Sushi Pillows from Samelia's Mum

My 13yo son is what I imagine the majority of sons are like when it comes to their mothers sewing, fabric, craft addiction.

Tolerance and zero interest.

Beginner's Journey: First Quilted Pillow from Art Gallery Fabrics-The Creative Blog

Hello Makers,

Glad to report that I am back on the sewing machine! This time, I decided to tackle a simpler project, an actual beginner-friendly project and with some help from the trusty sewing wizard, Meli. I really wanted to make a pillow this time with an easier block from the #AGFquiltblockcollection, and I landed on the Linking Block tutorial, which was perfect for someone like me that just started sewing. Learning from my first block that I did, I choose fabric prints that were harder to “mess up” on, so I didn’t have to worry about the way ...

2018 Island Batik Ambassador  ReviewI am (almost) speechless. ... from Living Water Quilter

2018 Island Batik Ambassador  Review

I am (almost) speechless.  My first year as an Island Batik Ambassador has been, no kidding, life changing.  Island Batik gave each ambassadors two large boxes filled with fabrics and goodies from industry partners.

image

The combined generous supply of Island Batik fabrics and products from industry partners, Aurifil and Hobbs Batting, gave me the resources  to try new quilting challenges and make quilts, totes, pillow, postcards and more.

Let’s review the Island Batik Ambassador year in pictures. It includes monthly challenges, some just because projects and pattern releases.

More Custom Cushions (Catch Up) from Samelia's Mum

Custom Cushions for Kenzie, Bethany, Indianna and Addisen

It seems as though it was only just Christmas... I blinked and we're suddenly half way through January. Time certainly does fly by during the school summer holidays.

I have some exciting things planned for the blog in the next few weeks, but I thought I'd pop in here quickly today to share a few pictures of some custom cushions I made as commissions before Christmas. They would have all gone to their new little owners and really hope they love them as much as I loved making them.

This ...

Some new PJ Name Pillows from Samelia's Mum

I have some new quilted PJ Name Pillows to share today; one for Alfie and one for Owen. This is my go-to project for kids gifts. A cute pillow for their bed, with a very deep envelope style back so that they can fold and store their PJ's during the day.

Well, fold and store would be in a ideal world.... does any kid every really fold or store anything?

Alfie is a baby and isn't able to tell me what colours he likes or what he's interested in just yet... so for now, his pillow in ...

Roses on the Vine - Quilted Pillow from Samelia's Mum

Something came over me and I decided to clean up my sewing room yesterday. My sewing room seems to be the place where things get dumped (or hidden). It became a very un-inspiring space and I don't know about you, but me personally, if my sewing room is messy and unorganised, I can't sew. I just don't feel inspired to be in there to create anything.

Pillow finish from Northern Deb Quilts

My latest finish is another collage project...it's a Laura Heine flower. I decided to make it small instead of wall size. And then i added assorted HSTs on one side. It ended up being a fun summer pillow for my entry seat. I just may make another....

Rainbows, Unicorns and a Granddaughter's Birthday from Random Thoughts... do or "di"

We have ten grandchildren and with each birthday, Christmas and big life event it gets harder and harder to come up with gift ideas. For Olivia's 7th birthday last week I made her a huge Lisa the Unicorn pillow. Thanks to my friend, MaryAnn, for bringing this pattern to my attention, because the minute I saw it I knew Olivia would love it.
I made the mane using a rainbow of strips from my stash. The horn is made using several different blue fabrics.

To accentuate the mane I quilted it with a series of swirling lines using a ...

Couching and Ruler quiltingHave you tried yarn couching? It is a... from Living Water Quilter

Couching and Ruler quilting

Have you tried yarn couching? It is a technique I tried over a year ago. It was an experiment that left me wanting to do more. This time I used the JUKI couching foot on the QVP TL2200S, a sit-down longarm quilting machine.

image

First, the squiggle ruler was used to mark the curves. The JUKI couching foot has two attachments. One has a large hole for thick yarn and one has a smaller hole for thinner yarn. I used the larger hole to couch the yarn along the marked curves.

Then, using the squiggle acrylic ruler ...

Home State Love and NTT from My Quilt Infatuation

Happy Needle and Thread Thursday!  This week has been all about scrap play for me.  I've finished a scrappy quilt that I have to keep secret for now, but while my scraps were out, I also sewed a few of my precious AMH bits to make this pillow.

This pillow is for my mom for Christmas (she already knows, so I'm not blowing a huge surprise here).  I already have a collection of embroidered state pillows, one for each of the four states that my hubby and I have lived during our marriage, but believe me, if I ...

Custom Applique Pillows from Samelia's Mum

I got a little bit of sewing time this week and made two pillows this week for two kids celebrating birthdays. Both have envelope enclosures at the back which is perfect for storing pyjamas.

Phoebe is one of my daughter's little friends (though in saying this, she's almost as tall as I am!). She's not really a "girlie girl" so my go-to little pink florals were out of the question. Her favourite colour is turquoise, so I raided my stash and came up with these prints for her pillow. They're bold and graphic and I really ...

Mini Quilts and a Quilted Pillow from Sew Fresh Quilts

My Pet Hamster mini quilt 24" x 26"

I have been feeling a little stressed lately. But sewing helps!

Even just ironing fabric helps.

My thoughts are all over the place.
I'm all over the place.

And this post is really all over the place.

These two mini quilts have been on my mental bucket list for quite a while now. So after finishing the Panda Please quilt I shared on Friday, I cut into those new fabrics I recently purchased and made up the Raccoon mini quilt shown below.

And the next day I made the My Pet ...

When life gives you scraps… from Veni Vidi Vicky

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
…you have to improvise a little.

My last baby quilt left me with a bunch of HST clippings in aqua and teal hues. The scraps were barely 1.5” square,  would I have trimmed them up before sewing with them I might have ended with a grid as small as 0.5”. Nope, that wasn’t a day for tiny piecing and I don’t need much convincing to skip trimming in general. I was going to wing it that day and just piece those HSTs in the shapes they came in – no discrimination, just improvising.
