Marvellous Minis with Island Batik from Clever Chameleon

Year of the Pig appliqué by Dione Gardner-Stephen at Clever Chameleon

Happy New Year of the Pig 2019

February is Mini Quilt Month in the Island Batik Ambassador calendar: “Create a mini quilt 24″ x 24″ or smaller, any technique” is the challenge we’ve been given. Minis are a great way to try a new technique, or explore resource/time intensive projects on a doable scale. Or to commemorate an occasion or holiday. Like the Lunar New Year. For my first 2019 Ambassador challenge I decided to make something to mark Chinese New Year. Happy New Year of the Pig!

In this post you will find my first lap-size quilt top constructed pre-appliqué and a pdf download of the instructions so you can start yours too. Of course, it is not necessary to pre-assemble your quilt top before you applique the blocks. You can definitely choose to ...

Paper-Pieced Dragonfly Appliqué Pillow from Clever Chameleon

Dragonfly appliqué pillow by Dione of Clever Chameleon

I have finished my October paper-piecing adventures for Island Batik, played with my dragonfly appliqué design, and tested out some Y-seam sewing…..

This project sure covered a lot of bases, and my daughter has scored herself a new decorative pillow to match her newest quilt. Would you like to see how I put it together?

And let me know what you think of the organza for the dragonfly appliqué wings!

So, you know I have a new toy, right?…. the ScanNCut CM900 I purchased a few weeks ago. Of course you know…. the blasted thing keeps popping up in my blog. Well, I waaaaas going to stop going on about it after the snow globe project. But…..

I was in the shower the other morning, musing over the technicalities of my current quilt, as I so often do, and a light bulb went on.  Not ...

Great Outdoors Quilt Progress and Snow Globe Coaster Winners from Clever Chameleon

Flower Garden quilt by Clever Chameleon

I hope you’ve had a great week and made some progress on something fun

I’ve been working on my latest Island Batik Great Outdoors blog hop quilt and here’s a little look at where I’m up to. This quilt is going to be a large single (twin) bed size and is already claimed, pre-finish, by my daughter.

I think I’m going to need some help naming this quilt…. The concept’s changed a little since I started and it’s left me floundering for a good name…… I’m hoping maybe you’ll be able ...

“Illusions of Christmas” – A New Mini Quilt from Clever Chameleon

It’s the last day of the Spring 2018 Art with Fabric blog hop, and my turn to show you my quilt interpretation of the hop theme “1+1=3”.

What does “1+1=3” mean to you and how would you quilt it? My first thoughts were to produce a set of quirky critters that captured the essence of a young family. But May has been seriously crazy and I had neither the time nor energy in the end to whip up such a pattern from scratch.

The other connotation I was strongly drawn to was the mathematical impossibility ...

Shadows of Auntie Green Finished!! from Clever Chameleon

My sincerest thanks to all the amazing people who gave me their two cents worth on how to finish “Shadows of Auntie Green”!

Shadows of Auntie Green

It is done! Shadows of Auntie Green – my April Island Batik Ambassador quilt is finished. A few days late, as forecast, but I hope you’ll agree, they were days well spent.

There were two parts to the finish of this quilt that I asked you to help me with. The quilting and binding decisions.

I had wondered whether the background of this quilt should be more heavily quilted to emphasise the appliqué. My gut feeling was ...

My Best Turned-Edge Appliqué Tips – The Promised Tutorial from Clever Chameleon

A month ago, I was in the “Never! You couldn’t pay me!” camp regarding turned-edge appliqué. Too slow, too fiddly and too unsuccessful. Life is too short!

Create appliqué

But things have changed……

To be honest, you aren’t going to suddenly see stacks of turned-edge appliqué projects suddenly appearing on this blog. The reality is that turned-edge appliqué is still too slow for my everyday use and doesn’t fit a lot of the designs I like to make.

BUT, and it is a big but, I now know a method of turned-edge appliqué that I do find enjoyable and ...

Invisible Machine Applique Experiment Part 2 from Clever Chameleon

Clever Cat appliqué

Well, it’s literally taken all month, but I finally have a Machine-Stitched, Turned-Edge Appliqué method that I Like!

This month, the goal for each Island Batik Ambassador was to try a technique we hadn’t done before. I really liked this challenge…. my biggest problem was choosing  just one thing, because I have a huge (and still growing) list of things I think I’d like to have a go at. And this month hasn’t actually helped that much….. reading through all the other ambassador projects this month has really only added to my quilting bucket list! I ...

How to make a sewing machine dust cover from Clever Chameleon

Sweet Sixteen dust cover

Island Batik’s “Try a New Technique” month has given me the push I needed to finally make my machine a dust cover!

As an Island Batik Ambassador, my challenge for March was to chose some of the beautiful fabrics they sent to me in February and create something using a technique I hadn’t tried before. So, I decided to give “invisible machine appliqué” a whirl. But in order to try out such an appliqué technique, I needed something to appliqué onto. So I made a dust cover for my Sweet Sixteen sit-down longarm machine. You can read more ...

The current Island Batik Ambassadors are each trying a new technique of their own choosing this month. So for my project, I have decided to have a go at “invisible machine appliqué”. No, not appliqué done on invisible machines, silly! </p>

My One Monthly Goal: Quilt Labels from Clever Chameleon

quilt pile needing quilt labels

Do you label your Quilts? And How!?

How dedicated are you to labelling your quilts? All of your quilts?!

Umm, in all honesty, unless there is an immediate need to do so, I often walk away at this step with a vague intention of “doing it later”. Unless the quilt is facing a show entry deadline, or is to be sold, or something similarly dire. Because there are soooooo many more fun tasks that need doing in my sewing room than adding quilt labels. Yet, I am the first to admit this is silly. I actually think it is rather ...

Valentine’s Hearts Destash Project – Quick Update from Clever Chameleon

Valentine's Heart Quilt

The Evolution of a Destash Quilt

I have been wondering what to do with the scrap improv heart blocks I made last month. I want to make a smallish quilt, but one still large enough to be useful. Perhaps something for a romantic picnic or a snuggle on the couch with a movie. But nothing I planned seemed to suit the improv hearts I have already made and fallen in love with. The whole planning thing kept resulting in designs I felt were too formal, something which these pretty hearts definitely are not!

Then, the other day I had my ...

Celebrating Local Quilt Shops and Life’s Little Pleasures from Clever Chameleon

Are you sewing along on the no pressure, no deadline Regatta quilt-along at Home Sewn by Us? I am happy to say that I now have a quilt top towards this project, and have mostly enjoyed the laid-back challenge of adapting the jelly roll I had to the Regatta Quilt Pattern. I must emphasise the "mostly", because just after my last post about this quilt, this project had a rough couple of days. It seemed every time I picked it up, I managed to sew something into the wrong place! It. should. have. been. so. simple. And yet I muffed ...
