Sewing Machines – How to Choose? from QUilting By-You

I will come right out and say that Char and I have Viking machines. It’s not the only machine that we have sewn on, but it is the brand of sewing machine that we currently use for our every day sewing needs.

This will not be a run down on every machine brand out there, because I’m sure there are some brands that I am not familiar with, and I’m not sure that would really be helpful. My favorite brand may not be what is best for you!

So, how do you choose? There are lots of ...

Thoughts on Learning to Quilt from QUilting By-You

I’m sure I have done this before, but its always good to revisit things. We are a business where we teach long arm quilting and rent our machines so that you can finish your project yourself. We do all the maintenance so you don’t have to. We have a variety of thread to choose from and try to offer further classes so that you can grow on your long arm quilting journey.

Before all of that happens, we have a beginning class we require you to take. In this class we talk about getting your quilt ready for ...

Charity Continues at Home from QUilting By-You

It seems like during this time fundraising for our favorite charities is down and small businesses are struggling to stay open.

Yet, at the same time I find some hope in watching fellow quilters still creating for their favorite places. Animal Shelters, Linus, local schools, and food pantries just to name a few.

Perhaps you were a mask maker helping out your local hospital, senior living, or homeless population.

Maybe you went through your stash to make a donation to your local church for their Covid efforts.

I have even seen quilts being created to raffle off for local charities ...

How to Talk to Your Long Arm Quilter from QUilting By-You

Some of us prefer to quilt by check. No judgement here, because any way you get a quilt finished is valid!

Maybe you have a long arm quilter that you have been working with for years. Maybe you moved and need to find someone local. Maybe a friend found a new place and is encouraging you to try them out. Or maybe you are new to quilting and need to find someone.

How do I talk to my Long Arm Quilter to get what I want?

One of the very first things that you should do is make sure your ...

Tying a Quilt vs. Machine Quilting vs. Hand Quilting from QUilting By-You

This one is a little tricky. Spoiler alert, and I’m sure that you won’t be surprised, all are valid.

I feel like the first method has some negative connotations and this makes it tricky. Tying quilts seems to carry a bit of a stigma for not being a real way to finish a quilt. However, I know there are groups out there that have tied quilts for charity. We have been a part of groups that use that method. In a group, tying a quilt can go very quickly with everyone taking a turn. If your quilts are ...

Long Arm Quilting vs. Domestic Sewing Machine Quilting from QUilting By-You

Before you get too far, I’m going to give you a spoiler. They are both winners.

Then why bring it up? Well, because it is a good idea to talk about all aspects of our craft. Sometimes there is a stigma attached to certain methods and we should break those stigmas down. Some folks don’t have access to a long arm machine. Others prefer to say they did the whole thing. Just like there are multiple ways to make a half square triangle, there are multiple ways to finish a quilt.

Today we are going to talk about ...

I know, it’s been a while…. from QUilting By-You

Happy quilting! It has been a while since we showed some love to our blog… Once again we are going to reboot and give it another go!

It has also been a rough ride this year so far. Just when we think that we are getting ahead, some random event comes along that makes us question all of our life choices.

We are still here at the shop and we have made some changes in light of the current situation. We are only taking one renter at a time and trying to schedule appointments where there is no overlap. We ...
