making string blocks for a border that I cut into fours. I then paired each with a white on white square and made half square triangles.  All of my notes were at home (why oh why??) so I just made bunches!  This is the quilt top I was preparing the border blocks for:

These are the border blocks, not yet ...

Prepping and More Prepping from Heart Desire Creations

Off to another retreat! I’m a  guest at this one, so I get to do a lot more sewing. Prepping has been going on for about a week and I am SO ready! There’s something wonderful about being in a room full of creative quilters that serves to feed my creativity and productivity.

First – a scrappy flimsy that needs a border. It’s a strip quilt and I’ll be doing more strip blocks, making them into small half square triangles with a white-on-white, and adding as a border.

Second – a baby scrappy quilt that was started a ...

A Touch of Elegance from Heart Desire Creations

Retreat info

Several years ago I made a pretty set of pillowcases for our bed and hubby loved them. How disappointing when one met its demise. He asked for another set! What a nice break to do some easy and quick sewing. I did them on my Jazz because it sews really fast – 1,000 stitches a minute!  The first set I did is rather bold  and fancy and goes with our burgundy set of sheets.

Next I chose a print to go with our turquoise set. It seemed a bit plain until they were all together and on the bed – a ...

Farmhouse Retreat 2019 from Blossom Heart Quilts

Last month, I had the honour of co-hosting a retreat with Caitlin Polden. We first connected through making our Pollinate quilts, and the friendship blossomed from there as we bonded over Lauren Daigle, Christy Nockels, and Handmade Getaway – a beautiful book by Jacqueline Sava Clarke and Karyn Valino – and which was the spark for our idea of hosting a quilting retreat together and seeing what happened.

View from the Farmhouse Retreat

Caitlin lives on a farm in Booleroo, SA, and her beautiful farmhouse had recently been renovated. The extension was the perfect place to set up for sewing with space for sewing tables, and a ...

Back from A Retreat from Heart Desire Creations

Talk about fun!  There might have been more laughter than sewing! Thankfully, there was a lot of sewing on my part.  As usual, I brought more projects than I could possibly have worked on. Just in case I have a problem with a project, or if I should get bored with a project, or if I miraculously finish a project, I’ll have another to keep me busy. This was a “Featherweight Lovers” retreat, so we all brought our Featherweight machines. Although not a FW, Dee Dee’s Singer was an absolute beauty and I love her elegant setting with ...

Lots of Cutting & Retreat Prep from Heart Desire Creations

Sewing retreats – so very much gets done! To prepare for a 4 day retreat I’m going to, I cut out not one, but two new projects! The first is for a gift for a little boy. I’ve never done an “I Spy” quilt before and thought it would be the perfect gift for the little guy.  Unfortunately, my stash is not very supportive of this quilt. I did manage to cut 9-five inch blocks and then the request process to friends and my guild for more. I’m going to do “square in a square” blocks, using various ...

Days Away Sewing from Heart Desire Creations

A few of us were supposed to head to the beach for a week of sewing at a big retreat. Unfortunately, Hurricane Florence did much damage to the host hotel and it was cancelled. I quickly found someplace closer for us to go for a few days of sewing – sometimes you just need to get away!

I didn’t do a crazy amount of sewing, but did enjoy the sewing I did. I did a fair amount of hand quilting too.  This Kaffe scrappy quilt top will get several more rows and then borders.

More Great Creations from Heart Desire Creations

Fall 2018 retreat was a new challenge for me – instead of 20 attendees, there were 30! So glad too – every one was so talented. I already shared the show and tell. However, a few were left out! Someone had graciously taken pics for me and I completely missed one of the emails with attached pics. Quilters – please forgive.  I love your quilts.

Here’s a great “self portrait” by a very classy lady.  It is just so fun and creative!

Back from Retreat I from Heart Desire Creations

Whew! Retreat is just so much fun – but really, 30 quilters?! There was a lot of sewing, sharing, laughing, games, prizes and fun, fun, fun.  What a wonderful group. And I had the privilege of meeting some for the first time and there were a few that hadn’t been in a while. There are those that come every year. All lend so much to the retreat. In addition to North Carolina, they came from South Carolina, Virginia, Alabama and Florida!

Here are some of the pics – another took some and am awaiting those to be sent so there will ...

The Fabric Made Me Do It – Again! from Heart Desire Creations

Keep Calm Squirrel[1]Remember my rant about reducing my WIPs? Huh – guess I lied! How weak am I when I begin to look through my fabrics. Maybe I can justify this one, though – it’s a leader ender to have on hand at upcoming retreats.  That’s my story and I’m sticking to it! This also puts me as a member in good standing in the Squirrel Club!

I was going through my scrap bin of Kaffe fabrics which was filled to the brim with beautiful, colorful prints. I saw a quilt online recently that’s done with all half square triangles ...
